Ten Tunes For Friday: Spring ’92

Spring 1992 T-Shirt (Pollock)

Last Friday we looked at highlights from 2010, and this Friday we dig eighteen years earlier into the Spring of 1992. This year ushered in an era of creative growth that would peak at the end of 1995. Let’s take a look at one of Phish’s early creative peaks in Spring 1992—in exclusively soundboard fashion. Happy Friday!

Reba” 4.17.92 I

A first set gem from Phish’s first visit to The Warfield in San Francisco.

Antelope > BBFCFM > Antelope” 3.13.92 II

A classic segment from Providence, Rhode Island, that anyone who collected analogs has heard at least twenty times.

David Bowie” 4.13.92 I

6.25.10 (G. Lucas)

This first set closer in Tempe, Arizona features some early-era groove at the onset of the jam that just kills.

Stash” 4.13.92 I

Here is the “Stash” from earlier from the same set in Tempe.

Split Open and Melt” 4.5.92 II

This compact and powerful version kicked off the second set at the minuscule Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado.

Colonel Forbin’s > Icculus > Mockingbird” 4.16.92 I

1992

Another classic relic of the analog era; Trey slaughters “Mockingbird” like few other versions.

Tweezer” 4.21.92 II

This sublime “Tweezer” from Eureka, California is one of my favorites, regardless of era.

Harry Hood” 3.20.92 II

6.27.10 (G.Lucas)

This divine “Harry Hood” came in the middle of the second set in spectacular outing in Binghamton, New York.

Speaking of Breakfast, an impressive unveiling of Inca Roads…

Do yourselves a favor and see this band anytime they’re within a 45 minute drive.

  2. Henry Says:

    I’m digging this neemor

  3. Aquaman Says:

    @BBrothers

I have seen Kravitz 8 times. Loved each show. Rest assured, you don’t go to Kravitz shows for lyrics.

Cindy Blackamn his drummer is straight up the secomd coming of John Bonham.

You can avoid Lenny, but look into Cindy. She rocks.

  4. Mr.Miner Says:

what up y’all….sorry for lack of w.nugs…i’ll try to get something posted today…if not, keeping rocking with Spring ’92….

Any Nova fans in here? If so……HOYA SAXA! What uuuuup!

  5. Aquaman Says:

Love that HD recording Neemor. Looking pretty good on the HDTV right now.

  6. Aquaman Says:

    Reader request Miner my man.

5/6/1992 YEM > Shaggy Dog or the Reba form the same show, please.

    With sugar on top.

  7. lastwaltzer Says:

    Aqua……….8 times?!?!

  8. Aquaman Says:

I know sounds absurd. But for a while I really liked his concerts.

First time was 1989 as an opener for the Cult. Blew the Cult away which is saying something. I also felt like every time he came to Aragon or Riv I was there.

He is a performer, I have to give him that. Much like Vedder. I may not like Pearl Jam, but Vedder is a performer. Feel the same way about Lenny.

  9. Mr.Miner Says:

    @ aqua…if i dont post today..monday you got it

  10. neemor Says:

Glad you guys liked it…Breakfast is never a band to shy away from the Zappa compositions and they hold them down ina big way.
How you been, Henry? Long time…

Miner, I posted a couple of questions last night, didn’t see a response…
    Repost**
    Miner:
    Two things…

    1) I would love a post someday of trivia gleaned from the past pages of phishthougts.com, all sorts of little tid-bits like the fact that you’re a dark meat fan at Thanksgiving time. No incentive needed besides the sheer competition of the thing.

    2) Also, I found myself curious if you get any personal satisfaction from this blog or if you’ve learned anything from us, the readers or if we’ve changed or added to your viewpoints on anything (especially PH related).
    Just curious.

Good night, blackboard. Or should I say, Good morning?

  11. BingosBrother Says:

    @aqua :

I wish that I could fly
    Into the sky
    So very high
    Just like a dragonfly

Rhyming fly twice in the same verse? Kill me now.

  12. neemor Says:

I wish that I could jump
    Fourteen stories high
They’d all look at me in my jump
    And say, “Wow!”
    That’s really high.

  13. Foul_Domain Says:

    I’ll 2nd Aqua on Lenny’s drummer.

I dont care much for the band as a whole, but she’s got game for sure.

Did you know she auditioned over the phone @Aqua?

Somebody close to Lenny recommended her, he called her up and said put the phone next to the kit. She hopped on and played for a bit, and he hired her over the phone.

    Pretty cool

  14. Aquaman Says:

    @Miner

    Thanks!!

    @Bingos

Agreed. Not everyone is Robert Hunter or Lou Reed. That said I did find myself visiting his album Circus, which he wrote in the wake of his Mother’s death (Roxy Roker of Jefferson’s fame), after my dad died. This fact could mean I look at his discography with slightly rose colored glasses.

  15. lastwaltzer Says:

    lenny fucking kravitz.

  16. Foul_Domain Says:

^ I think thats his actual middle name

  17. Foul_Domain Says:

Goddam Lenny Fucking Kravitz is the proper full name, I do believe.

  18. garretc Says:

If you include his actual, seldom used last name, it actually is:

    Goddamn Lenny Fucking Kravitz, AreYouShittingMe?

But for obvious reasons he just lops off his name at Kravitz…

(Obvious reason being that punctuation marks in names can mess with registration type software, in case you’re oblivious…)

  19. lastwaltzer Says:

while i’d love to sit around and discuss the finer points of his career………….I’m out.

  20. Foul_Domain Says:

@lw…you’re coming back for the DMB highlight convo though, right?

  21. Mr. Palmer Says:

Got no gripes with Kravitz. Seen him 3 times or so. Always had fun. Like Aqua said, not everyone is hunter or reed. Its just music. Its supposed to be fun. Doesn’t have to have a deeper meaning and all that stuff , all the time.

  22. lastwaltzer Says:

Okay…………and how many times have you guys seen bryan adams?

  23. Aquaman Says:

    @Bingos

So, I will admit to having just gone out and searched for some choice lyric to send your way………couldn’t do it. Total fail. When reading his lyrics without beats or melody, it comes off as a love sick high schooler trying to pull trim.

In closing let me leave you with a truly butt shaking lyric (when accompanied by music)

“We’ve go to love and rub-a-dub
We’ve go to dance and be in love”

True ‘dat Rev. Lenny. True ‘dat.

    -Aqua-

  24. lastwaltzer Says:

so let me get this straight Lenny Kravitz is cool and Dave Matthew is whack?

Isn’t it all just pop music?

  25. lastwaltzer Says:

oh and I’m just fucking with you guys, I’m sure there is some shit I like that you’d all be like WTF?!?!
