Trey Tour Kicks Off

2.25.2011 (Michael Stein)

Trey kicked off his solo tour on Saturday with a benefit show for Vermont Flood Relief efforts in Burlington. From all reports, Trey’s band was far more patient and focused on jamming than last tour. He ditched the acoustic sing-along for two sets of electric work, and included the horns in the jams far more than last year. And Trey even debuted two two tunes! I wasn’t able to make it to Vermont, so I asked another fan, and reader of Phish Thoughts, Jonathan Tran, to do the honors. His review is below and links you over to the “Reader Reviews” page. If anyone is interested in writing a review for one of the upcoming TAB shows, please shoot me an email at

I: Cayman Review, Simple Twist Up Dave, Liquid Time, Gotta Jibboo, Snake Head Thumb*, Burlap Sack and Pumps, Money, Love and Change, Magilla, The Devil Went Down to Georgia, Drifting

II: Acting the Devil, Alaska, Clint Eastwood, Push On ‘Til the Day, Sand, Let Me Lie, Valentine, Winter Queen*, Tuesday, Windora Bug, First Tube

E: Hey Ya!, Show of Life

TAB @ Higher Ground, Burlington, VT: 10.1.11 / by Jonathan Tran

2.25.11 - Pittsburgh (Michael Stein)

Trey and his solo band opened their tour with an inspired effort Saturday night in Burlington, where the band played the 750-person Higher Ground for a show that was only announced two weeks ago. With proceeds benefiting Vermont flood recovery efforts TAB threw down a musically relevant show that only foreshadows good things to come this tour.  Before you wonder any longer, yes, Trey decided to drop the acoustic first set in favor of two electric. And, yes, this was a welcome move by just about every fan in the room. Also of note was the return of improvised horn parts (instead of leaving stage) during jams, which was absent from last February’s winter tour. In short, all signs pointed towards “Go!” on the first night of Trey tour.

With the energy already at a peak before show time, the band came out firing with the up-tempo “Cayman Review” followed by the ever-requested “Simple Twist Up Dave.” It seems as though Trey’ has decided that TAB tour is where “Liquid Time” will stay, and the band crushed the tune last night. The uplifting jam fit the Irene recovery vibe of the evening and this lesser-played song went over as well as anything with the crowd.

The fireworks came out next as the band grooved into “Gotta Jibboo.” This version veered away from recent Phish versions and turned into a full-band dance showcase with Trey comping Ray’s clav and organ parts, while Russ and Tony held down the low end. The presence of the horn section throughout the jam seemed to push Trey further into the groove, all the while filling space with well placed musical accents. The debut of “Snake Head Thumb” came next, and was also well received by the attentive Burlington crowd.  A “Stealing Time”-“Steam”-“Ocelot” mash-up, this gritty blues number developed into a hard-edged jam that fits Trey’s current guitar style. I could see this song making it to the Big League, and it would be a welcome first set addition…READ ON HERE!

Sounds like a great show, nice writeup Jtran.

Wish he was heading further west this tour. No TAB for me.

    Good weekend, went too fast.

  2. SillyWilly Says:

maybe Mr. P finds himself sitting next to Paul Hornung and one row up from Timmy Brown?

gets all kinds of war stories

michael floyd has 220 yards and manti te’o records three sacks just for looking at the Maryland backfield

next show we see Mr. P with a kelly green T-shirt on…

down with disease, as they say.

  3. Mr. Palmer Says:

My bro-in -law went to ND for grad school. I’m gonna have to hit him up for some gear.

  4. tela'smuff Says:

    great review jtran!

  5. SillyWilly Says:

yeah, Mr. P, if ND somehow finds themselves 7-2 going into that game, the atmosphere should be electric. Especially if Maryland shows some signs of life

(they have to beat Air Force, USC, Navy, and Wake Forest to get to 7-2. Doable. But, this has been a roller coaster year so far)

  6. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Aaron Lynch is a beast. another sack for the freshman. teo ain’t so bad. only three TFL this week though 🙄

  7. SillyWilly Says:

I love Manti Te’o: The Mormon Monster, The Poly Punisher, the Hawaiian Hellion.

Watching him play makes me laugh. Obviously, he’s physically a monster, but it’s his head. When was the last time a team ran a screen Te’o’s way?? The surest mark of a great linebacker is when he makes it apparent he knows what play the offense is going to run before they do:

    Manti Teo.

I love Aaron Lynch and Stephon Tuitt. I hope Ishaq Williams and Troy Nicklas are continuing to develop. If Te’o leaves (McShay has got him as the best defensive prospect this year) then we’re going to need them. Because, I’m sorry, but Dan Fox and Carlo Calabrese are well…jokes.

fox just isn’t a linebacker. and Calabrese has got too much Jersey in him to play the pass. haha.

  8. SillyWilly Says:

    sorry for the hi-jack

12/30/97 remaster sounds really good to me

this was one of the first shows I ever had. Lucky for me it was a great one to cut my phishy teeth on.

  9. SillyWilly Says:

im sorry that’s not a remaster it’s just a new source

  10. kayatosh Says:

jtran: way to hold it down. well done.

TT anyone? looks like lycan and I are in there, but not sure lycan is awake.

  11. Jtran Says:

Water main broke over the weekend here at work. 4000 sq feet with 3/8 inch water on the floor.

Just spent 2 hours squeegeeing. Kind of beats a normal Monday morning (don’t tell the boss that)

Have any recordings surfaced of the show yet? There were 2 tapers set up. Unfortunately I’ve never heard a $$$ recording from a show at HG.

  12. SillyWilly Says:

nothing’s popped up on bt.etree yet, jtran

  13. kayatosh Says:

For anyone that was chased off by the previous week’s TT glitches, TT working well today.

  14. Mr. Palmer Says:

I’ll be by in a few @ kaya. How about them Birds? Not a good day for Philly sports. My heart breaks for you……hehe

  15. voopa Says:

Jtran- Have had a recording of moe. @ HG from ’99 w/Fishman and Masefield for years. It’s a crazy matrix including mics hung from the ceiling, but still one of my favorite AUDs.

  16. kayatosh Says:

palms: so glad I didn’t make any “dream team” posts at halftime. past two eagles losses have been hard to swallow. I was chalking eagles up as 2-2 in my mind in 2nd half – and that’s my problem right there.

tough phils loss too. cards looked legit last night. tight game. Larusa made more moves than a chess grandmaster.

    Nice job Jtran

I’m in the process of uploading flac’s and mp3’s to mediafire of my preferred audience sources of miner’s picks from summer tour. I’ll have a link once there are a few uploaded. It looks like summer 1 will take most of the day to upload, so if you are interested, it might take a while to download.

  19. guitarpicker420! Says:

    Oh, and go Cards!

  20. plord Says:

    Great write-up jtran.

  21. halcyon Says:

    Morning folks…..

    Stapes and Tela’s

Amon Tobin is on a wednesday night 10/19 I believe. I won’t be making that show unfortunately. School night for me, and will have to leave the front range around 3:30am to make it on time to work. We might be down the weekend before for some good old fashioned haunted house and corn maze somewhere. Get our fright on before Halloween. Do you guys know of any good haunted houses down there?

  22. guitarpicker420! Says:

Here’s the link to miner’s picks. Right now, bethel woods is all that is up, but I will have all of summer leg 1 up by the end of the day.

  23. guitarpicker420! Says:

Please let me know if this works, I’ve never used media fire before.

  24. Mike in Austin Says:

  25. Leo Weaver Says:
