TTFF: The Comeback Year

10.30.09 (G. Lucas)

Tweezer > Light” 12.5 II

On of the most impressive jam sequences of Fall ’09 with one of the darkest and most abstract “Lights” the band had dropped to that point.

Wolfman’s > Piper > Joy” 10.30 II

10.30.09 (W.Rogell)

A dark-horse segement of 10.30.09 that may includes the most creative jamming of Indio.

Rock and Roll” 8.8 II

While the first night of The Gorge proved most magical, this jam from night two is, arguably, the most impressive of both.

Back On the Train” 12.30 II

12.29.09 (W.Rogell)

Amidst a song-driven show, Phish blew out an unsustpecting, mid-second set “Back On the Train,” and crafted one of the jams of the year in the process.

46 Days” 11.18 I

The dirtiest funk jam of Fall tour came in the first set of all.

Stash” 7.30 I

Red Rocks (G.Lucas)

This “Stash” from Red Rocks opening frame set the stage for a transformative weekend in Colorado.

Disease > Twenty Years Later” 11.24 II

One of the year’s most creative jaunts sprouted from this mid-set “Disease” in Philly’s first show.

Split Open and Melt” 11.21 II

This first-set “Split” in Cincy upped the bar for the song in the 3.0 era.

I just heard this sonnet and thought it went deep. Maybe some here might agree, and relate…..

“Let This Darkness Be a Bell Tower” by Rainer Maria

Quiet friend who has come so far,
feel how your breathing makes more space around you.
Let this darkness be a bell tower
and you the bell. As you ring,

what batters you becomes your strength.
Move back and forth into the change.
What is it like, such intensity of pain?
If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine.

    In this uncontainable night,
be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses,
    the meaning discovered there.

And if the world has ceased to hear you,
say to the silent earth: I flow.
To the rushing water, speak: I am.

    Sonnets to Orpheus II, 29

Here is another poem from this past weeks podcast I was listening to. <a href="<On Being

You are not surprised at the force of the storm —
    you have seen it growing.
    The trees flee. Their flight
sets the boulevards streaming. And you know:
he whom they flee is the one
you move toward. All your senses
sing him, as you stand at the window.

The weeks stood still in summer.
The trees’ blood rose. And now you feel
    it wants to sink back
into the source of everything. You thought
    you could trust that power
    when you plucked the fruit;
now it becomes a riddle again,
    and you again a stranger.

Summer was like your house: you knew
    where each thing stood.
Now you must go out into your heart
as onto a vast plain. Now
    the immense loneliness begins.
The days go numb, the wind
sucks the world from your senses like withered leaves.

Through the empty branches the sky remains.
    It is what you have.
    Be earth now, and evensong.
Be the ground lying under that sky.
Be modest now, like a thing
    ripened until it is real,
so that he who began it all
can feel you when he reaches for you.
