Turkey Tunes: Pt. I

Turkey Day is Coming...

Phish and Thanksgiving have long held a connection in the minds of many fans. Landing on Fall Tour so many times, everyone has at least one funny story about a Phishy Thanksgiving spent on the road. But without a fall tour this year, let’s take the opportunity to look back at the intersection of fall tours past and Turkey Day. This playlist is plucked entirely of shows played on the Wednesday, immediately preceding the festival of family, food and football.

Zero -> 2001 -> Cities -> Ya Mar” 11.26.97 II, Hartford, CT

Classy fellow, that Herman Cain. Of course my father in law is into him. Cannot wait until Christmas!

On a related note, I have a new staff member who is from China and seems to have married a white Christian ‘Merican, which is why he is able to work in the USA. He is a great guy, but obviously under the clutches of his wife and her christian thing. Anyway, he jsut asked me if I was excited about Christmas (bad idea) and I sort of broke it down for him about how I am not christian and not into celebrating the birth of alien baby jesus born to a virgin, etc. I did not say it in a rude way, but was honest. Poor guy, looks so sad and confused. I think he thought that coming to America would be some sort of Normal Rockwell situation. Who knows, may be in his family. For me it is going to be ear plugs, wine, iPad, and maybe some new pharmaceuticals. Good news I have opted out of gifts now, told my family that any I receive will be promptly donate to goodwill, so please do not bother and they seem to be listening. Last thing I need is more stuff.

11.25.94 was a great post-Thanksgiving show. I remember asking everyone in the UIC if we all had a great Thanksgiving the day before. And a great Harpua with the “happy green love beams and angry red hate beams.”

Sucks to come all the way to the USA only to work for a heathen.

  8. Tzara's Ghost Says:

Thanks for the link @Kaveh, beautiful rendition.A great year for that song the 6.15.85 version gets me every time. Though ’85 was not the most beautiful Jerry year. Struggling times.

  9. EL Duderino Says:

that UIC show was Great! also the Dayton show

  10. Tzara's Ghost Says:

@Kaveh, eldude, anyone else. Anybody make it all the way through the ’72 box yet? I’ve worked my way up to 5/18, struggling through some Mr Charlie fatigue. On the home stretch though.

  11. EL Duderino Says:

My girl is so into christmas too AJ…

It sucks and blows IMHO. but I don’t have children, maybe that would change my attitude

  12. EL Duderino Says:

    @ Tzara’s

No, i kinda gave up and started to hit only highlights.

I have yet to spin this last RT release

  13. EL Duderino Says:

Her folks’ will give her a couple of presents and a check for like 2,000.00$ so I guess if that happened to me every year I’d like Christmas too

  14. Robear Says:

AJ, there are some funny stories out here re: bringing Christianity to the natives. They had a hard time with the ‘virgin mary’ story. They figured someone was fibbing.

  15. Kaveh Says:

Tzara: I really love the 11.01.85 version. KILLER!

E72: I’m through the first Amsterdam show; after the England festival. I went at it hot and heavy. I’ve been taking a break; since you get a lot of songs night after night. But that has it advantages too. I’ll finish by spring. :)

  16. Tzara's Ghost Says:

Yeah I spend a lot of time on the road in rural areas in Sept and Oct, so that ’72 cowboy sound really worked for those long drives. In urban drizzly dark Novembers just give me a Dark Star or Other One.

I’m kinda weird about going through every note this first time though. Even bad Big River soundchecks.

I did the Madison show; home for Turkey Day; next day down to Chicago and then the next night in Minneapolis…for the, IMO, most balls to the walls David Bowie I’ve seen live.

    Classy fellow, that Herman Cain.

So he’s saying that if your doctor is of a different faith you shouldn’t trust him? Wow.

    *applies to med school*

I thought it would, but just makes me feel like more of a hypocrite. At least I can use Santa as a bartering chip in manipulating my daughter. Parent of the year!

  20. angryjoggerz Says:

    So, yeah, anyway…. happy holidays!

  21. joemeg Says:

bah humbug. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet, and the scrooges are already out. Merry Christmas everyone!

  22. angryjoggerz Says:

Hey, I figure that if everyone can start decorating for Christmas in early
November, then I can start talking shit at the same time.

The only way to change these traditions is to stop them.
