Ten Tunes For Friday: Summer ’97

Summer 1997 (S.Nissman)

With summer on our minds this week with the announcement of Summer 20011 Leg I, this Friday we focus on Summer tour from fourteen years ago—1997. Phish had just returned from Europe, where they funked out every song imaginable, beginning to hone their new playing style. When the pulled into Virginia Beach on July 21 to kick off their US tour, they were a well-oiled groove machine that was ready for business. Here are some of my favorites selections from a transformative summer tour that criss-crossed the nation.

Down with Disease > Mike’s > Simple” 7.22

One of the most adventurous jam sequences of the summer from Walnut Creek, with, arguably, the best segue ever executed in band history.

Run Like An Antelope” 7.29 II

A fierce rendition from Desert Sky in Phoenix.

Cities > GTBT”  8.10 II

The Cornfields

My favorite jam of the summer when tour ended, and still right up there with the best of the best of Summer ’97.

Gumbo” 8.13 I

This is, perhaps, the most liquid “Gumbo” ever played, including some of the danciest music of the summer and a legitimate nod to “Franklin’s Tower” towards the end of the jam. My personal favorite, I don’t think any version even approaches this one.

Harry Hood > jam” 8.14 II

Darien Lake

This version from Darien Lake gets my vote for the “Hood” of Summer ’97—and there were more than a few gems. And that is not even considering the sublime jam that oozed from the song’s peak; some of the most intricate interplay you’ll ever hear.

Wolfman’s > Simple 8.16 II

One of the defining jam sequences of the Great Went.

Tweezer” 8.17 I

One of only two “Tweezers” in a massive US tour (the other came at The Gorge), this version dropped on the final day of tour in the Great Went’s afternoon set.

    @ Palmer

You guys will be good, especially the next year or two, but I think the Bulls may be the best “Team” in the Eastern Conference.
    That game last night!!!!
After coming out so flat and behind as Miami is running up and down during the first half.

    D. Rose is a man and a true candidate/in the running for league MVP

  2. EL Duderino Says:

    i love this kid’s attitude!

  3. Mr. Palmer Says:

Love D. Rose. He’s sick. I remember watching youtube videos of him in high school and thinking that he would be the next great. I’lk be pulling for the bulls against everyone except the knicks.

Knicks are a a year or so away. Need a big and a younger PG. ( Chris Paul). Then, watch out.

  4. snowbank Says:

On a lighter subject, why can’t we just kill gaddafi? He is clearly dick and has broken plenty of international laws?

  5. Mr. Palmer Says:

    so was Saddam.

  6. voopa Says:

sumo- my source for Trey Bonnaroo ’02 is this one.

    FOB B+K 4011 (7′ stand, 45′ from stage)

I can seed it if no one else is. Simpsons rerun time.

  7. Mr. Palmer Says:

Question… If these uprisings in the middle east all take hold and these oligarchies turn to democracies in years to come, does history paint a different picture of GW? Its possible that in 20 years, the guy looks like a crusading genius? imagine that?

  8. Mr. Palmer Says:

ftr- i’m not making an argument for this ^^^. just something that popped into my mind. Food for thought.

    @Mr. P

I’m thinking history looks back with even less positive view. Did all this democracy come about by us invading these countries? No. Are the countries we did invade currently stable, functioning bastions of democracy and freedom? Definitely not.

Seems to me the Middle East is showing right now that it’s completely capable of finding freedom on its own, if that is, in fact, what ends up happening, which is of course what we all hope.

  11. Corey Says:

^Idioteque’s from 4.28.01 Canal Studios, ult. from the deluxe Kid A set.

  12. EL Duderino Says:

Well Palmer, that was their hope… I hope it works out to a modern society advantage.

  13. fat bastard Says:

lovin the 97 jams today thanks miner. i esp love the first segment DWD>MIKES>SIMPLE. that simple jam is as good as it gets. peace.

  14. Mr. Palmer Says:

good point garret. could go both ways maybe. Could the removal of Saddam and his regime been the spark that lit the rest of the middle east to pursue democracy? I guess the rest of the story has to be written to know the real answer. I will certainly be interesting to look back in 20 years and see what has transpired.

  15. EL Duderino Says:

    Tonights Menu:

    Linguini with white clams/sauce
    sautéed spinach
    homemade garlic-bread
    Two Hearted Ale

    = Priceless

  16. EL Duderino Says:

Bush should be looked down upon for bankrupting the U.S. IMO.

  17. Corey Says:

    ^At least.

  18. Cable Hogue Says:

Richard Thompson can rip a solo acoustic set like none other.

  19. sumodie Says:

@voopa: I know nothing about how to create an etree seed -if it’s not too annoying to create one I’d love to get that source from you, at your convenience

  20. ThePigSong Says:

how do I actually grab the torrent off of that page @voopa?

  21. ThePigSong Says:

    ^oh, I’m with sumo

  22. sumodie Says:

@pigsong: if/when voopa can graciously re-seed that Roo show, I’ll be sure to shop it around -you won’t miss out

Spun 8.2.03 IT set 3 today: Rock and Roll > Seven Below > Scents and Subtle Sounds > Spread It Round, Bug

some mighty fine loose festi playing right there

  23. Mr. Palmer Says:

Will Bethel be the toughest ticket in Leg1? Any consensus? Will any shows be a tough ticket. Figuring out my PTBM strategy this weekend.

  24. ThePigSong Says:

I’m probably only hitting ATL, and I’m waiting to press my luck on during the onsale.

  25. sumodie Says:

@mrP: I recall Bethel’s lawn to be a sweet spot (’06 Phil/GRAB show) so I’m gonna put in for that weekend and not worry about what I get

I’m also planning on Great Woods & Darien, and maybe Holmdel, but I’ll likely wait for the public onsales. G is directing a local opera production so I’ll be rolling solo for these shows, don’t expect a single Pav tic to be an issue

How is Holmdel’s lawn? From what I remember in ’99 it was fine…

BTW, I didn’t know till after but at that ’06 Bethel show Phil played the exact same setlist as the GD did at Woodstock (almost done dling that Phil show from the ‘noid)
