Pre-Ball Odds and Ends

6.10.11 (G.Lucas)

Trey In Rolling Stone: In a short but candid interview published in Rolling Stone yesterday, Trey mentioned that Phish will be working on a new album this winter, 2012 will be light on touring, and that he is considering covering Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” Read the whole piece here!

An interesting excerpt from Trey on the history of Phish festivals:

The festivals grew organically out of our early scene in Vermont. We were always a party band and we used to play outside a lot. People always seemed to show up. I remember a big pig roast at our friend Ian’s farm one summer – everyone came and slept in the field. We did a gig at our friend Amy’s farm in Maine and suddenly it was 5,000 people. Then we went to Plattsburgh and it was 50,000. You have to keep in mind, though, that there were no festivals to speak of when Phish was doing those early ones. I remember hearing about Burning Man, but even that was just getting going in the Nineties. Now there are tons, but it all felt very cutting edge in the mid-Nineties. There was no playbook. We were making it up as we went along.

Just checked that DC ’95 Reba…nice! Great Summer tempo, before they started racing each other in the Fall, nice patient sideways excursion, perfect build and peak.

  2. voopa Says:

Looks like I’ll being listening to nothing but prime cuts from now until the ball game. Hard to top.

Just got into work and reading back. Wanted to add the perspective of one of the “younger” folks and the challenges presented by SuperBallIX travel.

I know a lot of you pine for the days of less responsibility (i.e. no wife and kids), and I think the whole 4th of July = family time equation has something to do with low ticket sales.

Don’t understimate economic factors though. I’m 25 and jobs are scarce for people my age. The job I do have is almost minimum wage. I was making more money as a temp before earning my Master’s degree. So now I’m underemployed, strapped with student loan payments, and am living at home. I’d like to get out as soon as possible, obviously.

All this is making me think long and hard about making the trip, which I know will get fairly expensive (relative to my budget). Still not even sure it’s possible, but I just wanted to point out that a lot of us who constitute the “younger” generation of fans are in a pretty shitty situation in terms of finances.

  4. Guyute711 Says:

Ramblin, I am from the older generation and am unemployed. Things pretty much suck all the way around if you ask me. Fortunately for me I don’t have anything tying me down now so I am using the free time to see Phish as much as possible. It is happening.

  5. RamblinMind Says:

Granted, I don’t know a whole lot of people my age who are into Phish anyway, so maybe that’s the real problem.

Met some kids at Great Woods who just graduated from high school. One guy told me he just wanted to get “as stupid as possible.” I mentioned a lack of a Shakedown, and he asked me if Shakedown was nitrous. Then proceeded to tell me that just wants to find the tanks, bro. The tanks! One of them was throwing up in the lot two hours before showtime. Probably not Superball-level commitment there.

    Very true Ramblin.

  7. tela'smuff Says:

    good perspective Ramblin.

been a while since i heard how hard this Cilfford Ball Fluff rages. nice.

  8. RamblinMind Says:

word @G711, I didn’t mean to suggest the economy is any better for other folks. If you lost a job in the last 2-3 years it has probably been tough/impossible for you to find something, especially something paying at the level you would have found say 5 years ago.

Unless you’re a yuppie stock market genius like AW 😉

  9. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

  12. RamblinMind Says:

I was just screwing around @AW. Don’t imagine you as a yuppie.

I’m just looking to make enough to puff, see shows, and get my own apt. What else do you need?

  13. Robear Says:

They just built a straw bale house on ‘Bob the Builder’. Hope for the future.

  14. Robear Says:

AW rocks the same shorts he had from 2.0.

  15. RamblinMind Says:

Glen Close Camping area looks like you’re paying $170 more in order to be a little closer to the stage. Is there more to it than that?

  16. voopa Says:

“Glen Close Camping” Camping amenities include * 15×30 space * Free Showers * Flushable Toilets * Camping in field inside the track near the Concert Field * A separate entrance to both the Concert field and to the Festival Site.

  17. voopa Says:

    At F8 we had a 10′ X 10′ square behind the car.

  18. Tom Says:

Don’t you have the space in GA as well. I assume its smaler but are there any specific numbers out.

  19. RamblinMind Says:

same space in both. You get “flushable” as opposed to “portable” toilets with Glen Close

  20. Guyute711 Says:

Shit tents can be used in all camping areas.

  21. phoammhead Says:

    be careful, g711 . . . . you’ll be cleaning up post fest 😉

  22. Guyute711 Says:

Please take your Shit tents when you leave. Thanks in advance.

  23. sumodie Says:
