Pre-Ball Odds and Ends

6.10.11 (G.Lucas)

Trey In Rolling Stone: In a short but candid interview published in Rolling Stone yesterday, Trey mentioned that Phish will be working on a new album this winter, 2012 will be light on touring, and that he is considering covering Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” Read the whole piece here!

An interesting excerpt from Trey on the history of Phish festivals:

The festivals grew organically out of our early scene in Vermont. We were always a party band and we used to play outside a lot. People always seemed to show up. I remember a big pig roast at our friend Ian’s farm one summer – everyone came and slept in the field. We did a gig at our friend Amy’s farm in Maine and suddenly it was 5,000 people. Then we went to Plattsburgh and it was 50,000. You have to keep in mind, though, that there were no festivals to speak of when Phish was doing those early ones. I remember hearing about Burning Man, but even that was just getting going in the Nineties. Now there are tons, but it all felt very cutting edge in the mid-Nineties. There was no playbook. We were making it up as we went along.

I guess I’m pretty lonely in my ‘let the band play as much/little as they want’ camp.

  2. angryjoggerz Says:

Really not understanding how you can get hooked on these? Doctor friends? I hear about rush limbaugh and just wonder how you’d Keep going. After a few days the tolerance was UP. You’d have to really be eating them like mints.

Silly, i like your thinking with the big 2013

Jtran – sick, i’ll be stoked to listen to some of the shows from the islands

  6. mitch Says:

Fest 8 everyone signed up for a free Month trial

Dad has xm/Sirius so I’m set

  7. chefbradford Says:

AJ, for F8 they did a deal where if you signed up for a free trial for Sirius you could stream the shows or something. I don’t remember exactly. I remember listening for sure. Which reminds me, on my old desk-top I have a bookmarked page with HD audio/video of the acoustic set. I need to fire that old bitch up again soon.

And I agree, cutting the touring back again (over 50 shows/year for two years, just over 30 this year, and then less again next year) is a bad idea. They are a live band, and for them to gel the right way, they need to play together a lot. Although, if they go into the studio, hopefully they will play together a hell of a lot. Trey kept saying something “new” in the studio. I hope he’s right

  8. ThePigSong Says:

Fest8 Suzy is a keeper. Which were the other keepers? Greek…and

  9. angryjoggerz Says:

Weird that they are going into the studio and basically have not played any of their new songs from last year, but who knows whats up? Im guessing Steam will be a centerpiece. Dr. Gabel, not so much. Can anyone put a quick list of all the new songs together? there must be an albums worth, right?

  10. mitch Says:

I heard it’s a rap album chef. Trey has been getting inspired in Harlem.

    22k tickets sold
    11k ‘likes’ on facebook

aw: please read above information and comment on the state of the fanbase, i.e., phishies

(no offense to any of you among those 11k. just seems crazy to this non-facebooker 😉 )

  13. mitch Says:

    That broadway junk from msg

  14. ThePigSong Says:

unfortunately, I just couldn’t give a fuck less about a studio album.

  15. sumodie Says:

Can’t believe a radio stream of SBIX would really hurt festi ticket sales….seems like apples n oranges to me. Hope it’s true

is the whole concrete/car race track thing going to feel offensive in the Phish festival setting?

I’ve secretly known all along that this was the real reason behind slow tix sales 😉

Anyone else planning to run around the NASCAR track for the Runaway Jim 5k? I might……but pre-registration is now closed. I’m only in it for the free bib anyways

  16. angryjoggerz Says:

    Halfway to the Moon
    Burn that Bridge
    My Problem Right There
    Dr. Gabel

  17. sumodie Says:

I’m looking forward to the new album. IMO, Phish needs (good) new tunes in order to stay fresh and inspired. Steam is a great start…

  18. sumodie Says:

Rhymes is an Al Green cover via Mike’s band

  19. alf Says:

got your back roads route all planned out sumo? been working on mine 😉

  20. ThePigSong Says:

TTE has zero appearances in 2011, things are definitely looking up.

On a different note, I’ve got a suitcase size box full of SBIX koozies to fly up to NY with. I’m not in it for the money, this idea is turning into a big pain in my ass.

  22. angryjoggerz Says:

Maybe it will be an all covers album.

  23. mitch Says:

I need another hard copy of an album like I need another hole in my head but I want new fresh jams at shows. New album should give us that.

I think a fest at a racetrack would be cool but I’m from Indy so ymmv. Wondering what kinda art installations they can do there. I need to see a map.

I also think it would be fun to walk the track. At IT, I was thinking how cool the 5k would be since I ran cross the year before. Anyone remember how early the race was? That’s a rare breed at a Phish fest waking up that early and going for a run.

  24. angryjoggerz Says:

Im confused… I thought Alf was Mitch.

  25. mitch Says:

Pig, you’ll find it will be a fun social thing at the fest. Go talk to everyone while you walk around.

Toss a few to the WW while you’re at it.

Did you use the canon image or make it car themed?
