Ten Tunes For Friday: Spring ’92

Spring 1992 T-Shirt (Pollock)

Last Friday we looked at highlights from 2010, and this Friday we dig eighteen years earlier into the Spring of 1992. This year ushered in an era of creative growth that would peak at the end of 1995. Let’s take a look at one of Phish’s early creative peaks in Spring 1992—in exclusively soundboard fashion. Happy Friday!

Reba” 4.17.92 I

A first set gem from Phish’s first visit to The Warfield in San Francisco.

Antelope > BBFCFM > Antelope” 3.13.92 II

A classic segment from Providence, Rhode Island, that anyone who collected analogs has heard at least twenty times.

David Bowie” 4.13.92 I

6.25.10 (G. Lucas)

This first set closer in Tempe, Arizona features some early-era groove at the onset of the jam that just kills.

Stash” 4.13.92 I

Here is the “Stash” from earlier from the same set in Tempe.

Split Open and Melt” 4.5.92 II

This compact and powerful version kicked off the second set at the minuscule Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado.

Colonel Forbin’s > Icculus > Mockingbird” 4.16.92 I

1992

Another classic relic of the analog era; Trey slaughters “Mockingbird” like few other versions.

***

Tweezer” 4.21.92 II

This sublime “Tweezer” from Eureka, California is one of my favorites, regardless of era.

***

Harry Hood” 3.20.92 II

6.27.10 (G.Lucas)

This divine “Harry Hood” came in the middle of the second set in spectacular outing in Binghamton, New York.

A mid-set scorcher from Trax in Charlottesville, Virginia.

    Funny story. Drank 40’s in highschool. 90-94. Haven’t touched a 40 since. Until………………….

Me and my boy decided to buy a couple before a recent show. Guess which one.

    Albany 2

Yup…I need to drink 40’s more often.

    As TIII states:

Your night will always head in a weird direction

  4. BrandonKayda Says:

Hmm. The beginning of the gorgeous jam in the MPP Rock and Roll or the section around 10:50-11:20 in the MPP Tweezer when Trey decided to melt brains with his guitar tone.

Then again I don’t really count, as I’ve only seen two shows.

What are you up to tonight, @Duke?

  5. kenny powers Says:

    i’m five years old.

  6. garretc Says:

    @KP

Yeah, Memphis 2001 is the definition of “too sick”. When Trey switches on that heavy delay tone it took me about a minute to realize that he wasn’t actually playing backwards… I even thought he might have just recorded his earlier solo and flipped it and played over it…

  7. kenny powers Says:

    Big Cypress Crosseyed

  9. garretc Says:

    @Duke

The first note of Trey’s guitar solo coming out of the Sand staccato jam on NYE. Filthy.

  10. garretc Says:

    @kp

    Agreed

  11. DukeOfLizards Says:

  14. KWL Says:

  18. neemor Says:

My new favorite note is Mike’s tremendous, otherworldly bass bomb in the Tweeprise at AC this fall. Nutso.

Salivating Set I, 4.5.98 on DVD.
The Island Tour was something special.
    Great stuff.
Entire set was solid versions, everything with that thick layer of funk…
    Gin>Cities was wonderful.
    Melt to close the set?
In the words of kaya, $$$$.

    On to set dos.

  19. willowed Says:

I also feel the facemelter 5000 from the AC Jibboo was legit

    OK

Later. I have to go to bed

  20. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

clifford ball is a really good choice, willowed. I have amazing memories about the whole day and the show was pretty much everything that I looked for in phish at that time.

for me, new year’s 96 in boston is up there. crest’d on the floor for new year’s.

can I say the entire 97 nye run? I guess I just did. fantastic stuff. fun ass nights fer shur

  21. DukeOfLizards Says:

1998.04.03 is the best show the Phish have ever played. It would take a good deal for me to change my mind about that.

  22. neemor Says:

My favorite moment this year is tough to pick out, too, KWL.
    So, so many good memories.

    Musically, the Mike’s>Sanity>Weekapaug from Providence.
If I had to pick one. Maybe my first Lengthwise?

    BlackBoard related?
Possibly Jones Beach pre and during show (at the top of the venue-impromptu meet-up).
    Porta-potties at Hershey?
    BTB Fest?
    MSG.
Any number of in-house BB meet-ups at WWheel with the Bear?
Such a great year of PH for this guy.
    Thanks to the Board.

  23. BrandonKayda Says:

It took me awhile to realize that the Island Tour took place in doors. I’m serious. I had heard the shows, and seen just like the Roses are Free/Twist video, and I thought for a long time the shows were outside. I basically just went “well, this is a different Nassau than 2003.2.28” llfa.

  24. Gavinsdad Says:

Nugget nectar. You are my friend

  25. kenny powers Says:

    @ neemor

i like the song “Run Like An Antelope”.
