A Box Set Debate…

In Stores Today

Instead of posting on Phish Thoughts today, I co-wrote an article with “Guy Forget” of Online Phish Tour for publication on their site. With the official release of the Hampton/Winston-Salem box set today, we had a written debate on which show is the “best” in the box—nothing like making art compete! I made a case for 11.23 at Winston-Salem, while he took the position of Hampton’s second night, 11.22. Check out the article, it should be a fun read!

Jam of the Day:

Tweezer -> Izabella” 12.6.97 II

Today is the 14 year anniversary of my favorite “Tweezer” ever played.

Here’s a link to a piece I wrote about this jam a while back. I’ll post the beginning below.

My “Go-To” Jam

12/6/97 "Tweezer" T-Shirt - LE

Everyone has a go-to jam. It fits any mood you could ever be in, and you’ve listened to it several hundred times in your life. It is the first piece of music you want to hear when you are glowing after a show, ready to conquer the world. It is the first piece of music you want to listen to after a hard day at work. It is the only piece of music you could never possibly get sick of, even if played on a loop in your head forever. It is that analog tape you played to death, that CD you never lost, and now it is forever stored on your computer, iPod, and several other devices. It is part of you; you feel like what you hear, it just all fits. For me, there is only one answer to this scenario—the “Tweezer” from Auburn Hills ’97. Read on!

  3. EL Duderino Says:

  4. Mr.Miner Says:

    12/6/97 DEFINITELY trumps anything in this box set…(responding to comment from last page)

  5. Mr.Miner Says:

    12/6 = no meandering. Fire from note one of FIRST set through end of the show.

  6. GhostDog Says:

    12.6 Tweez is so good before they officially start the Tweezer. Everything they touched in Fall 97 turned to gold…

    Ghost>Izabella from summer 97 is pretty tight too.

  7. Mr.Miner Says:

    YEMabella from Dallas ’97 is the shit as well.

  8. Guyute711 Says:

    Damn, 6-30-06 Phil Lesh and Friends, St Stephen is pretty hot.

  9. Jtran Says:

    12/6 set II was the first ’97 Fall show i heard when i came out of my mountain man/career in golf business detour. actually when i went on my Phish hiatus in summer of 97, 12/6 was the first of any Phish post-Europe ’97 I heard. it is still up there as probably my favorite set of Phish overall. i mean, the last show i saw was NYE in Boston, heard a couple Europe shows from Feb and all i took from those were the new song debuts. so when i heard 12/6 it was such a dramatic change i still can’t truly grasp it. the Tweezer>Isabella>Twist is maybe one of the greatest sequences of Phish. played.

    the next show i heard from this tour was 12/13/97 and that Ghost about sent me into a year long depression for missing that run.

    Can someone place any other jams the melody Trey plays with 4 mins to go in this WS Gin are?

    Seems like a common late 90s wind down melody that I recognize from somewhere else

  12. EL Duderino Says:

    i might have that one for ya’ G$$$

    Way to beat up on a very bad team last night by the way 🙂

  13. Mr. Palmer Says:

    YEmabella? Dallas ’97 huh?

    I don’t think i’ve heard this show. Sounds intriguing.

  14. GhostDog Says:

    I have yet to enter my code from pre-ordering the box…

    Do the extra tracks offered for the pre-orders show up then? I did not receive the extra tracks with the box itself.

    and argument could be made that Izabella (like a My Soul opener, Rocky Top>Monkey encore, or several other classic nods) is a telltale sign of a good show.

    only ten ever and it includes that austin show (07.26.97), 12.06.97, 12.30.97, and 11.22.97 amongst others.

  18. Guyute711 Says:

    Yeah J’ville is pretty terrible, I needed something positive in my life so it was kinda nice. Nothing but bad shit happening all around me recently. Outside the game it was another really bad day for the pig.

  19. EL Duderino Says:

    12/6 probably is the best Izabella

    I love the old Twist intro’s

  20. tela'smuff Says:

    looking forward to festivus @Stapes. i’ve got a metal pole.

    this W/S BEK is stupid. wow.

  21. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    @palms
    it was austin, not dallas, but it is sweet. bob gullotti on the second drum kit

  22. Mr. Palmer Says:

    thanks T3….Blister in the Sun, huh? Checking the HD to see if i have this one, i don’t think so.

  23. Harry Balzano Says:

    @Jtran

    …gotojam…I feel that in oreder to be a gotojam thae persom considering it would have had to have been at the show that contains the kam.

    No doubt about it Reba 12/31/95. I probably have listened to it 5000 times.

    I listened to it on replay for what seemed like two years straight at work while the boys were on hiatus, not that they hate, us but hi ate us.

    Damn that hi.

  25. Highway Bill Says:

    Sorry, and the kam, for that matter.
