Phish Power (Pollock)

The second of Summer ’97 brought six debuts after the tour opener featured seven new originals. These shows in Dublin started a long road of Summer ’97 that ended in Limestone, Maine at The Great Went. Over the course of months, Phish would transform a completely different band and a powerhouse of groove. This one goes out to Daniel via reader request.

I: Down with Disease, NICU, Dirt*, Talk, My Soul, Cars Trucks Buses, Limb By Limb, Bye Bye Foot*, Free, Prince Caspian

II: Twist*, Piper*, Saw It Again*, Waking Up*, Dogs Stole Things, Waste, David Bowie, Cavern

E: When the Circus Comes, Rocky Top

* debut

  2. Gavinsdad Says:

Purps! I met you on your bday, or very close to it, at the MSG meetup last year. Congrats man. Have a great one and as you know Mitch is fine ppl to celebrate with.

Some really great discussion this morning, having me seriously missing the morning crew…
    I love this place.

Anyone hear about the New Year’s run coming up with that band The Fish?
I was thinking about checking em out.

quick worcester jim story (and then some actual work before I go home): I couldn’t go to that show, so I gave my buddy who I was living with at the time the tickets. he took his english girlfriend, neither of whom were phish fans but did like music (and smoking weed, etc.)…anyway, they kind of liked the show. which I thought was strange since I’d seen them already on that tour and thought it was on-fire phish. This is before I knew about looking up setlists, etc. so I never knew what happened really. He’s since been to a few 3.0 shows with me (but none between that night and now) and likes it so much better than he did before. I also think I may have given them a handful of powerful mushrooms that night too and think they might have freaked out a bit.

  5. joe Says:

I pieced it together much later when I heard about the worcester jim and knew that was the one I missed. I was always very much outside of this type of enviornment where we dissect things as they happen now.

Anyone wanting to spin a Mike show I highly recommend the 11-26-10 Portland ME show with Fishman who sat in for most of the show

I skipped Mike this time around but have really enjoyed most of the first set on the pod (still haven’t finished 2nd set)

Excellent / interesting versions of I’m Deranged, Andelman’s Yard, Traveled too Far>Sound, Makisupa, and especially Littte Feat’s Easy to Slip (no, this tune is not from WFC) as well as Cities. Perhaps it’s Fishman’s influence, who knows…

Between the two shows I caught last year and some of the (warranted) chat here, I was reluctant to see/spin a show, but I’m a little bummed I missed this one

Someone on the greenboard has been upping mp3s of the whole tour, but the Portland ME show has yet to appear:

^ mushrooms? that reminds me, I bought the coolest mushroom book for only $9 in Brunswick ME while driving home from thanksgiving

Arik Roper’s Mushroom Magick book has the most exquisite paintings of mushrooms I’ve ever seen -such a weird little post-Turkey find, it was an instant keeper as soon as I saw it

To top it off, the bookstore owner and I started chatting and it turns out we both know A.G. from Telluride CO who organizes that town’s annual mushroom festival every year

(and to drag phish into the story, I met A.G. and his friend Dave at Burning Man ’06, the same Dave I’ve been going to see Phish with in 3.0)

    Six degrees of Phish, lol

11/29/98 Simple is also cash money.

  10. ChefBradford Says:

Robear, ever get any takers on those posters this morning? If not send me an e-mail, I’ll deliver as promised

  11. Leo Weaver Says:

Yes it is joechip…reminds me I should spin it soon. And maybe the one from Hampton a week earlier.

Thanks for the rec and links @sumo…Mike show is DLing now. “beautifully designed and profusely illustrated mushroom bible”…looks like it, nice find.

    Happy Birthday purps!

  12. DukeOfLizards Says:

New Avatar Day was a great move.

  13. garretc Says:

    Ahh, happy birthday sir!

I don’t think you woulda seen this, cause it was the last post of the thread a couple days ago, but your description of your TV set up has me somehow even more excited for MSG than I was before!

  14. garretc Says:

Yeah, it’s a trip seeing all these new “faces” on the board!

I’m sticking with mine for now, because anytime I go looking for something aesthetic (avatar, clothes, etc) I always hate it a few days later… I’ve gotta find it when I’m not looking for it!

was just counting the days till Worcester when it struck me that christmas is before then. was looking forward to the show way more than the holiday, even though I’m pretty sure that I’ll be doing the cliche of popping the question to my girlfriend christmas eve. (been living together the last 4 years, probably time to make an honest woman out of her 🙂 … or at least buy myself another year or 2 before the wedding)

…also, I was at your birthday show too Mr. P. don’t remember much about it except getting pulled over and subsequently getting a miracle of a nice ct. state trooper who didn’t get me on a possession charge that he very easily had me nabbed for on the drive home.

  17. joe Says:

I didn’t want to participate in new avatar day so the man gave me the generic one?

  18. joechip Says:

Getting in the new avatar spirit…

  19. ChefBradford Says:

I got a new avatar about a week ago, can I use that as, like, a doctor’s excuse?

  20. ChefBradford Says:

I’m going to say, without shame, that I enjoy the Worcester Jim. Ever second of it? No. But It works, for me, far better than it has any right to, and the slide into the Weekapaug jam is excellent.

  21. voopa Says:

    Nice one, joechip.

Chef, you predicted this day last week. Nice foreshadowing!

  22. ChefBradford Says:

    Erm, “every”, not “ever”
