Weekend Nuggets: Mullins Center

10.23.10 - Amherst (Ryan Gilbertie)

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

These weekend’s shows from Amherst were split down the middle. Phish brought a legitimate smoker on Saturday night and a  bona fide snoozefest on Sunday. Coming off three special shows in Augusta, Utica, and Providence, however, these shows just didn’t elevate in the same way. The first night has plenty of engaging jamming in “Tweezer,” Disease > My Friend > Caspian > Halfway to the Moon > Boogie On,” and  set-ending sequence – “Piper > Hood, YEM.” But aside from the first-set “Stash,” Sunday never really got off the ground. The  old-school first set would have been fine had there been any action in the second. But there wasn’t. When a second set’s highlight is “Roggae > Taste” you know something strange is afoot at the Circle K. Another smoking “Bowie” could do nothing to salvage this long-lost second half. But the band popped right back in Manchester like nothing had happened.

    @Lyc – Utica sand

  2. Lycanthropist Says:

    nice @fb

    done

  3. sumodie Says:

@mrp: your CH assessment is spot on!

also look for the Dude in the Tron remake, also coming in december w/ true grit

  4. Lycanthropist Says:

so my first piano lesson (first time teaching that is) went pretty well.

Pretty eye opening on how slow the process is gonna be though lol

  5. fatbunch Says:

@lyc – some tasty Page fills in there! phish is a four-headed octopus

  6. fatbunch Says:

Nice @Lyc. My wife is a cellist and teacher but she’s had a number of beginning piano students as well.

  7. fatbunch Says:

^ she says “very slow” and to just be nice and remember you’re getting paid (hopefully). 🙂

  8. Lycanthropist Says:

What I love about this Sand, and Mr. C and I have talked about this, is that Trey’s phrasing is so lengthy.

What I mean is he is thinkin so far ahead that he has these long passages of delivery that are just executed brilliantly.

Rather than just short fiery bursts he has crafting entire melodies that just make the jam rise and fall like an ocean of funk.

  9. Lycanthropist Says:

    ha!

    thanks Mrs FB.

    Yes getting paid.

And I am also trying to remember what it was like when I first started.

    Although I never took lessons…

  10. fatbunch Says:

^ great description of what’s going on in that sand. Yes, big bulbous momentum there!

  11. Robear Says:

lots of my favorite open jams are coming in 3.0. Still have a Trey lick stuck in my craw though. fun looking, but just can’t place it.

MSG ‘Light’ sounds great, but does not solve the mystery.

  12. fatbunch Says:

Goin out for breakfast then back for major work-in-the-house type day while Mrs. FB works on her doctorate. Was thinking of all the BB good listeners 2 weeks ago when hearing the Spokane Symphony perform Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings – reminded me of a real phish listening experience. Anybody heard that piece? May try to find a version to link up so you all can take it in. Incredible music!!!

  13. kayatosh Says:

turning my attention to some MMW recordings today. gonna start w/ 11.16.2010. any thoughts about the sound quality of what’s up on bt.etree.org?

  14. Robear Says:

okay, mystery solved. it is from the MSG ‘Light’. about the last 3 minutes. Not so much a Trey lick, but more like a light sabre battle between Trey and Mike, narrated by Fishman and Page.

  15. Mr.Miner Says:

that three note pattern/theme robear? Came up in prov carini and prov light as well..

  16. Robear Says:

yeah miner, the slowed three note pattern. ba da da, ba da da, ba da da

i cannot get enough of the prov. jam>carini and light. i want to live in those jams.

  17. Mitch Says:

i remember parts of msg light at greek or telly i think. maybe jones beach.

ok so having nothing of value to add since i cant remember where i’m talking about… whos going to furthur tonight?

  18. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

end of msg light makes me happy

  19. JP Says:

only fall shows were prov > amherst > manchester

totally think you hit it spot on in terms of the amherst breakdown Miner

10.23 had tons of highlights (as you point out) and 10.24 did not really elevate much – and you nailed the high points and the fact that there really weren’t that many

funny thing about 10.24 though – the old friend who lives just out of town who put me up and who missed 10.23 says – just before showtime:

“it would be cool if they played something like … quinn the eskimo”

this guy totally does not follow the band or setlists, but has seen phish sporadically since 1988 – so obv he had no idea that quinn had entered the mid-length tour rotation level

10.24 felt really special to him – he also loved the ride captain

for me tho, you nailed it Miner: stash and roggae > taste were the only standouts

sorry, coffee and bud = 2 wordy

loved the poster post from yesterday – going to pick up the just framed manchester poster this am and decide what room gets to be blessed

  20. verno329 Says:

@kaya Most of the MMW on by.etree is excellent quality. There’s a pretty dedicated group of fans on there that do a great job. A wealth of great music available there

  21. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

omg i cant wait for the next msg light

  22. KWL Says:

if they don’t play it, df, will you want your money back?

    😮

  23. JP Says:

2 upcoming lights (the only repeat of the 5 shows) – one in woostah 2, 1 on 1/1/11 > onward with 3.1!

  24. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

not if they play it in worcester

  25. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I can’t decide if michigan is just really bad or if wisconsin is that good. this is ugly.
