Pre-Ball Odds and Ends

6.10.11 (G.Lucas)

Trey In Rolling Stone: In a short but candid interview published in Rolling Stone yesterday, Trey mentioned that Phish will be working on a new album this winter, 2012 will be light on touring, and that he is considering covering Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” Read the whole piece here!

An interesting excerpt from Trey on the history of Phish festivals:

The festivals grew organically out of our early scene in Vermont. We were always a party band and we used to play outside a lot. People always seemed to show up. I remember a big pig roast at our friend Ian’s farm one summer – everyone came and slept in the field. We did a gig at our friend Amy’s farm in Maine and suddenly it was 5,000 people. Then we went to Plattsburgh and it was 50,000. You have to keep in mind, though, that there were no festivals to speak of when Phish was doing those early ones. I remember hearing about Burning Man, but even that was just getting going in the Nineties. Now there are tons, but it all felt very cutting edge in the mid-Nineties. There was no playbook. We were making it up as we went along.

Morning all, greetings from Monday. Last day in Shanghai, off to Beijing tomorrow. You gotta love a city that is commonly called BJ.

  6. RamblinMind Says:

I know sometimes people see it as a set-killer if it is poorly placed, or just as stupid Phish antics, but Makisupa makes me smile everytime I hear it. I guess that’s my favorite bit of Phishiness.

It would be cool if Fish busted out a real drum solo occasionally instead of the usual kickdrum kind of thing he typically does when Trey calls him out.

  7. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

makisupa makes me smile when they play it like MSG

Makisupa makes me want to puff.

spent the last 3 hours ripping up the basement carpet after the old lady though she spotted some moldish type stuff ( i did concur) after our little flood the other day. Oh well. Nothing like a little hard labor, makes the cocktail after taste that much better.

Regarding economics. It does indeed suck out there. I lost my “real” job in ’07 and have been putzing around since until this new one i got 3 weeks ago.

In 2000 i made 5 times what i’ll make this year and 10 times what i made the last few years. Never would have imagined my peak earning years would have been when i was 27 years old. It’s a grind, keep at it. We got no choice.

  12. phoammhead Says:

    yeah, i hear you, mrP . . . it’s a bitches, bitches!

Sore all over. Had to bail on the string-style weed whacker and beat back the forest with one of those ones that takes an actual blade. About 3 feet back in the underbrush, I ran into a brushpile we made back in Stick Season (October-ish). The forest grows fast around here.

My grandiose plans for a weekend of trimming were only about 25% realized. Shit is no joke. The original plan was to trim back the trails through the woods; I’m still running up the side of the yard, a good 30 yards from even getting TO the woods. I guess that’s my weekends for a while.

Live Bait 5 was *awesome* accompaniment though.

  20. plord Says:

Also went in and cut down every thumb-thick stem of Sumac, which was choking out actual wildflowers and threatening to grow tall enough to disrupt the view. It became a mission. I lost count, but there’s over 150 of them stacked by the shed now.

  21. voopa Says:

Work it plord, the ultimate battle.

  22. plord Says:

Nature will win in the end, but I’m gonna make a fight of it.

  23. Robear Says:

    Time for heavier equipment, plord.

Just published 6-17 sources review. Went with MK41>VMS5u source. Its a relatively new source (just posted in last few days). It sounds really good, and is loud as hell.
