Great post on the ballads, Miner. Thanks for sharing that.

+5 for use of the word “melancholic”

Going in for an 8/7 remaster listen with the headphones…what a show.

    later gaters

  2. gavinsdad Says:

“If you keep an open soul to receive the Phish, you have come to appreciate and understand the purpose of these songs.”

^right on @Miner…thx for the linkage

  3. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

acoustic Taste from those ’99 TAB shows is pretty dope. obviously lacks the jam at the end, but…

tweezer>mist is always gonna be my go to from that “ecentre” 99 show. gotta say…i went to that show and wasn’t really paying attention…while i like to say that i don’t get peeved at setlist i was really not digging on water>chicken shack>sparkle at the time. shit threw me off my game. i was in the moat that nite too…prob danced my ass off to the Gin but have no memory of it.

nice to have LP releases, respins, etc.

  5. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

trey totally tries to convince the crowd in the 5.19.99 show to start a naked orgy that will still be talked about for years to come. (ok, not really but this was the first show ever at the fillmore in denver and he is bantery as all get out). probably would’ve gained more steam if not placed between B+R and MitM. not quite the funky love inducing type of songs.

  6. Mr. Palmer Says:

gdad- i was on the lawn for that with one buddy and two first timers. They must of enjoyed it because i’ve gone to probably 30 shows with one or another in the last 10 years. I also remember watching kids on the lawn doing lines off of mirrors. Who the fuck brings a little mirror to a phish show? I guess this was the period where things were getting ugly.

  7. butter Says:

Miner thats a $$$ article on ballads

blown away you were in full fledged Phish mode like that before a show even kicked off in 3.0

  8. gavinsdad Says:

yeah @palms…i was clean as a whistle in ’99 but island tour ’98 was when i saw the crowd turning way way gnar. by ’99 fan darkness was commonplace.

  9. gavinsdad Says:

one day i’ll tell my Hampton ’99 story about “Stanky Danky”

  10. halcyon Says:

Don’t know if anyone saw this, or posted this earlier, but this is a cool lengthy read on Dick Lavatla

  11. Mr. Palmer Says:

T3- i’ve been spinning a bunch of the ’99 stuff myself. I just grabbed 4 shows at random. Not sure i have the 19th. The Murat and the Riv. chi-town are the ones getting the most spins. I think i grabbed two shows from the beginning of that tour and then two from the end. gotta check.

I honestly have skipped the majority of the acoustic stuff. Not because i hate it, i was just impatient and wanted to hear the trio. I love the covers they did back then . They should bring some of those back. Circles, Ooh Child, voodoo child, can see clearly now, come on baby , lets go d’town!

  12. BingosBrother Says:

“one day i’ll tell my Hampton ’99 story about “Stanky Danky””

I look forward to that day.

  13. poop goblin Says:

We would chase Back at the Chicken Shack

just cuz we thought we were hip for being Jimmy Smith fans

doesn’t do the original justice though. they’d always do pretty weak runs through it.

  14. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

the 19th is from Denver (I am 99% sure it is the last show in the fileset). working through the acoustic set right now as I do some school work on the mba. pretty nice background set for me right now:

    Velvet Cheese (I skip)
    Billy Breathes
    You’ll Know My Name

electric set ain’t no slouch either…

  15. poop goblin Says:

99 was the year I was getting a little sketch myself

by Cypress full criminal us vs them mode

  16. poop goblin Says:

been listening to early 80’s Phish. have no idea why

huge bust out would be Lou Reed Wild Child

comes up a few times in these early shows I’m spinning. think they are pre page shows

  17. mitch Says:

how about an article on how Phish needs to be voted a state, so we can pass medical marijuana laws

^why didnt we think of this before. i like where your heads at butter.

  18. butter Says:

when Miner was writing that article on ballads, i was still convinced i didn’t care about Hampton or Phish’s return

thought i was done, over it, adult raising a child, Phish was in my past, i was left with a bad taste in my mouth after 2.0 and the fake ending festival, blah blah

Instead of Phish’s comeback at Hampton, i went boar hunting in Texas

the morning after night one i checked the setlist and freaked out
and bigjig called to confirm and said “get your ass out here, i gotta ticket for third night for ya”

so long story short i traveled all night (night 2) and showed up at Hampton with my cooler full of boar meat, ready to start up my 3.0

  19. Gavinsdad Says:

Hell yeah I had that Jimmy Smith cd for years by then…I just thought it was tamely performed…not trying to slide into hatr mode but don’t get me started on CTB…

@poop – I moved more of my meager vinyl collection up to the front roo
Where the turntable is and uncovered two awesome implulse Coltrane repressings still in the wrap.

ballads and w/ Johnny hartmann. Good stuff for breakfast with the kiddos music hour.

Also found 2 sick UK rare funk comps on Cobalt

  20. Mr. Palmer Says:

T3. Spin the tune” Andre the Giant” when you see it. It is Summer of ’89. Same exact basic song. The TAB version has no lyrics. Just instrumental and it has a nice jam as well.

I just want someone else to confirm so i don’t think i’m going crazy.

  21. mitch Says:

haha, least you realized and made it out. dwd > -7

  22. Jtran Says:

Still jealous of my friend for getting 2 tickets to all 3 nights in Hampton through the lottery. One entry.

    Awesome story butter

  23. Gavinsdad Says:

Great story @Butter. I totally Remember you posting about boar hunting. Don’t remember the other part. Few other people I’ve talked to got their heads twisted at the Gorge and are fully engaged in 3.0

  24. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

yeah, that song is on seis de mayo. first track I think. I hear what you are saying. what show is it in? i’ll spin it now before hitting the electric set of 5.19.99

  25. Mr. Palmer Says:

t3- Btw, Andre the Giant is on 5/4/99 set II about halfway though.
