A Box Set Debate…

In Stores Today

Instead of posting on Phish Thoughts today, I co-wrote an article with “Guy Forget” of Online Phish Tour for publication on their site. With the official release of the Hampton/Winston-Salem box set today, we had a written debate on which show is the “best” in the box—nothing like making art compete! I made a case for 11.23 at Winston-Salem, while he took the position of Hampton’s second night, 11.22. Check out the article, it should be a fun read!

Jam of the Day:

Tweezer -> Izabella” 12.6.97 II

Today is the 14 year anniversary of my favorite “Tweezer” ever played.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/ph97-12-06d2t1.mp3,http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/ph97-12-06d2t2.mp3]

Here’s a link to a piece I wrote about this jam a while back. I’ll post the beginning below.

My “Go-To” Jam

12/6/97 "Tweezer" T-Shirt - LE

Everyone has a go-to jam. It fits any mood you could ever be in, and you’ve listened to it several hundred times in your life. It is the first piece of music you want to hear when you are glowing after a show, ready to conquer the world. It is the first piece of music you want to listen to after a hard day at work. It is the only piece of music you could never possibly get sick of, even if played on a loop in your head forever. It is that analog tape you played to death, that CD you never lost, and now it is forever stored on your computer, iPod, and several other devices. It is part of you; you feel like what you hear, it just all fits. For me, there is only one answer to this scenario—the “Tweezer” from Auburn Hills ’97. Read on!

^Thank you, sir. Download in progress.

The thing about fall ’97 is that EVERYTHING is well played and has a little something something extra behind it. Listening to the first set Theme>BEK from Winston Salem right now and they just let it all hang out. Fearless. Like the honey badger.

Caspian > Esther from Raleigh this Summer was a fun spin today

very heady stuff, some excellent tone control by Red in the Esther and Caspian has a very pleasing outro

Greatest 3 night run ever, right?

Wish I had seen it. The best 3 night run I caught was 7/19-21/98. Followed closely by 10/29-31/98. Other notables I saw, 9/8-10/00, 7/15-17/98, 9/10-12/99, 9/28-30/95 and 5/25-27/94.

Then there’s the Red Rocks shows. And the Crest. Oh Phish, how do I love thee?

  5. butter Says:

i hear a band learning to swing it with some swagger again

    what a fun ride

Europe 72 and HWS are like two awesome friends that I want to hang out with all the time because they are just killing it.

  7. angryjoggerz Says:

PS, is it a bad sign if I caught my 2 year old asking Siri for papa today?

  8. tela'smuff Says:

AJ – i’m grabbing it now. have struggled with hip-hop last few years, until Shabazz Palaces hit with that album (by the way, Digable Planets are back).

i’ll give this one a spin and a full review tomorrow! 😉

  9. tela'smuff Says:

scratch that. upon this intro, it’s hot and i’ll be listening now….

IPA poured. nothing like a cold brew on top of a daily dose of cold medicine.

  10. vegas wolfmans Says:

Has anyone gone front to back with E72 yet? My Christmas break starts on Friday. I’ve been holding off listening until then to do it proper.

Unable to wait on HWS. Fierce.

I didn’t catch Hampton or WS, but did hit Cleveland>Detroit>Dayton. Not a shabby three nights strung together right there. And let’s not forget about the pre-Hampton stunner in 11/19. Not a complaint, but maybe they should have gone ahead and thrown that sucker in the box set too.

    2001>Wolfmans->Makisupa>Taste. Dirty, dirty, dirty.

  11. butter Says:

    fun Sand too

subplot to this show was the Lakers finishing off the Celtics in game 7 of the finals right during the “horse thru guyute” section

it was perfect part of the show to skip to catch the end of game on the large screens inside

    tons of Celtics fans obviously

  12. voopa Says:

    Best. Maki. Ever.

  13. tela'smuff Says:

everything’s alright when you’re living in the city…

  14. butter Says:

this was Sand was really Horsed

yall are spinnin H/WS, and i’m horsing around

  15. voopa Says:

What about the rest of you? What was your favorite 3 nights of Phish? Or 4?

  16. Leo Weaver Says:

Peppermint ice cream with hot fudge and hampton hood in my ears. Not bad.

  17. Mr palmer Says:

    Easy. 4 night run. 12/28-12/31 1998

  18. MrCompletely Says:

I spun it @aj. I kept it, too. Great work. Nice mix of old favorites with some things I didn’t know.

I’ll never go front to back on the Europe box.

I’ll spin every second set jam segment, every Playin’, every Jerry ballad, probably every BT Wind, my favorite Pig tunes…other than that, it’s not gonna happen

its a great tour but most of the first set material is really similar

  19. Leo Weaver Says:

hampton hood in my ears, not the ice cream and fudge. just to be clear.

Yeah Butter, that Sand was terribly horsed. Great DWD.

  20. vegas wolfmans Says:

voopa- No doubt. I imagine they figure they’ve got their bases covered by having thrown the Wolfmans->Maki on the Denver LP release. I love spinning that shit because there is always that insanity thrown in at the end out of nowhere- almost like a sick, sick second encore. The last 5ish minutes of wolfmans before drop into maki is exceptional. Good job, phish. Good job.

  21. tela'smuff Says:

i really enjoyed the Deer Creek ’00 3 night run as far as same venue. but for 3 or 4 shows straight i’d go with the Worcester>NYC shows in ;95, followed by the Kalamazoo>Det>Louisville>Chicago run in ’95.

the recent Dicks shows are due an honorable mention.

  22. stapes Says:

KP- still waiting on mine too. Eagerly. Ordered some DVDs too. So, they made money on me. Keep those releases coming!

  23. stapes Says:

    Same venue?

    Dicks
    Miami 03

  24. angryjoggerz Says:

Same venue for me would have to be either Greek or UIC

    n00b

  25. Tzara's Ghost Says:

I’m going front to back on the ’72 set, made it through 5/18. Just the last four nights to go. Had to skip a few el pasos, biodtls and ramble on roses along the way. The jams are great though, a lot I hadn’t heard.
