Dates, Please?

The Gorge? (Graham Lucas)

As we prepare to turn the calendar to April, only four months stand between us and the alleged start of Phish’s second leg of Summer Tour. Trey and Mike have both completed their solo runs, June’s on-sales have come and gone, and yet still we have no dates confirmed for August. At this point, the delayed announcement, first rumored for last Tuesday and then for yesterday, has turned into a situation for more than a few puzzled fans. An older fan base who, collectively, has more life commitments than ever before needs more than a few months to plan its summer vacations, and with the lack of any definite dates for August, many people are being left in limbo.

Superball 9?

On the very same token, there has still been no news about Watkins Glen. Except for the hacker-discovered (assumed) title of the festival—Superball 9—there has been no information announced regarding the details—or the confirmation of–the event. If, indeed, the Watkins Glen fest is to take place on July 4th weekend, that is only three months away. Though far fewer people will have to take vacation days to hit up the holiday-weekend fiesta, planning needs to be done, plane tickets purchased, RVs rented (if they haven’t been already), among other things. After posting the lyrics to “Contact” on his race track’s website, Michael Printup, better known to the Phish community as @theglenprez, has been surprisingly silent, while last week he seemed as giddy to announce the festival last week as a middle-schooler who just had felt breasts for the first time and couldn’t wait to tell his friends. To quote a question Cliff Clavin posed repetitively in his one-time stand-up routine—“What’s up with that?” At this point, one has to believe there is a reason for the delay, but what is it? You’re guess is as good as mine.

UIC? (Pollock)

One rumor about the delayed announcement of any further Phish shows is that management wants to first see more ticket sales for June’s East Coast shows. Let me be of help here: if you want East Coast Phish shows to sell out faster, or at all, play less shows! Sure that sounds like the last thing you would ever hear me say, but from a business perspective, if that is really the problem, then why supersaturate the Northeast with concerts? Some things I will never understand.

Nonetheless, we can guess and second-guess as to why things haven’t been announced yet, but until the dates drop, that is all we can do. Sorry for the lack of real hard facts here, but there is nothing to go on at this point except rumors. And speaking of rumors, wouldn’t it be great if the one saying Phish will play three nights at UIC Pavilion in Chicago, instead of Deer Creek and Alpine, came true? It has gained steam in the past weeks, but until we hear officially, we’ll just keep guessing and making tentative plans with refundable deposits and courtesy holds all across the nation.

Throw us a bone…drop the dates already.

    “music that isn’t quite as good as it used to be.” -joe

    maybe not quite, but it’s pretty fackin’ hot, no?

    think back on these last two years and tell me some smokin’ hot shit has not been thrown down!

  2. garretc Says:

    @joe

    No, because we could have nicer weather, cooler women, better herbs, AND venues that middle age hippy crackers like to play music at…

    Never enough!

  3. joe Says:

    I was trying to make our left coast friends feel better phoam. I’m not really one to compare or look back longingly at the old days

  4. phoammhead Says:

    right on, joe. i’m 3 pinots and 3 ipas to the wind. don’t mind me. carry on . . .

  5. butter Says:

    I guess I’m having a hard time understanding the push for them to play UIC pavilion as oppose to DC and Alpine. Obviously UIC would be more of an intimate experience but this is SUMMER tour people. Part of the charm is enjoying the show in the great outdoors. Plus UIC would likely be a hard ticket…

  8. garretc Says:

    @phunklounge

    I’m not one of those making that push, as I won’t be hitting DC, Alpine, OR UIC, but I’d imagine many of the people making that push are gonna be hitting a lot more than just the UIC run, so they’ll get their fill of outdoor venues and all that.

    Plus, indoor Phish kicks outdoor Phish’s ass, which is saying a lot cause outdoor Phish is pretty awesome!

  9. phunklounge Says:

    Enough east coast already

  10. phoammhead Says:

    cheers, bb, this is a great place! i think we are dialing it in rather nicely. i think MrMiner will be proud = some breakthroughs, today. peace and goodnite.

  11. phunklounge Says:

    @garretc

    I disagree. I think the vast majority of “settled-down” upper mid west folks are pretty much looking to do the run around the IL-WI-IN run. I think it would be huge mistake abandon 2 of their favorite (and biggest moneymaking) sheds to play just to play 3 indoor shows in Chicago. Now if they did somehing like UIC > Alpine > UIC that would make a whole lot more sense…..

  12. phoammhead Says:

    ^never enough, phunlounge

    but yes, more west coast love.

    g’night.

  13. phunklounge Says:

    Allow me to rephrase that last statement:
    UIC -> Alpine -> DC that is.. HH killed me today.

  14. garretc Says:

    @phunk

    You’ll get no disagreement from me on any of those points, I just wanted to point out that the folks on this board pushing for UIC might have interests counter to that of the “average” fan. The diehards (i.e. the folks on this board) have mostly hit DC and Alpine before, don’t want to deal with the hassles involved in getting to the two venues, would like something a little smaller and more intimate, and will be hitting other shed shows to get their outdoor fix.

    I don’t have an opinion either way, cause like I said I won’t be hitting any midwest shows, nor have I been to any of these places yet, but from my time here on the board I feel like I’ve picked up on the motivations and mindsets of many of these folks…

  15. phoammhead Says:

    UIC is not gonna happen . . .

    i think . . . thanks to aw, the UIC rumor gets the most played and biggest hyped rumor of them all

    well played, aw 😉

    Evening Folks

    Truly happy for all you Northeasterners and your plethora of show options. Hope to catch a show this summer somewhere. If not, well I have a show or two to fall back on, and will plan my summer without Phish. I do not like the sound of that sentence, but whatevs.

  17. phoammhead Says:

    *most hyped rumor that will not happen!

  18. phunklounge Says:

    @garretc

    Good points.

    That said, one more thing I’d like to call out: The band released a DVD from the Alpine show last year — with that in mind I would find it a bit odd if they didn’t return there given the legacy and tradition there. The band seems to enjoy the place and have played some legendary concerts despite the size and lack of acoustics.

    I guess my point is I feel there are better places to play in the midwest than UIC. As the only venue in the upper midwest a 7K indoor venue in the middle of summer would seem like an odd choice.

  19. garretc Says:

    @phunk

    But really, the midwest, who cares! They’ve had their 3.0 fun! Just scrap them all together and add some more west coast dates instead…

  20. phunklounge Says:

    @garretc

    Here, here. I could do another Ghost at the Gorge. Or how about that Sneaking Sally?

  21. thedayman Says:

    cant wait for my first phest, gonna be a swell time no doubt.

  22. bigjig Says:

    I’m going to apologize for my hate before hand, but really, all you have is announced is Superball 9? Fuck off! Everybody already knew about that because of that twat the glennprez. I am at the point where I really fuckin hate who ever is in charge of Phish’s scheduling. Fuck You! I have spent the last seventeen years of my life spending all of my summer free time (when you are not on hiatus,whole other diatribe) doing every thing I can to enjoy to see this band live. Instead of rewarding loyal fans with some insight (how about a real phan club that gave us some REAL info), you play these fuckin games that your management leads you to believe will help you sell more fuckin tickets. FICTION. Yes I want West Coast Dates but any schedule will fuckin do.Stupid. Fact.
    It was all fine and dandy when I was younger and I could escape life for months at a time and follow the band come high or hell water. I hate to be that guy, but fuck, what about some customer service. I know plenty of pholks like myself who have spend tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars,(tickets, suites, hotel rooms, WATERWHEEL DONATIONS, merchandise, TURNING OTHER PEOPLE ON, and generally SUPPORTING WHOEVER PHISH TOLD US TO) who are already fuckin over it. We have lives outside of Phish(something the fucking band is so adamant about as well).
    Oh wait , their fans are just a bunch of hippies with no lives so who cares! I swear that is MGMT’s attitude. Fuck off Red Light. Sorry too angry to coherently express my thoughts.

  23. butter Says:

    double fact.

  24. phoammhead Says:

    @bigjig

    take a deep breath . . . relax . . . it’s gonna be okay. phish are thowin’ a festy! celebrate, even if you can’t make it. make it more special and a bigger celebration for those who can make it!

  25. phoammhead Says:

    ^you, too, butter. just sayin.
