Miner’s Picks – Fall 2010

10.8.10 - ACL (Graham Lucas)

I have finally listened to Fall Tour enough to be able to drop “Miner’s Picks: Fall 2010.” But there were far too many highlights, that’s my problem right there. So instead of limiting myself to one version per song on a tour that featured a fairly tight rotation, I decided to split the run into three chronological chunks and form three mini-sets of fall jams. Obviously, I could have chosen multiple versions of almost all songs, but unless their was a dire need to double up, as in the case of a song combinations (“Pipers”) or two versions I couldn’t choose between (“Ghost”), I did my best to single out my favorite versions without repeating songs. Without further ado, here are my picks. (Torrent link is at the top of the list, direct download links are at the bottom.)

    Hey kids.

Been hitting small hits of lurking on the phone occasionally but work has been tough. 2010 was a hard year to navigate and the work to make sure 2011 is a great year for us has already started. Pretty much doubled my work load with some new responsibilities and can’t wait for the challenge of making a bunch of $$$ in 2011 (the fund not me). I’m just a foot soldier.

    few thoughts

I’ve been noticing Page’s piano chops during 3.0. first that they lacked pretty bad in 09 and then like Miner pointed out has started to rage of late. for me the Phish sound was always the way Page could fill rock n funk space on a piano behind a heavily driven guitar tone. It’s not a real natural fit that you hear going on in other bands but that space of heavy chords and flurrying runs has to fill a lot of space in a 4 piece band. Like Miner already stated the fact that BOwie has blown up is all you need to see to realize these stronger Page chops. It is the ultimate Piano rhythm based song and Page is finally playing where he can push the song again. Trey got the most shit for lacking chops early but I feel it def took some time of Page regaining his dexterity again and rediscovering how to fill that empty space behind the constantly evolving and flowing lead guitar. either way he’s back. and it’s great.

only real omission from the list for me is Brim Reba.
it really is one of my favorite jams even though the composition was rough as hell. Augusta is very creative and hip but the full band peak of Brim gets me every time.

but what a fuckin list. if anything says the boys are finally catching their sea legs is that fuckin list. awesome.

    have a good one kids

    Chicago kids:

I just got offered a summer internship at the Public Defender’s office in Kenosha, WI, and it looks like it might make the most sense to live in Chicago and just commute up.

    Im pretty stoked.

  5. KfL Says:

    congrats will

not just that list, but also the true highlights that didn’t make the cut

brim reba & bowie would have been all we talked about for 6 months if they dropped fall 09 instead of fall 10

  6. SillyWilly Says:

    Totally, KfL

remember the step up Miami was from the fall last year?

imagine what MSG could be this year?

it’s been such a fun year of Phish.

  14. jdub Says:

Amherst Roggae while not type 2 is certainly worth mentioning as a highlight from fall that is not on the list.

This new years run will be one for the ages. Not to put heavy expectations on it but the shows could make Miner’s fall list seem like a warmup.

  15. Chuck D Says:

whoa… emperor P, why have we not seen this compassion before? i thought you were the evil incarnate…

  16. phoammhead Says:

maybe the bb should start a fund . . . or sponsorship for the “right girl” – LOL – seriously, though!

  19. ChefBradford Says:

  23. Aquaman Says:

    Great write up Miner!

Albert on point as always – kudos.

Page is what was the key to me getting ‘IT’ way back when during the 5/6/92 show at St. Andrews Hall.

Two songs the demonstart e his licks for me are the Dixie Chicken and the Providence Loving Cup. Check ’em.

    Have a good mornin’ all.
