AW: my man, not sure if you were there last night, looked for you and did not see you. If you are up for it, you should hit the show tonight. Really really great, this band is on top of it.

    FYI:

someone has done a fresh transfer plus encoded a Matrix audio for the Island Run on the ‘Noid…

4/04/98 is up now, the others will follow.

  3. EL Duderino Says:

    these are dvd’s… sorry

  4. Robear Says:

top of the mornin’ all! Awesome way to stimulate discussion yesterday miner. Was too busy to participate. Trying to smooth over relationship bumps and re-acquire the kids.

I think the NYE run can be summed up quite simply. A lack of practice going in. Reminded me of Indio. Well played, pretty safe shows, with only a couple stabs at going deep. Great time had by all. They lost some of the ferocity and fluid navigational prowess by being off for two months bet. AC and NYE run.

Completely disagree that they can play a show like 1/1/11 anytime they want. Couldn’t disagree more in fact. That took 4 nights of playing together to hit that level of intimate trust and communication, IMO. Look at SC 2 from fall. 5 nights in. That’s been a tour sweet spot it seems. 4 – 7 shows in.

They continue to raise their own bar with the comeback. The phanbase continues to elevate our bar too. The happy medium will come with a bit more practice time. They will lose the interest of the older fan base with the song based / James Taylor sing alongs becoming more the norm than Greek III or Albany ’09.

    @ AJ:

which ‘Exploding Star’ folder to start with for the uninitiated?

We used to be able to count on 3 things in life:

Death, Taxes, and Phish elevating for a New Years run. Back down to 2 this year.

Gonna’ start out the day, ‘Crosseyed and Painless’ to celebrate.

  6. EL Duderino Says:

    NFL play-offs today Folks’!!!!

  7. albert walker Says:

    AJ

we had a dinner reservation for last night I thought was tonight

we were going to go up tonight instead

    they are great

  8. Mr. Palmer Says:

Christmas with the families + Trey being sick= no practice in the days before NY run.

Not that hard to figure out.

  9. Robear Says:

Palmer, after reading back to yesterday’s discussion, it seems hard for some phans, to figure out 😛

    trying to act casual

word duder. phunnest weekend since last weekend!

  10. Mr. Palmer Says:

I hear ya robear . I’m not one to buy into all these phish conspiracy theories.

  11. SillyWilly Says:

Maybe they’ll want to increase the tour quantities as they settle into their new life as Phish.

I think if they add 3 or 4 dates to each tour (so maybe 7 for all of summer and 4 for Fall) and then a 6-8 show run in december then we could really see some shows blow up.

i mean if they don’t want to practice (which is speculation, right?) why not make a little more money and have slightly longer tours?

  12. EL Duderino Says:

    time will tell.
Will Phish dedicate themselves to push on through or will they coast?

  13. EL Duderino Says:

    @ Silly

My feeling is that they don’t want to do extended tours anymore.

  14. albert walker Says:

I think they are just trying to stay off the road for long chunks for now

family reasons. easier in small pieces now that they are older

agreed though that longer tours could do amazing thins to the evolution of this era of Phish

all the best tours were huge compared to the little 12 show at a time tours they are during now

just when they start sounding great they are taking more time off

they were smoking by the end of fall
think if there were 10 more dates

  15. Robear Says:

@ Silly, all their past / great New Year’s runs saw them playing well into December. Check the dates.

    re: ‘C&P’

they could have called it ‘MSG Jam’ starting around 8 min. mark, if not for the vocal reprising. Great version.

  16. Mr. Palmer Says:

Gotta love phish fans. A week ago we are dry humping the aftermath of the new years run , now we are questioning the bands motives and practice schedule. Comical really.

  17. albert walker Says:

    yeah

the 95 new years run comes on the end of what could be the hottest chunk of Phish of all time

took a small time off before the NYE run but they were coming off a shit ton of dates

  18. Jtran Says:

Watching that set II 12/31 stream was pretty sweet. Great camera angles, good mix of close ups and CK5 (always could use more CK, but we know that will never happen).

For those of you that the stream worked for last weekend that must’ve been a cool experience.

  19. SillyWilly Says:

Yeah, see that’s what Im trying to think of….

Is there a way to keep off the road for a long time and yet maintain a little momentum?

Add a weekend to each summer leg, for example

play a weekend or two in march or april. just to keep sharp. wouldn’t even have to be a big production. Book some medium venues in the northeast so you wouldnt have to travel far.

i just hope there’s a way to achieve the balance and squeeze out 3 or 4 really great shows a year, ya know.

  20. EL Duderino Says:

you could say that for ’97 and ’98 as well

  21. albert walker Says:

they stopped practicing in 98 Palmer

I’m not asking for them to start

I’m perfectly happy with there effort. it it what it is. it’s fun.

just from seeing Brimfield and the MSG run compared to AC I’ve found it in my own best interest to catch stuff on the tail end of tours when they have shows under the belts

I mean I just listened to this 12/31 set III and I’m sure they were tired but it has been comically uneventful

coming off a ripping set II mind you

  22. Jtran Says:

They played well into December in 97 and 99 too. Go figure.

  23. albert walker Says:

Toyota they practiced 3 nights at UIC and they ripped

it doesn’t take much for them to get tight
    a few nights of work

I loved that show and it was tour opener but I guarantee they shedded some shit for that show

  24. SillyWilly Says:

I’m not trying to throw shit at Phish.

Just speculating how they could carry their momentum forward a little bit. I had a blast this year. I was in heaven in AC.

Just trying to make some constructive criticisms about 2011. that’s all.

  25. albert walker Says:

I’d much rather focus on the amazing jams of the run

7 below, Hood, Stash, Bathtub Bathtub Timber, Sand, Ghost, Simple, Makisupa

there is a lot of continued evolution in the jamming and the sounds

and how hot they sounded in AC coming at the end of the tour

those two things together bode well for summer 2011 I believe

we shall see. it will be fun
