Miner’s Picks – Fall 2010

10.8.10 - ACL (Graham Lucas)

I have finally listened to Fall Tour enough to be able to drop “Miner’s Picks: Fall 2010.” But there were far too many highlights, that’s my problem right there. So instead of limiting myself to one version per song on a tour that featured a fairly tight rotation, I decided to split the run into three chronological chunks and form three mini-sets of fall jams. Obviously, I could have chosen multiple versions of almost all songs, but unless their was a dire need to double up, as in the case of a song combinations (“Pipers”) or two versions I couldn’t choose between (“Ghost”), I did my best to single out my favorite versions without repeating songs. Without further ado, here are my picks. (Torrent link is at the top of the list, direct download links are at the bottom.)

    @purple i’m so down. what do you play? i wish i could bring a guitar but i don’t want to take too much stuff with me

  2. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    in fact so, so, so down for that @purple

  3. DukeOfLizards Says:

    NYC BB jam session would be $$$$$. Non-notable guitarist here.

    Also special shout out – happy 15th birthday to the 1995.12.05 Hood, which is by a decent margin my favorite Hood of all time.

  4. Lycanthropist Says:

    jeez make it more painful that i wont be there for NYE guys jeez

  5. garretc Says:

    @Lycan

    I’m sure we could find a way to do that, be careful what you wish for…

    You wouldn’t want to be playing with a bunch of hacks like the rest of us though!

    Of course, I only speak for myself when I say hack, I don’t mean to denigrate the rest of your abilities…

  6. DukeOfLizards Says:

    Calling myself a hack may even be generous

  7. garretc Says:

    Well then, DukeOfLizards…

    You’re welcome

  8. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

  9. sumodie Says:

    grrr….web ate my comment (or is it moderated)…that link above is not trey’s house, possibly Mike’s (watch Mike’s Moss video to see why)

  10. sumodie Says:

    Mike Gordon’s 11-26-10 Portland ME show can now be dl’ed in mp3 format here:

    Previously I had recommended this show as the one to get if you wanted to check out one mike show -most of the show sounded great to these ears (Fishman joined in halfway thru set 1 and plays till the end)

    my top 3 highlights would be Little Feat’s Easy to Slip, Traveled too Far, and 15 Step

  11. Gavinsdad Says:

    Ball Reba. Nice. Thx to DF or Jtran for the reminder. Check out where Fish’s kickdrum is in the mix the entire show. Powerful. Pretty soaring and blissful version…yet another I hardly remember and I was there for it.

  12. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    I mentioned the ball free and soam, gonna listen to that reba soon now

  13. phoammhead Says:

    just played a little guitar here at home and think it’ll be best if i not try out for the bband – black board convention – sorry guys, but i think it’s best, really 🙂

  14. garretc Says:

    Damn, I guess they guys were really excited to play Carini for the first time, because 2/17/97 Carini is awesome…

  15. Mr.Palmer Says:

    no kidding Garretc. I feel like i should punish myself for never listening to that show. Epic fail. perhaps i should be relegated to custy status for a while. Even has a Timber for you.

  16. garretc Says:

    I know, right? And a good one at that Mr. P! It’s funny, cause I really really love open jams, but I like Timber so much because it’s just got that consistent, inevitable pulse throughout the whole thing… It never really seems to peak all that much, just keeps chugging along…

    Anyways, I don’t think I’ve heard any Spring Europe ’97, so I pulled 3/1/97 as well, which I hear is a little bit famous, as far as shows go…

    Oh, and I think I still liked 12/28/98 Carini > Wolfman’s more than this Carini though…

  17. Gavinsdad Says:

    Bless every one of you for helping me re-experience shows I saw many moons ago. Those 98 msg nye shows need a dust off as well (tho I hit em up last year cause of a nudge from Palmer)

    Headin into the city to my hideaway. Lil bane, lil beer sometimes i like sticking with the weekend til the bitter end. Be good people.

  18. oldskool Says:

    I was at that show Mr. P 🙂

    Often overlooked for some of the more famous Amsterdam shows. But you cannot imagine how hot-boxed that entire theatre was when they opened with Soul Shakedown.

  19. Jtran Says:

    If you haven’t revisited 10/30/09 in a while the portion of set II I listened to today was pretty great.

    DWD > Caspian > Wolfman’s > Piper > Joy

    Trey gets a bit lost when he hits an effect near the end of DWD, but otherwise the whole thing is real hip.

    Time to watch some football and revist some more 3.0 highlights

  20. oldskool Says:

    @Garretc,

    I think Winter Europe was possible the best tour I ever saw. Fall ’95 was obviously amazing as well. But hearing the progression of Phish truly transforming themselves on a nightly basis, in Europe, and with as few as a few hundred people at some of the shows…That is a feeling I will never be able to replicate.

  21. Jtran Says:

    Also spun that 2/17 II today. Hot set.

  22. Jtran Says:

    If anyone’s got a 12/30 ticket for sale please let me know

    jtranvt23 at gmail

    Just found out my buddy and his gf have an apartment to stay on “across the street from MSG” so I figure that’s worth adding another show is I can find a ticket.

  23. Mr.Palmer Says:

    “Often overlooked for some of the more famous Amsterdam shows.”

    exactly @ Oldskool. I’ve always been a 7.1, 7.2 ’97 slut. I gotta hit up those winter shows. Plus the tapes sound so great being from those tiny theaters.

    Jtran – they re released some 12/30’s on friday. those tickets will be available i think. Well, more available then the next 2 nights.

  24. Jtran Says:

    @Palmer

    If you hear anything you know where I live.

  25. garretc Says:

    @oldskool

    Yeah, club Phish must be unreal… Unfathomable!

    You picked a good time to be a phan!

    Although there have been very few bad times, have there?
