A Winter Playlist

Blizzard!

It seems like just about everyone in the country is getting slammed by snow and winter weather this week except the west coast. Even though the sun in shining outside my window, I put together a winter and snow themed playlist for your snow days, slow work days, or fireplace listening sessions. Each selection has a blurb connecting it to snow or winter.

Seven Below > What’s The Use?” 12.27.10 II

After fans braved blizzard conditions to get to Worcester this past December, Phish dropped this winter-laced highlight among new crystals of New England snow.

8.10.10 (G.Lucas)

Walls of the Cave > Carini” 2.14.03 II

Though this gargantuan excursion took place in Los Angeles with no snow in sight, it happened in the dead of winter, kicking off the band’s 2003 return to the road.

***

You Enjoy Myself” 12.9.95 II

With snow pounding the area, Phish pounded their instruments, dropping the virtually-agreed-upon greatest “YEM” ever.

7.10.03 (A.Markarian)

Slave to the Traffic Light” 12.5.97 II

A driving Midwestern snow storm separated many fans from this show, but when they got to Cleveland, this unorthodox “Slave” was but one of the treats found inside.

Bathtub Gin” 2.22.03 II

This “Gin” provided the centerpiece in the final set of a snow-filled weekend in Cincinnati along the road of  February ’03.

An early version of “Twist” that turned into “2001” at sunset at Riverport ’97.

DOWNLOAD OF THE DAY:

12.17.1999 Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, Virginia

Hampton '99 (Pollock)

This relatively lackluster effort would be outshined by its surrounding shows, though deep into the night, Phish threw down a dark horse “Split” that salvaged the second set. In addition, the second set features a massive psychedelic soundscape that was used as the music behind the band’s comeback announcement. This Hampton show goes out to Hampton resident, Justin, via reader request.

I: Piper, Meat, Sparkle, Jibboo, Punch You In the Eye, When the Circus Comes, Water in the Sky, Twist

II: Birds of a Feather, The Moma Dance* > jam > Bug, Jennifer Dances, Split Open and Melt, Character Zero

E:The Old Home Place, The Squirming Coil, Loving Cup

* w/ Birds teases

Just got back from seeing 127 Hours, the new James Franco movie. A true tale of the guy that gets stuck in the Utah Canyonlands and has to cut off most of his arm to get himself free.
    Some very Phishy goings-on…

    1) The familiar scene from the trailer, where he drops through a crevasse with those two girls, down into a cavern pool, when he hits the water, he starts reciting (loudly) the lyrics to Sleeping Monkey.

    2) Towards the end of the film, going back through the footage he’s shot on his hand-held camera, the girls giggle and give him the advice that if he ever wants to get a girlfriend, he needs to be more careful with his musical choices. Phish won’t get him a girl!

    3) He wears a Phish t-shirt (I think Summer 2009-which isn’t historically accurate as the film is supposed to take place in 2003) though the entire film.

So, this film is required Phish fan viewing. Pretty good film, too.

  11. mitch Says:

have we discussed this? i’m an alum. or did you just wanna watch? i just checked all of my channels and its not on. bogus.

down with purdue. (where you at lurkers)

  12. mitch Says:

i’ve got more channels than i’ve ever had in my life was my point. goes to show theres never anything on tv. directv i have over 500 channels. this is absurd.

  13. mitch Says:

    neems,
people at work came to me and told me to go see it. said i’d appreciate it. dig.

  14. Mr. Palmer Says:

I read that book actually. Lots of Phish references. I think he got a shout out at a show somewhere after his accident. I could be wrong. Crazy story, that’s for sure. I’d like to see it.

  15. mitch Says:

haha game was on at 6:30, im being a burnout over here.

  16. Henry Says:

“also if you hear a lot of hype about something and then sit down and listen to it (sober especially) you tend to be more critical, waiting for something to knock you over. that mindset is not where IT resides. that’s what i love about listening to a show or a jam i didn’t really know about and then BAM it totally takes you off guard.”

Inversely it’s INCREDIBLE when a hyped up song over exceeds your expectations and you understand immediately why it’s so renowned. happened to me the first time i heard the Went Gin.

  17. neemor Says:

    I applaud the wardrobe designers:
The tee was from Fall 2000

  18. mitch Says:

happened to me when i first heard radio city ghost. poo g reminded me of that today.

  19. mitch Says:

i think they know how obsessive our fan base is. 😉

  20. Mike in Austin Says:

Sorry for throwing you off. Indiana/Mn played at 6:30. Held out until the end. They just beat Illinois too. While they haven’t had a great year overall to date, they’re winning some big games.

I got my Bachelors at MN, and went to UT for Masters.

I’ll take Texas football any day over Gophers. Looks like it’s gonna be BBall too now.

  21. ThePigSong Says:

What’s going on with the bb? Been a few days, SICK jams today!! Thissite never ceases to amaze me.

  22. willowed Says:

  23. neemor Says:

    No sleeping.

Thought they played at 8 pm. Mn is collapsing worse than Mi State.

    Come on, dude…!

  25. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

got some catching up to do after the daily shoveling to phish session…

Sumo, sorry to hear about G’s loss. All the best to both of you.

Willowed, I love ya buddy, but I can’t get on board with the pcp you are apparently smoking tonight.

KP, when we getting beers? Maybe a night or day this weekend?

Neemor, thanks for the mini-review on 127 hrs. I have issues with the subject matter that I don’t really want to get into now, but I’ll definitely check the film out. The trailers I saw are intriguing.
