Retro Post: Exploring on the Eighth

8.15.11 - UIC Pavilion (Michael Stein)

Today, I’ll let my blog do my work for me. Here’s a link to last year’s December 8th installment of December jam memoirs, a series of posts in which I tracked the calendar using Phish jams. The intro is below.

Exploring on the Eighth

Today, our December focus shift onto two sprawling excursions that took place on the eighth day of the month in 1995 and 1999. Both selections — Cleveland’s “Tweezer > Kung > Tweezer” and Cumberland County Civic Center’s “Piper” — feature musical explorations that veer far off the beaten path, providing snapshots of the band’s experimental side as seen through the lenses of 1995 and 1999…Read On!

Jam of the Day:

Piper > Dog-Faced Boy” 12.8.99 II

Part of a stellar second set at Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine. Read about it in the article linked above.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: “Jennifer Dances” 12.7.99 II

One of the three December ’99 performances of the much-maligned tune. I’ve always wondered, “What’s not to like?”

  1. Corey Says:

Jennifer does indeed…dance. Then again, so did Lenny Pickett.

  2. garretc Says:

I can’t tell if Miner is being serious or not, but that was the first time I’ve listened to Jennifer Dances, and I definitely don’t mind it at all. It’s not going to be my favorite song, but I wouldn’t be upset to hear it…

  3. Corey Says:

Hmm, @Miner, Piper seems to be Tube and the Boy seems to be Ghost. Am i doing it right? Not going to end my night with Jennifer though.

  4. Willowed Says:

I like a lot of salt in my gravy!

  5. bhizzle Says:

First time hearing that song and I could see why people aren’t the biggest fan of it. Oddly enough, and I know I’ll probably catch shit for saying this, but the styling of Jennifer Dances reminds me alot of the some songs found on the Joy album, hooky pop song meh.

  6. Guyute711 Says:

It’s still weird to see Trey and Mike flip flopped.

  7. mike in austin Says:

    Reggae me!

  8. Luther T. Justice Says:

I’m usually more concerned with the amount of pepper in my gravy, but I guess Jennifer’s good on that.

  9. SillyWilly Says:

    studying is officially underway

    can’t wait for selector!

  10. Guyute711 Says:

  11. SillyWilly Says:

  14. mike in austin Says:

    I’m on 91.7 FM SW.

  15. Selector J Says:

The KVRX stream must not have been reactivated. They turned it off for BMI auditing. Sonsuvbeeyotches.

  16. Selector J Says:

I’ll try to get it activated when our tech guy gets here. Hopefully by 8. Probably closer to 9. Sorry guys.

  17. Guyute711 Says:

    awe man totally bogus

  18. SillyWilly Says:

    No worries, Selector J

    not your fault, man!

and don’t stress out about it if it’s a major pain while you’re trying to run a show, I’ve got plenty of music I can listen to

  19. mike in austin Says:

Let’s get this show on the road!

  20. Guyute711 Says:

So I listened to that War On Drugs album last night with a few other people. First time I could devote some real time to listen and found I enjoyed it a lot more at work when I wasn’t really paying attention. My roommate said,”You don’t like the Cure but you like this?” The answer was not really. A little too synth driven for me.

  21. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

well, darn. I guess that means I have to listen to more from HW-S.

    ::kicks metaphorical rock::

  22. mike in austin Says:

    Jah can do it!

  23. SillyWilly Says:

    Hey TypeIII

    sorry if I’m confused…

but, do you climb? I think I saw sometime you talking about climbing

anyway, the girl I’ve been seeing is taking me to climb this afternoon.

a little nervous. i hate heights. and my shoulders are shit after multiple surgeries.

it sounds fun, though, and I’m going to give it an honest go.

  24. Mr. Palmer Says:

    Morning kids and comrades..

Thought i’d share this. I have some bizarre, yet talented neighbors.

  25. Guyute711 Says:

Listening to Grisman play the Godfather Waltz. I would have thought that song was just some Italian traditional tune. Ha ha
