TTFF: More MSG Madness

The Garden

Last week we looked at some of the elite moments in Madison Square Garden Holiday Run history—and this week there is plenty more! With a December legacy like none other in the venue,Phish has more than enough to fill out another stellar Friday playlist. These tracks further illustrate the explosive music the band has cranked out at the end of the year in The Garden.

Ghost > Ha Ha Ha” 12.31.98 I

Tweezer -> Cities” 12.31.98 II

After a balloon-popping fiasco all but ruined the third set “Tweezer” on New Year’s Eve ’97, Phish annihilated this second set beast the following year.

Carini -> Katy -> Sally > Frankenstein” 12.30.97 E

Grade-A Phish crack through and through. The first domestic “Carini,” the birth of the “Moma Dance,” and a reprise of “Sneakin Sally”—the bustout from ’89 that opened the show. This sequence gets my vote for the best encore in the band’s career. Unquestionably.

Drowned -> Lizards” 12.31.95 II

The first appearance of “Drowned” after Halloween kicked off set two in this legendary show and gracefully slid into “Lizards.”

One of the finest jams of 1997’s stellar three-night run.

Mike’s Song” 12.31.97 II

A filthy and menacing version; typical of ’97 “Mike’s Songs.”

Weekapaug Groove” 12.31.97 II

This dynamic and extended “Weekapaug” closed the second set of New Year’s Eve on its highest note.

***

Run Like an Antelope” 12.29.97 I

Pure and unadulterated fire; one of the elite versions of the year.

You Enjoy Myself” 12.31.95 III

When the band finished what many consider their finest New Year’s Run with a blowout version of “YEM” at The Garden, all was right in the universe of Phish.

    “Commencing AV ’03 DWD.”

    Great Disease->Catapult

  3. Mike in Austin Says:

    You don’t need a photo with the proletariate.

    Ask for a copy. Frame it on your wall, then put a picture of yourself framed above it.

  4. tela'smuff Says:

    @Kang – that 30 show gap was from the last performance. 8-12-04 to 8-14-09 = 30 show gap. hasn’t been played since then, which sounds about right for a 105 show gap.

  5. Michael Kang Says:

    Oh, right. Gotcha.

    Right at the top: Catapult has not been seen in 105 Phish shows.

  6. BingosBrother Says:

    I never saw Chairman Mao in a group photo.

    take your own photo
    blow it up 10 times as big as theirs
    ???
    distribute equally

  7. GhostDog Says:

    Anybody pre-order the Hampton release? I found it with the link submitted on pg 1 of this post on Friday but now it is gone.

  8. GhostDog Says:

    97 is dirty.

  9. poop goblin Says:

    Great name GhostDog

    classic flick. love that shit.

  10. angryjoggerz Says:

    I’m more of a wait a while then throw them under the bus kinda guy. Chicago way.

  11. angryjoggerz Says:

    Ghost Dog Japanese import soundtrack is RZA’s opus, imo.

  12. Kaveh Says:

    @GhostDog:

    I got my pre-order in and then a couple of hours later the pre-order page was gone from Phish dot com. So I don’t know where it is officially anymore.

  13. Mike in Austin Says:

    Wow. I forgot this AV ’03 “Secret Smile” really really blows.

    Just for record. In person, I did not clap for the song.

  14. Guyute711 Says:

    You were so busy screaming like they were the Beatles you couldn’t clap eh?

  15. garretc Says:

    Huh… I just might have a CC hold already?

    Anybody else?

  16. Jtran Says:

    Good work garret

  17. brother Says:

    @tela…..part of the reason for that crowd eruption during that section in the split at cincy was the Kman’s light show….the spinning lights, i know i thought i was about to go for a ride on the spaceship

  18. garretc Says:

    Thanks Jtran, I put a lot of hard work into that lottery order before I sent it off into the world to fare on its own. It’s nice to see that it’s (probably) bearing fruit in return for my efforts!

  19. Jtran Says:

    I knew you really tried harder on this one

  20. Tom Says:

    Nice garret. Did you put in for all four days?

  21. garretc Says:

    I put in for one ticket all 4 days, but the hold is 137 something, so I think that’s almost certainly one to each of two nights, not NYE…

    Assuming that’s what the charge is for, but I can’t think of anything else it could be

  22. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    stop the ruse, garret. you know that is a charge for your internet porn habit.

  23. tela'smuff Says:

    @brother – true. CK5 was on point that whole night, but i think it they were part of the whole groupthink going on during the jam.

    but good observation. reminds me of the light CK had going during the Knoxville Waves. sickness. wild crowd was sent into the ether for a couple minutes.

  24. Jtran Says:

    Why did you post that garret? Now I’ll be checking my CC every 30 minutes

  25. garretc Says:

    Dammit TIII, you caught me!

    I wish I was one of the billions of people who knew of the existence of free porn, so I could stop spending all my hard earned cash on fap-fodder…
