The Gorge Sound: 1.0

The Gorge 8.7.09 (G.Lucas)

I’ve always said that Phish both plays and sounds different at The Gorge. With nothing containing their sound, the tempo of their music slows down as the notes take time to boom over the crowd; and this dynamic creates a unique tempo and sound for Phish music. The results are patient, wide-open jams whose sound is simply not replicated anywhere on the planet. As we are heading back to this stunning locale in August for two more shows, let’s look at some jams from Phish’s first era that define their “Gorge Sound.”

Disease -> Tweezer -> Disease” 8.2.97 II

The Gorge (G.Lucas)

The funk-laced and bass-led “Diseezer” highlighted Phish’s first show ever at The Gorge.

Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 I

A funked-out, laid back rendition of “Reba” was played to the sunset and fused the Summer ’98 sound with The Gorge sound.

Tube” 7.16.98 II

The Gorge (G.Lucas)

This wide-open version from late in the second set typifies the open-air Gorge sound.

Gumbo” 7.17.98 I

This slowed down version on a hot afternoon matched The Gorge’s vast surroundings.

2001 > Mike’s” 7.17.98 II

The Gorge (Rogell)

A quintessential nugget of Gorge history.

Wolfman’s -> Sand” 9.11.99 II

Wolfman’s molasses funk morphed into the first-ever Phish version of “Sand;” a big-time experience.

Harry Hood” 9.11.99 II

The Gorge (G.Lucas)

A beautiful version from ’99 in a long lineage of gorgeous Gorge “Hoods.”

    Good morning everyone.

@Miner thanks for the Gorge tunes. The 97 Hood is one of my favorites. #lightsout

And don’t forget, @SelectorJ is spinning the tunes this morning.

I was battling with this gorge vs tahoe situation and have been doing some serious flip-flopping…

I have a feeling the gorge will win. But mtn biking around tahoe really makes it a difficult decision. Maybe staying an extra day in WA might ease the biking concerns.

  3. Robear Says:

    top of the mornin’ all!

‘Some top ’09 Phish, no doubt. Those gorge shows dont seem to fit in with the rest of ’09 imo.’

    no doubt Foul_D.

the jamming stands out above 3.0 in general. Bring back the LJ! (long jam)

    no glass allowed at SBIX

what are some hetty beers that come in cans?

  5. Guyute711 Says:

I figured it might be no glass at the Ball. That will seriously hurt my idea of selling beers there.

  6. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

that’s not new. they were serious about the no glass thing at F8 too. I saw a dude get mason jars of medicali taken primarily because it was in glass. well, that and the fact he had brought about a QP for “personal use”.

it is becoming something of a movement in the craft beer industry.

  7. Robear Says:

    g-7, less drinking!

but really, tons of good beers in cans now. ‘Fat Tire’. get some for the brahlorado kids, that think it’s good beer. All the Desuchetes beers from ORegon in cans now too.

  8. voopa Says:

    Yea mon

  9. Guyute711 Says:

Less drinking? Me no understand. Gonna have to make sure my Captain is in a plastic bottle.

  10. voopa Says:

I found Fat Tire and Newcastle in cans for Festy 8.

  11. DukeOfLizards Says:

I can kangfirm that Brooklyn Brewery sells tall boys.

  12. voopa Says:

And we filled a half empty gallon jug of OJ w/vodka and stuck it in the cooler…they didn’t check it.

  13. Guyute711 Says:

My buddy got busted with a bottle of liquor at Fest 8. They asked if we had plastic cups and let us go.

  14. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

here is the full current database of canned craft beers available, according to

288 different beers from 110 breweries.

  15. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

oh wow, I didn’t know Whale’s Tale Pale was available in cans…

    ::runs to nantucket::

not quite the violent vibe of last week, eh? 😉
    “better must come” indeed

  16. Robear Says:

good start to the nHL playoffs, I might add.

  17. Kaveh Says:

@phHead: You can get New Belgium in cans, Ska Brewery in cans, and a lot of other great beers in cans. Plus you can also get a PBR, but you know me, I would roll with can’s of Colt 45…smooth baby, smooth.

  18. Kaveh Says:

    Thanks T3 for the list.

  19. Guyute711 Says:

Semin blasted that shot in OT. Lundqvist didn’t have a chance on that bullet.

  20. Kaveh Says:

@Selector J: throw something nasty at us for the online only after 9am.

  21. Kaveh Says:

@G711: Just watched highlights of that game. That shot in OT was sweet. Pretty one timer.

  22. nonoyolker Says:

Seque from Disease to Tweezer > WOO! Been a while since i’ve spun this one, $$$$. No HORSEing around on that transition

  23. st8 of mind Says:

Good start to the NHL playoffs indeed. Go Wings!

  24. Robear Says:

’99 the only year I made it to the Gorge. Had a really bad ownership / staff at the time. Full-on, hippie hating, backwoods douchebags. Kind of messed up the vibe of the place. Felt like I had left the west coast for Ohio or something. Would love to replace that memory with what sounds like a much approved situation.

  25. Spasm Waiter Says:

What’s up gangstas. Been all up in the cowphunk lately. Thanks for some tasties today miner.

    Pens 1-0 Yes mon.
