“Venues of Summer Vol. I” & Utica Giveaway!

PNC Bank Arts Center - Holmdel, NJ

As Summer Tour is around the corner, and in the spirit of the new soundboard tracks from the archives that continue to trickle out from “Past Summer Tours,” I decided to combine a compilation of my own with a contest and giveaway. Here’s the deal: in the compilation linked below—”Miner’s Venues of Summer Vol. I”—you’ll find 12 tracks from the history of Leg One venues. Just drop folder into iTunes and the setlist of the compilation will pop-up. But here’s the catch, you won’t see the venues or dates of the selections. Your job is to come up with the correct venue and date for each selection, nothing too hard, and shoot me an email with the subject line “Summer Venue Contest.” All correct responses will be entered to win one of three brand spanking new copies of “Phish: Live In Utica” DVD/CD box set! All winning entries will be put into a hat and the three winners will be drawn at random. You may enter anytime until Sunday at 3pm pacific, and the winners will be announced on Monday! Send your entries to mrminer@phishthoughts.com (FYI: I didn’t get all techie and strip MP3 tags, but just drop the folder in iTunes and play by the honor code. The point is to get as many candidates as possible for the Utica drawing, not to trick anyone.)

Enjoy the Tunes!

Jam of the Day:

Halley’s -> Roses -> NO2” 7.13.99 I

Here’s a selection from Great Woods history that didn’t make the compilation, but is a retro-summer treat, nonetheless.

    I’m with selecta on the “planning”…to a degree but not that much…I’ll give on the wolfman’s scat thing, but to think that they discuss wether or not to rage a specific shows seems lime a shitty thing to do….”Let’s play our balls off tonight for this crowd and give a shitty show tomorrow”. That just doesn’t seem right.

  2. Selector J Says:

    Trey is constantly encouraging poor fan behavior.
    e.g. Catching glowsticks on stage –> entire band getting pelted w/ glow sticks for the rest of the show

  3. win butler Says:

    They seem to like to throw down in dumpy places like Camden or Utica. It’s their version of ‘Slumming it’. Like when the cute little cred-head jumps on tour with the sparkling VW bus. By mid tour she’s got two wooks with dogs and bugs in the ride. By tours end, retreat to the ‘burbs.

    I don’t think they say lets give em a shitty show tomorrow but I could see them being more in the mood one night then another which may lead to more risk taking, bringing something special out etc. Its like oh we’ll play good tonight and bad tomorrow.

  5. bhizzle Says:

    Good luck Palmer!

    when you bring in something like the greek light and the fact that they seem to be much more concise, ie “dense jamming”, it does go against the idea that some things like the greek light is not planned

  6. Mr. Palmer Says:

    going into 1/1, they knew exactly what songs were left on the table. It was night 5 of a 5 night run. Bowie being the one exception that was repeated. Plus, if you remember, Trey sounded sick as a dog in Worcester, so his health could also have been a factor on why the boys were primed to explode at the end of that run. Just feeling better overall.

  7. lastwaltzer Says:

    “Trey is constantly encouraging poor fan behavior.”selector

    TREY, TIME OUT! GO TO YOUR ROOM, YOUR BEHAVIOR IS ENTIRELY UNACCEPTABLE AND AND ITS UNREASONABLE.

  8. Guyute711 Says:

    bhizzle, I’ll be in the ROC tomorrow night until Monday. Don’t know if I’ll have a lot of time but maybe we can grab a beer or something.

  9. Selector J Says:

    “they drop something like the Greek Light, I’d be surprised if that wasn’t discussed”-lw

    I think you underestimate the power of the force whilst in the hands of 4 Jedi masters.

  10. albert walker Says:

    the lack of shows with no predetermination that just flow into total sickness is one of the things I feel 3.0 has lacked

    all my huge shows like Greek III, Alpine II, or MSG 1/1 I def felt like there was a plan to kill it when they walked on stage

    those shows that just randomly become sick do to the flow of the playing I think have become rare if not non existent this time around

    do feel this happened all the time back in the day

    hoping this changes this summer

  11. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    1.1 throwdown was a foregone conclusion. there was a lot left on the table, as palmer notes, trey was finally healthy, first time playing that date, etc. hell, they even said something like “a very special show” in promoting it beforehand, didn’t they?

    really glad willowed and I made the push to hit that one. wonderful night in the city with the crowdedness of NYE gone. might be the slowest day of the year in nyc.

  12. bhizzle Says:

    g711…I’ll shoot you an email (jmohr, right?). However, tomorrow night will not be good as I’m not sure I will be in any shape after the wisdom teeth get removed & the SLF is going to see Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte & Naughty By Nature so I have baby sitting duties as well. But if you are looking for something to do Little Feat is playing at the Lilac Festival Friday.

  13. sumodie Says:

    @palmer: knock ’em dead at the interview!

  14. lastwaltzer Says:

    @selctor

    could be, but if you listen closely to the back end of it I’m pretty sure you hear one of them play a theme and a few bars later they all suddenly hit that theme together. It doesn’t sound like they were listening it sounds like someone came in to early with a pre discussed theme.

    On the opposite end there is the broom light which you clearly hear mike bring in this thumping groove and abandon it only to have trey pick it up later after mike has already moved onto to something else, that seemed more spontaneous.

  15. willowed Says:

    1/1

    best show of 2011 by a mile

  16. Kaveh Says:

    @Miner: Thanks for the tunes…looking forward to them. The Jam of the Day is killer; if you don’t have it, grab @KP’s remaster of this; it is $$$$$. One of his best; in my opinion.

    @SelectorJ…time to tune in.

  17. Robear Says:

    Contest?

    Not. Entering.

  18. seif Says:

    its likely a combination of both pre and spantaneous. trey can create “the boogie-lope” without everyone else being “in” on it but other things need everyone in on it…the beauty of phish is that they make you feel like it is all spontaneous when it is happenning…and that’s a gift.

  19. KfL Says:

    all i know is i’m ready for some hot ass phish, bitches

    sedin sisters!!

  20. Guyute711 Says:

    shit what time do they go on bhizzle? And yes jmohr117 @ yahoo

  21. kenny powers Says:

    thanks Kaveh!

    did you know they leaked the NO2 (only) for this year’s past summer comp? i hate to bitch when they didn’t have to give us anything, but damn why not throw in the Roses taboot?!?

  22. albert walker Says:

    ftr I couldn’t give a shit if it is predetermined

    great example on the Greek Light LW

    there is def a moment where someone jumps into the theme early and then they hit it all in unison a few bars later

    fuck Vancouver. can’t watch that shit. damn I hate that fuckin hockey team.

  23. marcoesq Says:

    @Palmer

    Good luck!

  24. marcoesq Says:

    @KP

    I know, dont get me started. I feel like all of the releases could’ve been a little better, went off on this yesterday

    Camden Twist>Slave Should’ve easily been the Jiboo>Sawit Again>Magilla

    MPP Free>WTU? should’ve been the Mango>Jam>Free from ’00 or at least the Mike’s OR Twist that came later in that 99 set

    Who knows, maybe they’re saving them for something big

  25. Kaveh Says:

    @KP: Confirmed…that whole sequence is magical…I got to let that one rip today for sure.
