The Gorge Sound: 1.0
I’ve always said that Phish both plays and sounds different at The Gorge. With nothing containing their sound, the tempo of their music slows down as the notes take time to boom over the crowd; and this dynamic creates a unique tempo and sound for Phish music. The results are patient, wide-open jams whose sound is simply not replicated anywhere on the planet. As we are heading back to this stunning locale in August for two more shows, let’s look at some jams from Phish’s first era that define their “Gorge Sound.”

“Disease -> Tweezer -> Disease” 8.2.97 II
The funk-laced and bass-led “Diseezer” highlighted Phish’s first show ever at The Gorge.

“Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 I
A funked-out, laid back rendition of “Reba” was played to the sunset and fused the Summer ’98 sound with The Gorge sound.

“Tube” 7.16.98 II
This wide-open version from late in the second set typifies the open-air Gorge sound.

“Gumbo” 7.17.98 I
This slowed down version on a hot afternoon matched The Gorge’s vast surroundings.
[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/1-03-Gumbo.mp3]***
A quintessential nugget of Gorge history.

“Wolfman’s -> Sand” 9.11.99 II
Wolfman’s molasses funk morphed into the first-ever Phish version of “Sand;” a big-time experience.

“Harry Hood” 9.11.99 II
A beautiful version from ’99 in a long lineage of gorgeous Gorge “Hoods.”

there is alot of talk over the years about trey not having much “soul” in my non bb quarters. i have to say he displays quite a bit of it in the gorge 98 gumbo. he’s clearly feeling it.
this is my quiet listening hour: holy gorge hood.
great picks miner, as always.
The uic and gorge jam r on my ipod and been playin it all nite 4 my brahs @ the ski haus. So sick. What up BB!
confession: Even though I had been to some amazing Phish shows before gorge ’99, those shows made me fall head over heels for this band. I only wish that I had realized sooner.
Confession. Seein the band since 94. Always steady, but I fell off for awhile after 99. Got way into indie rock after multiple times abroad as well as multiple stretches of wsp. . Went 2 phish shows 99 on, but this was due to tradition with good buds. Missed some great shows during this time. That’s why 3.0 has been so huge for me. I’m back in. Big time.
Once upon a time Metallica knew the deal when they sang, “life’s for my own to live my own way!!”
After And Justice Metallica was over. The cancer of Jason Newstead and sobriety had kicked in hard. Just like Sampson Metallica cut their hair and then they were weak. Save us Cliff and jam a little more Trey.
oh man just got home from seeing cornmeal at the vogue, woo hoo that was fun, i forgot how much i love lil hippie chicks, sweet ratio there too, i thought at one point they were playing dark star for sure, they werent.but benny and the jets for encore: too cool for school, great night at the broad ripple, if anyones interested
re:Harvey’s
That’s pretty crazy. Seems like if you can just get to Tahoe, no need for a ticket. You’d be able to find a viewpoint somewhere.
