Night Speaks to a Woman

Reader Review: TAB @ AE Stage, Pittsburgh, PA: Casey Boire

2.25.11 - Pittsburgh (M.Stein)

Nestled in the shadow of Pittsburgh’s Three-Rivers Stadium, Trey and his Classic TAB line-up rolled into Stage AE on Friday night and laid down an impressive show that was arguably the best of the tour so far. Upon walking in around the scheduled show time, I was surprised to see the place packed from wall to wall considering that it was one of the few shows to not sell out beforehand. Trey came onstage around 8:30 pm and opened his acoustic set with Backwards Down the Number Line. Everyone was in good spirits and as Trey sang the final part of the song, the crowd joined in by providing the backing lyrics of “All my friends, Backwards Down The Number Line.” The sing-along continued throughout the first set and included well-played versions of Gumbo, Farmhouse, Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan, and The Horse > Silent in the Morning…Read On Here!

I can’t bust on anyone for having an accent. I didn’t realize it until I started travelling a lot, but apparently I sound Canadian. Makes sense due to the fact that I live 10 minutes from the Canadian border, but I never thought the influence was that great. I might drop an occasional eh, but I defintely don’t say aboot.

Caught most of Sheens interview w/ Piers Morgan last night. I must say, it was probably the most interesting TV i’ve watched in a long time. Crazy fuck.

@hhood: great write-up, thanks for pulling that together!

    huh? you’re not Canadian? 😉

  4. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    Mornin folks

Cool write up HH glad to read your review

I thought any town 10 minutes from the Canadian border is Canadian by default?

By the way you aren’t from Ogdensburg are you? If so I need to ask you a ? off topic.

I enjoyed your brief tales in the comments section of the winter 97 tour. What lasting memories.

  7. Jtran Says:

Thanks for the thoughts HH! Well written and enjoyable read.

Moving onwards in fall 95 this morning. 10/25/95. Looks like a big Mike’s in set II.

@T3: thanks for the 10-17-08 TAB link. I’m still not sure if I caught that show or the next night in Albany, but I did roll on Burlington, Providence, and Boston

That TAB tour showed me that 3.0 Phish would be the real deal -good ole Big Red was unleashed during shows!

Canadians make me think of hockey. GOOO Sabres beat those Rangers tonight!!!

  11. HarryHood Says:

    @ Halcyon

I’m not from Odgensburg, but I went to College in the next town over. One of my good friends at the time was from there so I spent some time in town. So, fire away, I might be able to answer your question or at least know someone who can.

HH&LW- there are some truly amazing Yinzerisms. For starters, we beat the Warshington Redskins or warsh our car. The roads in the winter get rul slippy. You need to eat a chip-chopped ham sandwich if you get rul hungry, an’ ‘at. Of course dan-tan is where the Stiller’s play, at Heinz Filled.

One of the best is a totally invented word: nebby. That rul nebby girl keeps poking hear head into my business.

  13. HarryHood Says:

HH <3's Bell's Two-Hearted Ale. Damn that BTB and his local brew suggestions. Always getting me hooked on beers that I can't get in the frozen tundra of New England……..

I have been trying to reconnect with an old friend who lives in that area. Quite a few friends and I have tried on and off throughout the years to get a hold of him. What is your email address?

  15. lastwaltzer Says:

the girl is always saying ‘nebby’

I remember that show like it was yesterday. The Light started with this cool little ambient intro then rocketed to greatness. First time I heard that one.
I recall the Money Love, Burlap and Ice and Snow getting the treatment that night.
What a great place for a TAB Show. I am so pissed they skipped Oakdale this year.
In 2008 we were all so excited just to hear the tones of that guitar. 2009 was right around the corner and the place was a buzz!

  17. lastwaltzer Says:

So when do ya’ll think we get leg two dates? Week following public onsale of leg one or will they make us wait even longer?

  18. HarryHood Says:

    @ Hal

Hit me up at and I’ll see if I can help you out. It’s a small town, so if he in the 25-35 age group, my buddy probably knows him.

  19. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

yeah, we caught this one and the Orpheum show on that Northern Exposure tour. Good stuff. I’d never been to Oakdale before. Love that venue!

  20. HarryHood Says:

    @ Hal

Forgot to mention that I’ve got to run out for a bit, so I may not get a chance to look into it until tonight/tomorrow.

  21. Jtran Says:

Big Reba to open set II of 10/25/95

  22. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

me too. Light was a baby back then, having only been played in Brooklyn the previous summer. oh, how she’s grown since then!

  23. angryjoggerz Says:

So much great new music out there right now, I love spring.

  24. lastwaltzer Says:

care to share just what this new music is?

  25. Robear Says:

hey all. been on the road the last week. don’t envy you frequent travelers! glad to be home.

listened to the TAB show from Bonnaroo 2002 a couple times. Wow. Forgot how good that was. That was my first TAB show. I wore out the discs I got shortly after, until they all skipped.

You can really hear the cruncy, growler tone that became the Phish 2.0 sound. So much diversity in the jamming and playing. Almost had a Miles Davis early 70’s kind of sound to my ears. I know that’s a stretch, but that’s all I got.
