Pre-Ball Odds and Ends

6.10.11 (G.Lucas)

Trey In Rolling Stone: In a short but candid interview published in Rolling Stone yesterday, Trey mentioned that Phish will be working on a new album this winter, 2012 will be light on touring, and that he is considering covering Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” Read the whole piece here!

An interesting excerpt from Trey on the history of Phish festivals:

The festivals grew organically out of our early scene in Vermont. We were always a party band and we used to play outside a lot. People always seemed to show up. I remember a big pig roast at our friend Ian’s farm one summer – everyone came and slept in the field. We did a gig at our friend Amy’s farm in Maine and suddenly it was 5,000 people. Then we went to Plattsburgh and it was 50,000. You have to keep in mind, though, that there were no festivals to speak of when Phish was doing those early ones. I remember hearing about Burning Man, but even that was just getting going in the Nineties. Now there are tons, but it all felt very cutting edge in the mid-Nineties. There was no playbook. We were making it up as we went along.

Should we expect a journey into wipeout this summer? Maybe slammed inside Bowie or something? That looks pretty tasty on paper. See for yourselves…

    Bowie -> Wipeout -> Bowie

    Phish Lesson 7:
Want to know what’s up with the band?
Don’t listen to what Trey says in interviews.

    re: Trey and family obligations

    Obviously, I don’t know…

But, I think the family obligations might be coming from Mike (as he’s expecting)

I think Trey’s family is getting old enough that he’s a little more free.

I guess I’m saying that there might not be a contradiction. Trey may want to tour, but some of the others need to help with a younger family.

i totally get that. I’m down with the sustainable Phish movement.

Also, as we know, plans can change. They could be planning for a “light 2012” get the itch and we see a 30 show year which is light, but would be acceptable

super slick gin has been playing on the bunny. weekapaugesque jamming at one point. lots of different themes in this one. trey calls out “Leo” mid jam and page takes over while trey yells “alright!” — $$$. would love to know what the date is.

  6. kayatosh Says:

not so sure about this tosh avatar. may need to switch back to the red gold and green version.

  7. Robear Says:

Lurkers kicking ass on the contests again?

100’s of single use, disposable plastic beach balls to throw away? Waterwheel says ‘No!’

Seriously, don’t pop those things and throw them away. Deflate and take home as souvenir’s.

I just wanted to be an asshole to the phishies yesterday

Robear has a good argument against beachballs

love the breakdown from Boogie On>Waves.

  13. kayatosh Says:

robear: I agree about the beachballs at SB. pollution in every sense of the word. I love the community feeling behind the movement, but beachballs? come on!

been spinning the bunny all morning. phish jukebox.

time to eat some pale green ghee.

What’s up BB. Rain killed my plans for the day. I was gonna go mano a mano with Ma Nature and re-groom the trail through the woods and down to the creek, beat back the forest a few feet or so, get rid of all the poison parsnips, trim the hedges, all that. Foiled before I even began.

Nothing to do but crank tunes I guess 🙂

    Also: Hooray New York.

  17. [Not Tom] Says:

Master of Puppets would be so sick. That album encapsulates my junior year of high school. It was all metal, mullets, and camaros (I had neither a mullet nor a camaro, btw, but was heavily into the metal).

Though, as much as I love Fishman, Battery and Damage Inc. will push him to his speed limits (although he’ll probably just play it his own style). On that topic, Lars is and always will be a punk, regardless of his skills on the skins.

  18. RamblinMind Says:

@Silly – I think Page is expecting too (“Questionmark McConnell”)

  19. kayatosh Says:

a little more water content in the ghee than desirable. ghee now has a slight icey crunch (kept in freezer). used the water w/ the butter and green method. probably didn’t drain off the water completely. probably needed more time in the freezer/fridge to separate.

  20. SillyWilly Says:

    distribute drugs, not beach balls.

  21. Phamily Berzerker Says:

word huggiebear. The carbon footprint of a festival like this is not insignificant and the folks working to minimized said footprint are well learned on the matter.

trashing somethign just to trash it is not helpful versus a deflate and save method.

  22. kayatosh Says:

some qual. jerry and merl – 2.5.74:

32 yr. old jerry. kicking ass w/ a groovy band.

  25. plord Says:

Master of Puppets and Battery were the internal soundtrack to every backstroke race I swam in for like 5 years. MoP for the 200m, Battery for the 100m, perfect stroke pacing.

Phish would kill it, but I might involuntarily start trying to swim across the lawn. It’s the flipturn off that wook over yonder that would cause trouble, I think.
