A Box Set Debate…

In Stores Today

Instead of posting on Phish Thoughts today, I co-wrote an article with “Guy Forget” of Online Phish Tour for publication on their site. With the official release of the Hampton/Winston-Salem box set today, we had a written debate on which show is the “best” in the box—nothing like making art compete! I made a case for 11.23 at Winston-Salem, while he took the position of Hampton’s second night, 11.22. Check out the article, it should be a fun read!

Jam of the Day:

Tweezer -> Izabella” 12.6.97 II

Today is the 14 year anniversary of my favorite “Tweezer” ever played.

Here’s a link to a piece I wrote about this jam a while back. I’ll post the beginning below.

My “Go-To” Jam

12/6/97 "Tweezer" T-Shirt - LE

Everyone has a go-to jam. It fits any mood you could ever be in, and you’ve listened to it several hundred times in your life. It is the first piece of music you want to hear when you are glowing after a show, ready to conquer the world. It is the first piece of music you want to listen to after a hard day at work. It is the only piece of music you could never possibly get sick of, even if played on a loop in your head forever. It is that analog tape you played to death, that CD you never lost, and now it is forever stored on your computer, iPod, and several other devices. It is part of you; you feel like what you hear, it just all fits. For me, there is only one answer to this scenario—the “Tweezer” from Auburn Hills ’97. Read on!

here is why it’s not preaching: I’m not saying you’re a bad person for downloading things if you can’t afford to pay for them.

it’s just that when they put out official releases, they expect to break even at least, or hopefully make a profit. This is not an unreasonable expectation on their part, but neither is it assured these days.

So if you download it and don’t pay, you are removing their incentive to create more similar releases in the future. I can absolutely assure you they track and compare the relative performance of releases from various eras.

So I’m approaching it as a practical issue and not a moral one.

  19. Mr palmer Says:

Plus, it’s 36 bucks for three sick shows . It’s not like $500 box set.

Buy the release, read ( miners) book!

    Ugh. Missed re-release.

I agree with Mr. C (mostly) on this. I own every LivePhish CD, official release (Hamptons, etc) etc. I do have a lot of the live shows from 2003-4 era that I didn’t pay for the SBDs. Call it rationalization, but those things are such terrible quality, I think Phish should even think about selling them.

I truly get Spotify, in that I can basically peruse a lot of artists, listen to them as much as I want. But in the end, I found I really liked The New Mastersounds, Tinawarin, etc … and I bought the albums.

My wife asked me “I thought Spotify meant you wouldn’t be buying more albums? Wasn’t that the justification”

I told her “I won’t be buying albums that I really don’t want to have in my collection anymore. Basically I’ll have less stinker albums that I just took a flyer on.”

  21. MrCompletely Says:

yeah pretty reasonable price point on that thing I think

  22. joe Says:

also just threw back 29th in sec 403…life shit still way too serious and day to day to make solid plans. counting on just getting down there for 28th and 29th shows, but don’t want to outlay the cash and then eat everything (although if I go I will eat whatever you give to me)

  23. Mr palmer Says:

    Peeps still pulling 30s. FYI
