The Gorge Sound: 1.0

The Gorge 8.7.09 (G.Lucas)

I’ve always said that Phish both plays and sounds different at The Gorge. With nothing containing their sound, the tempo of their music slows down as the notes take time to boom over the crowd; and this dynamic creates a unique tempo and sound for Phish music. The results are patient, wide-open jams whose sound is simply not replicated anywhere on the planet. As we are heading back to this stunning locale in August for two more shows, let’s look at some jams from Phish’s first era that define their “Gorge Sound.”

Disease -> Tweezer -> Disease” 8.2.97 II

The Gorge (G.Lucas)

The funk-laced and bass-led “Diseezer” highlighted Phish’s first show ever at The Gorge.

Reba > Fast Enough” 7.16.98 I

A funked-out, laid back rendition of “Reba” was played to the sunset and fused the Summer ’98 sound with The Gorge sound.

A quintessential nugget of Gorge history.

Wolfman’s -> Sand” 9.11.99 II

Wolfman’s molasses funk morphed into the first-ever Phish version of “Sand;” a big-time experience.

    @Dr. P

Oh no, you’re being forced to stay in a luxurious hotel whilst seeing sick Phish shows! You poor thing!

  2. tela'smuff Says:

Dr. P – she’s telling you no, but go anyway. i set a precedent early on in my 10 year marriage. Besides loving her, I love Phish and live music, and nothing makes me happier. I work hard to provide, and am there for her 350 days a year. Give me 15 towards Phish. It’s worked so far, although I’m starting to get some pushback. Not sure our unwritten pact will hold up much longer.

been scouring the November 98 on bt.etree.org.

    stumbled upon this 11.11.98 tape:

    $$$ tape. slick ghost.

  4. Spike2518 Says:

    Saw it again 🙂

Dr P – here is the key, you have to make it clear that if she brings the kid and you stay in a nice hotel then it is a “joint” trip. It is no longer the trip that you are dragging the family along for but a mutually agreed trip.

If she pushes back, then remind her that the phish tickets are an equivalent cost to the hotel upgrade.

    And… nice work man.

  6. snowbank Says:

    women sure make life interesting.

  7. tela'smuff Says:

thanks garretc. i think i’ll wait until someone floats me a rec on a tight matrix or something.

for those going to Pitchfork Fest this summer, and/or, for those that grew up loving The Cure (like me), then I suggest you check out Wild Nothing. The debut was Gemini in 2009 and it’s a great laid back listen. It for sure has that dreamy indie vibe, but the nostalgic Cure sound. It’s in thy folder.

  8. garretc Says:

I don’t have a literal list of songs I really want to hear this summer, but if I did, Peaches En Regalia would be on it.

  9. tba Says:

There was a sick saw it again from the gorge one year right; i don’t remember the year, but if not mistaken it was a highlight of that gorge year.

Miner that you included the fast enough for you as well a the epic 2001 Mikes, the former only the hard cores i guess, the latter most, know as awesome gorgeness.

    thanks

So i’ve gone every Gorge. but doubt I can make this year, but Miner’s awesomen blogs has several months to get that OCD in me going :<)

ps 9/11/99 back in another century when freedom rang and the world was still sooooooo awesome

totally spaced that my roommate is a record dork. strolls into my room to tell me the 10 record stores hes hitting tomorrow and told me he will grab phish if he see’s it. very nice, i like.

  12. Mr. Palmer Says:

hmmm Spac ’04. haven’t heard that in a while. Going to 6.20 Waves. Then set II.

Rangers/Caps on the tube. green stank in the tube… friday night 🙂

  13. tela'smuff Says:

i have a close friend who runs the vinyl section at Shake It in Cincy (rated #15 best in USA) and he told me Phish is the single most inquired upon LP for RSD. I’ve also heard this from the dude in Boulder and from a record store in Denver. This will be my 2nd straight RSD and I anticipate that one will need to be waiting in line 2 hrs ahead of opening of doors to get a chance at the Phish LP.

    thus my preparation…

  14. Mr. Palmer Says:

    Tela’s or anyone else.

11.14.98 Crown in Cincy is up on bt. etree. Looks like a smoker. Any first hand accounts?

4.15.99 Phil and Phriends gets the Charlie Miller treatment.

  16. tela'smuff Says:

weird show for me. The standout moments include a naked girl at setbreak running up the aisles and getting hauled out. We got a So Lonely and Something, which were both pretty cool. That was my first Piper due to my mountain hiatus. That blew me away, and it wasn’t even a jammed version.

Cleveland the night before was better.

  17. Mr. Palmer Says:

Interesting Tela. Cleveland is up as well. I guess i’ll grab both.

You should def. give those Spac ’04 shows a run through. Maybe only redeeming things to come out of ’04. Night 1 Brooklyn was fun though.

  18. garretc Says:

    11/14/94 Bowie. Words fail me.

    Great jam.

  19. tela'smuff Says:

    Cleveland had a great Meat.

funny thing about summer ’04 is that i liked most of the shows from Summer ’04. Had a blast at DeerCreek (long story, very illicit), but that Tube will stay with me for a very long time.

Alpine ’04 Seven Below is maybe, to this day my favorite version.

Then, I had a blast dancing in a foot or standing rain to the Camden show that was simulcast at Coventry. Not sure I’ve heard that show since that night in the rain. At the time I LOVED that show.

  20. bigjig Says:

Telas-that was a guy streaking up and down the isles.fact. He ran a little too close to me

  21. tela'smuff Says:

you’ll notice my sentence construction, grammar, and spelling start to fail tonight as the Dale’s Pale Ale and banage takes hold. I’m finding the cabbage tonight.

  22. Dr. Pronoia Says:

thanks guys. feel great. lets see how it all develops…

  23. Jtran Says:

Coachella is streaming on youtube right now. Is it just me or do these bands kind of suck? I like reading the twitter comments from all the skinny jeans

  24. tela'smuff Says:

WHAT????? jig – what you’re telling me now is rewriting history. i’ve never heard that. i guess you’re sure, but, are you sure?

  25. Luther T. Justice Says:

At Cincinnati 98, as the naked girl was being hauled off, the band high fived her as they were going up the stairs to start the 2nd set. I remember it like it was yesterday. I also paid 98 cents for gas that night. Oh, the 90s!
