Ten Tunes For Friday: Spring ’92

Spring 1992 T-Shirt (Pollock)

Last Friday we looked at highlights from 2010, and this Friday we dig eighteen years earlier into the Spring of 1992. This year ushered in an era of creative growth that would peak at the end of 1995. Let’s take a look at one of Phish’s early creative peaks in Spring 1992—in exclusively soundboard fashion. Happy Friday!

Antelope > BBFCFM > Antelope” 3.13.92 II

A classic segment from Providence, Rhode Island, that anyone who collected analogs has heard at least twenty times.

David Bowie” 4.13.92 I

Split Open and Melt” 4.5.92 II

This compact and powerful version kicked off the second set at the minuscule Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado.

Colonel Forbin’s > Icculus > Mockingbird” 4.16.92 I

1992

Another classic relic of the analog era; Trey slaughters “Mockingbird” like few other versions.

Harry Hood” 3.20.92 II

This divine “Harry Hood” came in the middle of the second set in spectacular outing in Binghamton, New York.

Nuts! Small world I guess! On the way back from the skiing down the Snow Bowl in their gowns part of the whole deal, that was very cool (and cold, of course!)

  2. joe Says:

very stange tweezer (in a good way), I like it.

thanks for the trip down memory lane, Mr. Miner. First show was in 1992, but not super into them till 1994. Although, this is the era the old tapes I spun were from. Can anybody answer when the echo stopped being used as much on the vocals?

  3. Gavinsdad Says:

I have a very reliable source that is so reliable he won’t leak a thing.

  4. ae Says:

Had breakfast at char 4 – mr p, are you friends with the owner? Re-confirmed, good spot.

Williowed, that is such a bad rumor.

  5. Mr. Palmer Says:

Damn, they are gonna fuck up Watkins. Too bad. Fireworks w/ the kiddies for me. Enjoy.

  6. Mr. Palmer Says:

ae- One of my good friends from high school. His name is Mike.

  7. garretc Says:

My source has never been wrong. Nor right. Nor has he ever been.

    Because I don’t have a source. Too custy for that I guess…

  8. bouncin fan Says:

I’m digging the 99 Trey Band also Palmer

in the middle of my second show now. favorite jam so far is the Riviera Sand. very cool version.

each version of a lot of these jams are pretty unique. the jibboo from the Riv was all Trey playing Rhythm licks over the groove. this Wisconsin version is the more traditional picked solo. both great.

  9. bouncin fan Says:

Will It Go Round In Circles >
    Jibboo
    Further on up the Road
    Mozambique

to open the show. hot stuff.

    5/8/99 Oscar Mayer Theater

    Madison, WI

@garretc Feb graduation is a ton of fun!

I have spent a lot of time in that neck of the woods – probably just as much as I spent in school there!

I wonder if I might know your brother – shoot me an email at

yetanotherfakeemail420 at gee male if you like

  11. butterflyeffect Says:

funny how you and your bro ended up at the two schools i decided between for undergrad

  12. Mr. Palmer Says:

the jam out of Ooh Child in that Riv show was pretty slick as well.

I don’t know what it is about trios, but i love them. Such a simplistic power to them i guess.

After Katrina i went to benefit show at Radio City. I think Trey was the headliner, Besides Trey though, the highlight for me was another trio. I know i’ll get shit for this, but the John Mayer Trio was some of the hottest playing i had seen in a long time. Say what you want about the douche, but he can play guitar.

  13. garretc Says:

    @butterfly

Yeah, especially since my brother and I are very different people!

  14. KWL Says:

spun parts of 5-6 and 5-8 last night and agree, it is pretty hot. better than i remember that tour being, though i haven’t listened to any of it in years. the variation in trey’s playing over the rock steady groove is impressive.

right now, though, 2-17-97 dwd>carini>taste>dwd. the shit is ridiculous.

  15. themanatee Says:

trey pwoer trio ooh childs are where its at

  16. Spasm Waiter Says:

Hey gang. Super hung thos morning as well. Gonna go to a vineyard to taste wine then come home and make osso bucco. Clearly learning my lesson here.

  17. ae Says:

Loved those ooh childs as well.

  18. bouncin fan Says:

    these mpp remasters sound great

  19. vegas wolfmans Says:

Who’s got my hetty “best of” trey power trio compilation (KP-I’m looking at you 8))?

    That would be awesome.

  20. vegas wolfmans Says:

    8) fail

  21. vegas wolfmans Says:

Palmer- Not sure why, but Mayer is good friends with that band Galactic. When I lived down there (NOLA), he’d regularly sit in with them and freaking kill it. Definitely a douchebag, but the man can play.

Currently pulling some shows from that trey ’99 torrent.

    PEACE

  22. lastwaltzer Says:

    @willowed,

you need to supply some good news, pronto……..

    @BF

Are they substantially better? I may grab that one of the three.

  23. BingosBrother Says:

Mayer can play, but I’ll never get past his lyrics. Some of the worst since Lenny Kravitz. Do what you do best and hire a writer to do what he does best. Please.

  24. bouncin fan Says:

don’t know how much better. but better. def a more even sounding finished mix. clearer more separation it seems.

I’d have a better idea compared to a show I spin more often like Greek 3

this first set isn’t very good. Walfredo, Mellow Mood. rough.

  25. lastwaltzer Says:

Word, I’m looking forward to that greek re-master.

Can’t say I’m to found of any of the shows they’ve selected, except for greek 3
