Weekend Nuggets: Mullins Center

10.23.10 - Amherst (Ryan Gilbertie)

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

These weekend’s shows from Amherst were split down the middle. Phish brought a legitimate smoker on Saturday night and a  bona fide snoozefest on Sunday. Coming off three special shows in Augusta, Utica, and Providence, however, these shows just didn’t elevate in the same way. The first night has plenty of engaging jamming in “Tweezer,” Disease > My Friend > Caspian > Halfway to the Moon > Boogie On,” and  set-ending sequence – “Piper > Hood, YEM.” But aside from the first-set “Stash,” Sunday never really got off the ground. The  old-school first set would have been fine had there been any action in the second. But there wasn’t. When a second set’s highlight is “Roggae > Taste” you know something strange is afoot at the Circle K. Another smoking “Bowie” could do nothing to salvage this long-lost second half. But the band popped right back in Manchester like nothing had happened.

You have got to be kidding me with the clapping and woh ohohoh oh singalong during Stash at Princeton. Man that would sound sweet if you could just hear Trey and the orchestra.

oh @ garretc – just realized you said 9/22/99. i was thinking of 9/29/99. either way, bane/blasting a 2001 is inevitable hah.

but yea, getting to hang with phellow heads is such a treat. i was luckily able to convert a good friend at home and i have 1 good friend at nyu who’s into phish. other than that its prety random, plus the occasional sesh with Mitch or the even rarer run-in with Gus from the BB, who was visiting this weekend (happens to be my roomates little brother – roomate isnt as much into phish but enjoys the jams when we’re really high hah)

  3. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

i’ll hafta check out the 9/22 though. Jtran seconds the motion and he’ll be here for nye run as well. gonna be a fun time

  4. Robear Says:

fee4zy, you still on? r u in Salt Lake?

  5. joe Says:

is the new show just advertised on nbc during the football game about our favorite phish fan to pick on? IT’S CALLED ‘THE CAPE’

  6. garretc Says:

I guess I’ll need to get ahold of 9/29 then too!

There’s no reason we can only listen to one 2001…

  7. ChefBradford Says:

garret, the Pyramid 2001 is a masterpiece (the 9/29)

  8. tba Says:

Phish is not the dead, tough enough with Jer missing, but no Trey, and Phish cover would be impossible in the likes of filling the centrum. I don’t know; I think Trey’s imagination and his playing would make it impossible to cover on a big stage. Half of the freaks growing up wanted to be Garcia, hell even the mel seals band is good. Who knows, but obviously lets pray Trey isn’t going anywhere. Furthur is one thing, as the vocals are more assessable, but just one man’s opinion or trash, see soemone can copy Trey :<)

That said kudos to furthur, not my cup of tea, as i can tell the difference, and big arenas w/out a band's star, sorry no for me. But JK can rip, and he's nice. I would go house of blues 85%, anything bigger…nope.

  9. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

“hanging out with people that like Phish.

I always forget that that’s something that can happen!”

    haha yes!

  10. ChefBradford Says:

@dancing, I thought the same thing

small town like this, even though it’s a college town, it’s hard to find like-minded people. I occasionally meet someone who’s a bit receptive, but a very few who’d be willing to travel a fair distance to see the band

    their loss, yeah?

    yeah

  11. ChefBradford Says:

actually, aside from two past girlfriends, the only people I’ve met in 11 years here who’d travel a ways to see Phish were a few folks who’d done it long before I met them

  12. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    yep, totally chef

  13. halcyon Says:

    Dammit Eli!

Anyone catch brewmasters? Pretty good show. I really want to try the Bitches Brew. I have been searching for it for months now, and can’t find it in the 40 mile radius of liquor stores from where I live. Will have to hit Applejacks or one of the other large liquor stores in Denver next time down there.

  14. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

@garretc – a (great) soundboard of that 2001 leaked in the form of bunny archives from bonaroo 2009. if you can find it, awesome, if not i’ll just email the track to you because its a must-hear. its 22 minutes, but it never gets boring

Aight, so I pulled KPs whole show remaster earlier, but hell, I’ll give the 2001 SBD a spin right now pre-bed…
