TTFF: Ten From ’10

12.31.2010 (Ryan Gilbertie)

With only two weeks separating us from the kick-off of Phish’s massive Summer 2011, let’s take a moment to revisit some of last year’s finest moments, in no particular order. For anyone who thinks Phish doesn’t jam anymore, take a run through this playlist…enjoy….

2001 > David Bowie” 10.30 II

10.30.10 (D.Lavery)

The smoking conclusion—and finest segment—of a wild, pre-Halloween night.

Reba” 10.19 E

The divine creation that came out of nowhere in Augusta’s encore.

Ghost” 12.31 II

12.30.10 G.Lucas)

The Holy “Ghost.”

Seven Below -> What’s the Use?” 12.27 II

A delicate, introspective journey from Worcester’s snow-covered opening night.

Rock and Roll -> Carini” 10.22 II

10.23.10 (R. Gilbertie)

Providence’s exploratory set-opening combo; from an avant-garde “Rock and Roll” into a blissful “Carini.”

Light” 8.7. II

The band’s magnum opus from the Greek—one of the year’s improvisational peaks.

Harry Hood” 12.28 II

12.30.2010 (G.Lucas)

An impeccable, four-part musical conversation that, in my opinion, represents musical perfection.

Backwards Down the Number Line” 6.12 II

One of very few jams from June’s tour with staying power. Phish came together in an instant amidst a noodly jam and crafted a soundtrack for secret-agent.

Simple” 8.6 II

8.5.10 (W. Rogell)

One of the most engaging jams from, arguably, the most creative three-night stand of the year at the Greek.

Disease -> What’s the Use?” 8.14 II

Face melting rock and roll morphs into sublime territory, landing perfectly in “What’s the Use?.”

Found a great bar down the street about a 5 min bike ride from me. Pub and grub. If we have another BB meetup for BK bowl this play will work.

  3. phoammhead Says:

bek and i just made risotto . . . expensive and labor intensive, but soooo worth it!

  4. thedayman Says:

no prob ly/frycan, such a perfect analogy for their playing mang.

in the spirit of summer, i went thru some of miner’s late summer ’10 highlights and boy was i floored. i know we talk about how great this band was in the fall, but man did summer smoke too. the bdtnl from jones beach really grabbed me, but the biggest dark horse of them all was the telly piper.

i dunno if people have spun this one in a while, but i think its an all timer, imo. the boys seriously explore a million different avenues in such a short amount of time, not to mention the blissed out ambient outro that is just pure $$$. the definition of musical density.

here’s the vimeo video, great vid, great piper:

    have a good one bb!

  5. Frycanthropist Says:

    emmm i love risotto..

it is indeed a intensive process, but very rewarding indeed.

  6. cal Says:

Dayman–I agree 100% on the Telly “Piper”. I remember listening to the nospoilers of that show and thinking THAT is another piece of the puzzle back in place. Sure, I prefer a nice long, slow intro but as for that jam, perfection.

Possibly the first instance where I thought a 3.0 version of a 1.0 song might be an all-timer.

  7. thedayman Says:

definitely cal, i’m looking forward to more of the same this summer. summer 11 is gonna be great, especially when phish crushes my soul at UIC (bitches), and i’ll have till the nye run to pick up the pieces (insert winking smiley here, if i knew how).

Trending toward BK Bowl weds nite for RR as I’ll be up fOr work Weds afternoon.

Very nice and spiritual headstone unveiling today a year after my friend Michelles unfortunate death last Summer. They carved a dog, tortoise, hedgehog and rat into the side of the stone..a nod to her penchant for animals and animal rescue. Got my kids together with the kids from the Cape and upstate NY. Very nice gathering to pay tribute to a friend. The cantor played Morning Dew on the guitar at the cemetery. Heavy! Hug the ones you love and be grateful if you have a crew that’s there for you. Feeling the love today.

  9. BingosBrother Says:

That sounds really awesome GD. sounds like she was well known and well loved and thats really the ultimate goal. Ain’t no goodbyes, only next times.

Go Bulls. game is tight so far, but if this series goes 6 or 7 games, the Heat will be worn down to a nub.

  10. SillyWilly Says:

    good evening, kidz

been a whirlwind of the last 4 days. Finishing and finals and setting up shop in Kenosha

you guys should see me now. I moved in with 5 people I don’t know.

they’re all a World of Warcraft team, apparently, and were pretty bummed when I explained I probably wouldn’t be joining them on their adventures.

anyway, here, I am. the night before the rest of my life. I brought 4 shirts, 1 pair of pants, 1 tie, 5 pairs of underwear, 10 socks, tooth brush, deodorant, soap (I forgot shampoo, gonna have to do the ‘ol college “borrow”) my lap top, cell phone, a sleeping bag, and an air mattress.

my room is painted a light shade of purple

Im ready to publicly defend some people accused of crime.

  11. Dr. Pronoia Says:

^^ Good luck to you Serious Willy. Doing God’s work right there.

For some reason I think it’d be a reasonable goal to get those WoW guys into phish obsessiveness…

  12. BrandonKayda Says:

That’s awesome @Silly – best of luck to you as a lawyer.

  13. Fly Says:

Oh, Wow…2500+ hours of my life. Still think about it almost every day.

Evenin’ all. I know they played it at AV in ’09, but I want Malkenu at Bethel.

  14. Fly Says:

Er, WoW. Good luck Silly! You will pwn!

  15. Highway Bill Says:

    TMWSIY and all.

  16. Fly Says:

    Of course.

  17. tela'smuff Says:

i have a new favorite current NBA player, and his name is Taj Gibson. He had two of the nastiest dunks i’ve seen in a very very long time tonight.

  18. BingosBrother Says:

Taj Gibson just put the ! on that ass whooping! Da Bulls. How you like that Mr. C?

  19. BingosBrother Says:

Sickest, most emphatic, powerful dunk I’ve ever seen in my life telas. I’m still in shock over that.

  20. tela'smuff Says:

the one in the first half was reminiscent of the classic Tom Chambers dunk. I was freaking out. But the dunk to end the game was beyond description. Perfect timing and absolute authority!

i have been out of the NBA loop for a while, until this year a bit. I thought Lebron was supposed to be the best player in the NBA? he looked terrible, uninterested, lazy, and slow. The Bulls played like a team of destiny. I am continually impressed by Wade. Dude is silky. Steve Kerr pretty much dissed Bosh, but I thought he looked pretty good.

  21. SillyWilly Says:

thanks for the good luck everyone

    roommates seem like fun kids

except for the part when they told me “No drugs in our house”

i couldn’t figure out why they made a point of it…then i realized i had a phish shirt on

    got me.

    good night everyone!!

  22. Tzara's Ghost Says:

Good work, SeriousWilliam. Sounds like those Phish dates will be much needed breaks from geekdom. Well, those kind of geeks anyway.

  23. BrandonKayda Says:

    What’s up?

  24. thedayman Says:

wow i can’t believe they straight up said, “no drugs in our house” silly. that’s seriously whacked. dang. i guess they dont want you to taint them in case they get drug tested for the world of warcraft world cup.

  25. BingosBrother Says:

Cannabis is not a drug Silly. Just don’t bring any coffee or cigarettes in the house and you’ll be cool.
