Weekend Nuggets: Mullins Center

10.23.10 - Amherst (Ryan Gilbertie)

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

These weekend’s shows from Amherst were split down the middle. Phish brought a legitimate smoker on Saturday night and a  bona fide snoozefest on Sunday. Coming off three special shows in Augusta, Utica, and Providence, however, these shows just didn’t elevate in the same way. The first night has plenty of engaging jamming in “Tweezer,” Disease > My Friend > Caspian > Halfway to the Moon > Boogie On,” and  set-ending sequence – “Piper > Hood, YEM.” But aside from the first-set “Stash,” Sunday never really got off the ground. The  old-school first set would have been fine had there been any action in the second. But there wasn’t. When a second set’s highlight is “Roggae > Taste” you know something strange is afoot at the Circle K. Another smoking “Bowie” could do nothing to salvage this long-lost second half. But the band popped right back in Manchester like nothing had happened.

  2. angryjoggerz Says:

Big Rick Pow Wow is up at search and destroy for those of you who are in on that. Gonna be a fun Saturday. Got lots of new GD to get into on the phones, cannot wait!

  3. angryjoggerz Says:

El Dude, not sure what you mean? Yes I am from Chicago.

  4. EL Duderino Says:

Downloaded that new Road Trips yesterday…

    It’s nice!

    Love me some ’69… 😉

  5. joemeg Says:

@GD sorry had to step away to tend to the kids. I guess I’d be considered the “old guard” too. I definitely got the old part covered. But most the people I go to shows with would probably be considered “old guard” as well, and I don’t know anyone who didn’t love Manchester. I mean that was an old school show. Everyone I saw coming out of Manchester had a big old grin on their face. Oh well, it didn’t make me angry, just made me scratch my head and wonder.

  6. EL Duderino Says:

You’ve never been to a game?

  7. sumodie Says:

I’ve forced myself to erase 2010 phish from the pod in favor of older phish & GD…after all, why else torrent every phish show from etree?

ok, so a few choice fall tour nuggets remain on the pod 8)

(waiting for Robert Plant tix to go onsale this morn, Boston show in January, no worries of phish conflict, lol)

  8. angryjoggerz Says:

Nope. Never been to a football game. Just not my thing. Been to Soldiers Field plenty, but that was a totally different thing all together 😉

  9. EL Duderino Says:

    @ AJ

Yeah, the way you were talking it sounded like you’re not from there, my bad…

    C. Bears games are fun to go to.

  10. EL Duderino Says:

    My list of local shows:

    Robert Plant w/NMA
    Little Feat
    Leo Kottke

Sam Bush is in town tonight

  11. angryjoggerz Says:

Cool, I know people who love the football love it, so that is awesome. Im always happy to see people get together and have a good time. The Wrigley thing just threw me today.

  12. EL Duderino Says:

    Anyone in Raleigh, NC.

Jimmy Herring Band @ the Lincoln Theater tonight

  13. angryjoggerz Says:

What do you all think? New iPad for the holidays or will they hold out until the 1 year mark? I am wanting one but do not want to get stuck with the overpriced underjuiced one.

  14. sumodie Says:

I’d wait on the ipad -I’m not an early adopter of technology. Let ’em improve it

  15. EL Duderino Says:

    I’d wait…

Just like the 4g phones… I’m waiting for the next round.

My girl wants a Kendall, I told her get the i-Pad

  16. Jtran Says:

    Went Gin
    5/16/95 Reba
    Oswego Piper

to go with the morning coffee today.

  17. Jtran Says:

    Newly acquired soundboards no less

  18. KWL Says:

    what up kidz

got a free ticket to syracuse miner league hockey game last night, was pretty strange to be back in the war memorial – plenty of memories from that night and it was hard to pay attention to the hockey when i first got in the building

needless to say the ‘security’ staff is still comprised of little old ladies

  19. KWL Says:

beautiful sunny day today, gonna get a little work done now and then enjoy the afternoon all irie with the slf. real excited to revisit thursday’s mmw show, which started with 40 mins of improv. those guys are on fire.

  20. EL Duderino Says:

    Erin Andrews = Yummerz

Looks like a beautiful day in Chicago…

  21. sumodie Says:

@kwl: those ladies were so sweet at last year’s phish show, though maybe they were in shock, lol

see any similarities b/t the War Memorial and Boardwalk Hall? The Hall is way nicer & bigger, though, whereas the War Memorial relies heavily on steel beam construction

sounds like your mmw show went further out than mine, which was still great. I’ve already grabbed the syracuse show and am waiting for the Noho show to pop up at etree

  22. sumodie Says:

scored my Plant tix and learned something new….remember how TM likes to send folks a ‘free’ subscription to Rolling Stone?

I forgot to opt out this time but went back and discovered there’s a link with the subscription details. On that new page I discovered one can get the $12.95 refunded by printing out the tix confirmation page along with a rebate form and mailing it in.

So could one get the same rebate back for every TM order? Guess I’ll find out down the road

  23. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I know a lot of you are on the Apple teat, but there is a big wave of other tablets coming out. some in time for this holiday season, some soon thereafter. ipad was the bellwether kind of like the iphone but many of these will be much more powerful than the ipad. if you like apple, there’s no reason to not get it but you will be seeing more powerful, more cost effective tablets very soon…

  24. KWL Says:

sumo, yes, i commented last night on how it was similar to boardwalk – big arched ceiling with a flat wall at one end… just a much smaller version

  25. nonoyolker Says:

Ditto @ el dude on the new road trips. Started spinning last night, some great material. That Dark Star hit the spot. Big Cypress, ’69. Cool to think its the same location as 30 yrs later…

Also got Garcia, Ragged but Right. Solid release. Perfect listening for Saturday morning.

    Have a good weekend all!
