A Box Set Debate…

In Stores Today

Instead of posting on Phish Thoughts today, I co-wrote an article with “Guy Forget” of Online Phish Tour for publication on their site. With the official release of the Hampton/Winston-Salem box set today, we had a written debate on which show is the “best” in the box—nothing like making art compete! I made a case for 11.23 at Winston-Salem, while he took the position of Hampton’s second night, 11.22. Check out the article, it should be a fun read!

Jam of the Day:

Tweezer -> Izabella” 12.6.97 II

Today is the 14 year anniversary of my favorite “Tweezer” ever played.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/ph97-12-06d2t1.mp3,http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/ph97-12-06d2t2.mp3]

Here’s a link to a piece I wrote about this jam a while back. I’ll post the beginning below.

My “Go-To” Jam

12/6/97 "Tweezer" T-Shirt - LE

Everyone has a go-to jam. It fits any mood you could ever be in, and you’ve listened to it several hundred times in your life. It is the first piece of music you want to hear when you are glowing after a show, ready to conquer the world. It is the first piece of music you want to listen to after a hard day at work. It is the only piece of music you could never possibly get sick of, even if played on a loop in your head forever. It is that analog tape you played to death, that CD you never lost, and now it is forever stored on your computer, iPod, and several other devices. It is part of you; you feel like what you hear, it just all fits. For me, there is only one answer to this scenario—the “Tweezer” from Auburn Hills ’97. Read on!

how the fuck does Boise State join the Big East?

Someone explain this to someone who studied Geography in college?!?!

  2. MrCompletely Says:

Piece of Mind is the best Maiden album, obv

  3. Leo Weaver Says:

Money brah, money. Big east needs a dance partner to remain viable…they have $$ and an AQ slot. I think the Big East only has a couple years left. Eventually BS will make it to the PAC16.

  4. Tom Says:

It’s all about money. Connecticut and San Diego State are two schools that could not be much further apart and yet they will still be in the same conference.

    piece of mind > powerslave

i’m a mix on sabbath’s first 4 with paranoid coming in 4th. really listen to the other 3 depending on mood. “the wizard” was the first tune to open my hesher little head up in 5th or 6th grade. (we also were listening to dio era sabbath at that time as well…heaven and hell and mob rules).

phish – that hampton halleys…have to say it again. sick. sorry ALF but that boxset is just so crispy delicious.

  6. gavinsdad Says:

@tom – thought i saw that you got your nye ticket? nice work. now you need your fake id for miner’s dealie on the 29th.

  7. DukeOfLizards Says:

  8. Kaveh Says:

HOLY SHIT @T3….that video is too much!

FYI: my mp3 code has been spoken for.

  9. Leo Weaver Says:

This box set does sound phenomenal.

Hadn’t listened to the 11.21 II in some time, just spun it here at the office. Still pretty damn good. Probably just my preference for the space over shred, but I’ll take the Boise Bag over the Hampton Bag. I think.

  10. Tom Says:

    @Gdad

Yeah, was lucky enough to get tickets for Dayman and myself. As for Miner’s shindig that sadly might not be possible.

    @Leo

    With you on Boise Bag

  16. EL Duderino Says:

  17. gavinsdad Says:

@el dude – i’m 2 miles east of “worse than detroit” and 5 miles west of “huge houses and country clubs”

  18. gavinsdad Says:

^and i grew up in “friendly white families”

  19. EL Duderino Says:

    Nice

  20. MrCompletely Says:

I thought the Jersey thing seemed pretty on point….

so hey this just came up in another convo and I thought I’d mention it.

and I’m not trying to be preachy or headier than thou…people only have the money that they have…

But if you download & don’t pay for this official release, you lose all right to complain about official releases for ever.

Phish is finally giving the people what they say they want. In a sense they’re calling our bluff. If they don’t turn a nice profit on this, there’s no reason for them to put any effort into doing it again.

I’m sure this has been hashed out on here but I was just engaged in a discussion of the economics of official Dead and Phish archival releases in the torrenting era so it was on my mind

again, no judgment or preaching. just making a practical observation. think of it like training a dog. everytime they do something right, reward them and they’ll do it again.

  21. EL Duderino Says:

if you’re not preachin’ why bring it up?

  22. halcyon Says:

Here is the link to that Miles Davis Show if anyone is interested. Miles Davis 04-19-1970

2 folders. If they are in .shn format you will need to use Trader’s Little Helper, or Foobar to convert. Enjoy!

  23. joe Says:

seems as though they are really testing everyone by putting it up on spotify as well. (if I understand it correctly, which I’m on 75% sure that I do)

  24. Mr palmer Says:

I wish I was an exec living in a mansion driving a Mercedes.

  25. garretc Says:

“if you’re not preachin’ why bring it up?”

    Because it’s true and relevant?
