Woke Up This Morning…

"Makisupa Policeman" (Bruno)

On the ultimate stoner holiday, 4/20, let’s take a look at the band’s lone reggae song and herbal reference, “Makisupa Policeman.” This article was first posted a year ago today and I excerpted the intro below with a link to the entire piece.

Of all the musical genres in which Phish dabbles, reggae is, perhaps, the least significant. With mere passages of “Harry Hood” and “Slave” flirting with a roots-based groove, “Makisupa Policeman” is Phish’s lone original foray into the genre.  A relic from the band’s stonier days, “Makisupa” is actually the first known publicly played Phish original, making its debut on 10.23.84. Mentioning this fact in Philadelphia on 11.29.03, Trey also also noted that its lyrics were written by Tom Marshall as a kid. Though it was the “original Phish song,” the band’s homage to ganja has been somewhat of a rarity throughout their career. Always eliciting comedic cheers with Trey’s chosen “keyword,“ ”Makisupa” is Phish’s only musical reference to many fans’ recreational smoke. Usually highlighted by the creative dub lines of Gordon, this song has played multiple roles throughout Phish’s career….Read on!

    @ UB

    Really on DC1 set: I ???

i’m curious what you think is the worst set of 3.0

  2. Mr. Palmer Says:

Doing this show no spoilers style and this Mike’s has hit me like a ton of bricks. Halfway in ( 21 min total) and its about to get crazy in the second jam.. Is this like an epic Mike’s that i just don’t know? Wild

  3. Mike in Austin Says:

Damn. I forgot how solid this AC Sand is.

  4. EL Duderino Says:

    Bulls Win Bulls Win!!!!!

  5. EL Duderino Says:

  6. Mike in Austin Says:

No Spoiler is where it’s at.

  7. BrandonKayda Says:

I think I’m going to listen to some Summer 95 Phish tonight as well. RR Mike’s sounds good.

Man, Phish needs to really dig into this song again. I don’t like to see it pop up on sets anymore because it gets predictable. Atleast the Weekapaugs and the songs inbetween are nice

  8. EL Duderino Says:

I thought Mike wasn’t really into Mike’s anymore?

    if that makes any sense

  9. uncle ebenezer Says:

@ dude, see that’s the thing…i don’t listen for “worst of” or any bullshit like that. i’m a phan and a custie

  10. EL Duderino Says:

As a fan I have no problem calling a poor set a poor set. When we were there it was kinda disappointing. the tale of two sets for the southern crew.

like night and day between set: I & II

  11. Mr. Palmer Says:

Even though they don’t play it like they used to, it’s still one of a few songs that when Trey hit those first notes, that old feeling always rushes through you again. All is right in the universe. Awesome!

BK- i suggest this 12.1.95 Mikes> Week. trust me

  12. EL Duderino Says:

the Weekapaug from Hershey is THE HEAT…
you can hear/feel the locomotive barreling down the track IMO.

  13. BrandonKayda Says:

That Mike’s is incredible, I know. And then they play Weekapaug in F instead of D, so they have trouble singing so high lol.

  14. uncle ebenezer Says:

i remember really liking the roggae, ctb, wolfman’s, and the end off tte especially…really fun to be back there for that show after three nights at the greek the week before

if i had any complaints about anything, it’d be the train song and mango from the following night. i especially liked the buildup out of wilson into possum, meatstick was fun, fluff seemed like trey kicking down for botching the mango but it was still welcome with open arms (and they fuckin nailed it). called the contact encore and the slave was just the icing on the cake

Mike’s at RR 95 was/is a sweet jam. Always a special place in my hear being my 4th show. Love it up BK. Its a special one.

Had a great time talking Phish and all things life with Kaveh tonight over a few beers. I don’t comment here much but everyone of you all that I have met are cooler then….cool. Keep up the good work BB. Much love.

  16. BrandonKayda Says:

    8.1.09 Mound is nice.

  17. uncle ebenezer Says:

just a fun couple nights all in all, never forget the heat those two days…

couple hometown shows that set me straight before getting my wig split the next night at alpine

  18. Cable Hogue Says:

I think the highlights of 10/29/10 were pretty great. Nobody’s mentioned the Slave either, which was real good, but I guess that’s par for the course for Slave lately.

Love the composed-sounding jam at the end of Sand….pretty much the best open jamming of the weekend was in that Sand>Carini…

Been spinning the 7/31/99 release…sounds great, incredible 2001>Bowie.

  19. EL Duderino Says:

    the weather was oppressive!!!!

    absolutely miserable

  20. lastwaltzer Says:

  22. BrandonKayda Says:

Spinning Gorge Gin from 8/7 – how did they pull this out in 2009? Nothing before or after topped this. I hope we get this kind of thing this summer…more often at least.

  23. BrandonKayda Says:

^ talking about summer 2009, when I said nothing before or after topped it

  24. Mr. Palmer Says:

Fishman doing Suspicious Minds. So great.

  25. AintNoTele Says:

Gorge R&R is $$$$ too, those 2 shows pretty much own everything. R&R has a great little funky hight octave section that I was rocking pretty hard yesterday. I found the SBD in my car while house hunting and was really surprised at how well those shows stand up and even surpass some of ’10.

There was a lot of greats in ’09 taboot that should not be overlooked.
