Ten Tunes For Friday: Spring ’92

Spring 1992 T-Shirt (Pollock)

Last Friday we looked at highlights from 2010, and this Friday we dig eighteen years earlier into the Spring of 1992. This year ushered in an era of creative growth that would peak at the end of 1995. Let’s take a look at one of Phish’s early creative peaks in Spring 1992—in exclusively soundboard fashion. Happy Friday!

Reba” 4.17.92 I

A first set gem from Phish’s first visit to The Warfield in San Francisco.

Antelope > BBFCFM > Antelope” 3.13.92 II

A classic segment from Providence, Rhode Island, that anyone who collected analogs has heard at least twenty times.

David Bowie” 4.13.92 I

6.25.10 (G. Lucas)

This first set closer in Tempe, Arizona features some early-era groove at the onset of the jam that just kills.

Stash” 4.13.92 I

Here is the “Stash” from earlier from the same set in Tempe.

Split Open and Melt” 4.5.92 II

This compact and powerful version kicked off the second set at the minuscule Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado.

Colonel Forbin’s > Icculus > Mockingbird” 4.16.92 I

1992

Another classic relic of the analog era; Trey slaughters “Mockingbird” like few other versions.

***

Tweezer” 4.21.92 II

This sublime “Tweezer” from Eureka, California is one of my favorites, regardless of era.

***

Harry Hood” 3.20.92 II

6.27.10 (G.Lucas)

This divine “Harry Hood” came in the middle of the second set in spectacular outing in Binghamton, New York.

You Enjoy Myself” 3.25.92 II

A mid-set scorcher from Trax in Charlottesville, Virginia.

    garret, if I can copy these, I’ll make you copies and save them for the next time I meet you (or pop them in the mailbox).
    I’ll let you know how I make out.

  2. DukeOfLizards Says:

    @neems

    I like your style, dude.

  3. KWL Says:

    trey fills a ton of space in these 99 sets

  4. garretc Says:

    @neemor

    That’d be dope man, thanks!

  5. neemor Says:

    Likewise, Duke.

    Spinning the Forbin’s>Icculus>Mockingbird right now for my virgin taste.
    Not sure if I’ve ever heard it.
    I love the fact that finally I (we) get to hear these shows the way they were played.
    Analog, sixth gen hissy aud’s are a long way off in the past and there’s something to be said for their nostalgic poor quality, but it’s great to hear these things as they were meant to be.

    Not much of an Icculus there, I prefer the Hartford ’09 version, but all of this Trey banter in the boys’ first trip to SoCal must’ve tossed some people for a loop.
    I bet a few never wanted to see them again.
    I bet even more have never left.

  6. neemor Says:

    Icculus is so great and knowledgable.

  7. neemor Says:

    Helping benly frook.

  8. neemor Says:

    Tonight is going to be one of those nights when I go back in time and try to find my OP.
    (Original post).
    Still have yet to find it.
    My quest.

  9. KWL Says:

    winter 01 has always been my favorite trey tour but there is some straight nasty trey in this 99 set.

  10. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

    wow neemor interesting idea
    id like to do that too

  11. garretc Says:

    @neemor

    Gave it a shot, couldn’t find it, gave up…

    Wow, that reads almost exactly like the text I sent Jtran on 12/31 about WW… Haha.

    But I’m sure I’ll give it another shot eventually

  12. neemor Says:

    Yeah.
    I’ve been trying to find my OP for about a year now off and on.
    Once a month or so.
    There’s so much good info on this site that usually I get side-tracked and end up reading old posts and abandoning my quest….
    One of these days.
    Not sure what I’ll do when I find it.
    Probably be pretty anti-climactic.
    Like, what would a dog do if he caught that cat?

    Maybe I’d lick the screen.

  13. Jtran Says:

    Garret come to Burlington

    good night

  14. garretc Says:

    @Jtran

    I’m trying! Need to get ahold of a couple hours I don’t need to kick it with the fam… I will, quite frankly, be pissed if I spend this long 45 minutes away from you and not kick it…

  15. ChefBradford Says:

    If anyone’s around, can you point me toward a GDead show that may be available as a stream at the Archive? I’m not a big fan by any stretch, not much of a fan at all. Sometimes I feel the urge thought, and this is one of those times. I seem to prefer, based on what I’ve heard, pre-75ish? Open to suggestion

    Also, @Neemor: Do Kung Fu and/or the Breadkfast still stream live shows?

  16. ChefBradford Says:

    thought=though

  17. DukeOfLizards Says:

    @chef

    I am also a moderate-at-best GD fan (at the moment), but I’ve dug absolutely everything I’ve spun from the Europe ’72 tour. There are a ton of SBDs up on the archive from that tour taboot.

  18. neemor Says:

    Found my first post!
    7.28.09….
    My second post, though, is the one that got me:

    “Oh, and I think I’ll know IT’s ON when the first >Catapult> wriggles it’s way out of the muddy darkness.
    Hartford 8/14/09 Set II:
    Guelah Papyrus,Mike’s>Catapult>H2>Catapult>Icculus>Papyrus Jam>Scents>Weekapaugh
    Encore: Jesus Just Left Chicago”

    Actual second set from that date (8.14.09)
    Set 2: Down with Disease[1] > Wilson > Slave to the Traffic Light, Piper[2] > Water in the Sky, Ghost -> Psycho Killer -> Catapult -> Icculus[3] > You Enjoy Myself

    I fucking called the Catapult>Icculus?
    That’s one for the books!

  19. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

    neemor, i found mine. and i can find yours

    SPEAKING OF THE 2009 ALBUM…
    had an opportunity to talk to CJ Eiriksson, the engineer for the new album, last night at a bar. he obviously cudnt give me any details about things or he said he’d have to kill me. but he did say the new stuff sounds great and they should finish up a few days before fenway. just a cool note/experience

  20. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

  22. ChefBradford Says:

    Thank you @ Duke, duly noted…I have a vinyl live Dead thing somewhere, but my turntable is dead, again; I’ll check up though, thanks again

    found what I think was my OP awhile back, don’t remember when it was though. Possibly during ? Idunno

  23. ChefBradford Says:

    ^ was being pimped here a few days ago. Spun it from start to finish at work this week, super hot stuff.

  25. neemor Says:

    Catapult>Icculus.

    I claimed that that’s when I’d know that Phish was back for good.
    I still feel like that was a turning point. (8.14.09)
    And one of my favorite shows.
    I cried during that Icculus.
    Tears of extreme joy.

    I feel special.
