A Box Set Debate…

In Stores Today

Instead of posting on Phish Thoughts today, I co-wrote an article with “Guy Forget” of Online Phish Tour for publication on their site. With the official release of the Hampton/Winston-Salem box set today, we had a written debate on which show is the “best” in the box—nothing like making art compete! I made a case for 11.23 at Winston-Salem, while he took the position of Hampton’s second night, 11.22. Check out the article, it should be a fun read!

Jam of the Day:

Tweezer -> Izabella” 12.6.97 II

Today is the 14 year anniversary of my favorite “Tweezer” ever played.

Here’s a link to a piece I wrote about this jam a while back. I’ll post the beginning below.

My “Go-To” Jam

12/6/97 "Tweezer" T-Shirt - LE

Everyone has a go-to jam. It fits any mood you could ever be in, and you’ve listened to it several hundred times in your life. It is the first piece of music you want to hear when you are glowing after a show, ready to conquer the world. It is the first piece of music you want to listen to after a hard day at work. It is the only piece of music you could never possibly get sick of, even if played on a loop in your head forever. It is that analog tape you played to death, that CD you never lost, and now it is forever stored on your computer, iPod, and several other devices. It is part of you; you feel like what you hear, it just all fits. For me, there is only one answer to this scenario—the “Tweezer” from Auburn Hills ’97. Read on!

AJ knows where the good dubstep is at. Being still in college all I hear is the worst of the worst at every party I’m at, hence the hate.

  2. angryjoggerz Says:

It is dubstep – much more similar to the origins of the dubstep sound than the wubwubwub thing it has become. Dubstep was originally mostly about pressure and space.

  3. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

James Blake is like singer/song writer dubstep, but yeah without the annoying womps so I don’t even view it as dubstep.

  4. angryjoggerz Says:

It is mostly bad now. The molly jam band kids seem to have embraced it, though.

This JB is sick so far. More jazzy.

Wow. It’s honestly been dead for about 4 years. Slow death.

Back upriver to shower, shave, do laundry, and sleep in a bed.

I’ll prolly buy the box set after the NYE run. Don’t want to spoil my ears before.

And like @Mr. C said, it’s good to support the ‘way too jammy’ releases with my wallet.

Miner, I just want to know one thing re: today’s debate: does he puff?

I think WS is my face of the run. Wasn’t there. Favorite ITB Jams:
    Prov Bowie
    95 NYE Run
    12/31/98 ‘Mikes>Ghost’
    11/29/98 gin/simple
    12/8/99 Halleys
    Disease Supreme
    Rock n Roll>Gorage Jam

This guy I know was hired by Umphrey’s Mcgee to do a tour documentary. He then took the footage and overdubbed parts and released indie films. Shit is classic.

    12/6/97. Yup.

I like 11/23 better overall, but Halley’s is my favorite jam of the three shows. Without a doubt. I dropped the coin on the boxset and feel good about it.

    Thanks for the Dubstep info….

    Bizarre and funny AJ

Yeah, I d/l’ed the release, but I’ll be buying it for sure. Probably this weekend.

Dammit I was snoozing on the re-release! Made dinner for the family, sit down with a Ranger IPA to answer emails, and BAM! Disappointment never tasted so… well, bitter. (It’s not the best IPA, but it’ll do.)

worse thing about watching breaking bad was it made me realize how desensitized I’ve become. Good stuff though.

  21. joe Says:

my view on the debate: The first 2 songs of the set are the best. of course, that’s all I’ve listened to since firing it up a little bit ago. but I can’t see it being better than this!

  22. Beantownboy Says:

Nice to see the James Blake love. His albums are great but his live performance is where it’s at. I tagged along with my sister and her guy to a show of Blake’s at the 9:30 club in October and was blown away by the sound and the bass shakin every ounce of my being.

  23. voopa Says:

Just compared Izabella’s from Hampton and 12/30/97…MSG wins, barely. And the sound on 12/30 is actually a bit better than H/W-S.

  24. angryjoggerz Says:

Just out of curiosity, did anyone listen to the hip hop mix I posted last week? I worked really hard at pulling those tunes and was really hoping the bb crew would like it. I know I am not one of the people on here with major music cred, but I honestly was making that one with the people on here in mind, so would love to think that people actually listened and hopefully enjoyed it.

  25. angryjoggerz Says:

Nice, beantown, glad you dug it. His sound is somehow quiet and loud. This new ep is heat.
