Ten Tunes For Friday: Spring ’92

Spring 1992 T-Shirt (Pollock)

Last Friday we looked at highlights from 2010, and this Friday we dig eighteen years earlier into the Spring of 1992. This year ushered in an era of creative growth that would peak at the end of 1995. Let’s take a look at one of Phish’s early creative peaks in Spring 1992—in exclusively soundboard fashion. Happy Friday!

Reba” 4.17.92 I

A first set gem from Phish’s first visit to The Warfield in San Francisco.

Antelope > BBFCFM > Antelope” 3.13.92 II

A classic segment from Providence, Rhode Island, that anyone who collected analogs has heard at least twenty times.

David Bowie” 4.13.92 I

6.25.10 (G. Lucas)

This first set closer in Tempe, Arizona features some early-era groove at the onset of the jam that just kills.

Stash” 4.13.92 I

Here is the “Stash” from earlier from the same set in Tempe.

Split Open and Melt” 4.5.92 II

This compact and powerful version kicked off the second set at the minuscule Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado.

Colonel Forbin’s > Icculus > Mockingbird” 4.16.92 I

1992

Another classic relic of the analog era; Trey slaughters “Mockingbird” like few other versions.

Tweezer” 4.21.92 II

This sublime “Tweezer” from Eureka, California is one of my favorites, regardless of era.

***

Harry Hood” 3.20.92 II

6.27.10 (G.Lucas)

This divine “Harry Hood” came in the middle of the second set in spectacular outing in Binghamton, New York.

    about to dive back into the leaked sbds. I cannot stop listening to that 5.17.92 possum (so many other songs being interpolated in there) and the bluesy Fixin’ to Die from the IU soundcheck is pretty tasty too. l

    ast night I got completely and utterly lost in that Disease>Free to the point where I actually had to pause it for a second to collect myself.

    and then there’s the OJ Mike’s Groove. and that SOAM from Boulder. and that unique wedge. and the Went Gin. and the aaaaaahhh!!! there’s so much goodness in there!!!

  5. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

  11. DukeOfLizards Says:

    @T3

    I think it was the combo of it being Friday night in NYC and the fact that it wasn’t that big of a venue (~2k capacity I believe). LOADS of people cruising around for extras. I ended up bailing after a while for SLF duties, not sure if he made it in.

    First BBer I’ve met in person though, so not a total loss.

  12. DukeOfLizards Says:

  18. kenny powers Says:

    possibly greatest 2001 ever

  19. kenny powers Says:

    4/5/98

    8/15/98 ambient set

  20. DukeOfLizards Says:

    @KfL

    Yeah, funny part is we both could’ve picked stubs up on TM in the past 24 hours, just didn’t grab em. Then the show sold out, and the rest is history. Like I said, he stuck around, may have made it in. Jury’s out.

    @KP

    That is one heady lineup. Cheers, sir.

  21. willowed Says:

    For willowed

    1) 1st night Clifford Ball Never experienced anything like it. Overwlemed with joy

    2) 6/30/2000 Hartford. Best rolls I ever ate.

  22. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @willowed
    did you ever try drinking cisco wine back in the day? (that website is awesome, btw)

    man, that stuff will turn you sideways and make you wish it was next week. I had some friends in college who used to have this thing called the “cisco challenge” where you had to drink a bottle of cisco in 30 minutes. your relative reaction to the experience earned you a whiteboy spanglish nickname that got added to this racially stereotypical drawing on the wall. I was never stupid enough to take the challenge, however, I did find the names pretty amusing.

    I always thought drinking 40s was somewhat similar. you have an idea going in what direction your evening is headed.

  23. kenny powers Says:

    i dont want to toot my own horn but check out this 9.22.99 show with the 2001 opener

  24. DukeOfLizards Says:

    @willowed

    It’s a tie.

    JB 1 this year – I spent the better part of a year “complaining” about lackluster Mike’s Grooves, so I spent the entire second set just laughing my ass off out of pure enjoyment.

    And 12/31/10. First New Year’s. Come on.

  25. KWL Says:

    oh… i meant sorry the first BBer you met was mitch 😯

    but ya… that sucks about the tix too. been in that exact same situation myself.
