Retro Post: Exploring on the Eighth
Today, I’ll let my blog do my work for me. Here’s a link to last year’s December 8th installment of December jam memoirs, a series of posts in which I tracked the calendar using Phish jams. The intro is below.
****
Today, our December focus shift onto two sprawling excursions that took place on the eighth day of the month in 1995 and 1999. Both selections — Cleveland’s “Tweezer > Kung > Tweezer” and Cumberland County Civic Center’s “Piper” — feature musical explorations that veer far off the beaten path, providing snapshots of the band’s experimental side as seen through the lenses of 1995 and 1999…Read On!

Jam of the Day:
“Piper > Dog-Faced Boy” 12.8.99 II
Part of a stellar second set at Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine. Read about it in the article linked above.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: “Jennifer Dances” 12.7.99 II
One of the three December ’99 performances of the much-maligned tune. I’ve always wondered, “What’s not to like?”
11.21 Hampton Bag is no slouch
it may not have the cohesiveness of the Halley’s or the extreme peaks of the W-S Gin
but I dig the Bag’s ‘fuzzy dense’ jamming, with some exceptional work from Page (didn’t want to break the spell & check the time)
but my absolute fav moment is when the boys are jamming Ghost and all of a sudden it’s Bag -a beautiful on-a-dime segue that’s oh so buttery smooth
Thanks sumo…had no idea about that Miles Bootleg Series.
I think palmer is right. joe wants that 28th though, cause his fund is gonna double this weekend. 😉
I also love this bag.
9:15 on gets a big woot from me. 9:29 almost sounds like Punch You in The Eye. It’s like they all took a while to gather the troops, but from there on, with Trey’s bluesy soloing, over that driving PYITE beat … greatness.
I hope it doubles. It’s where it needs to be right now, anyway. Money not the problem right now. The health and sanity (unfortunately not hyperbole) of the lady is at a crisis point. Can’t really predict what that will look like in 3 weeks. (3 WEEKS!!!)
Good luck Joe.
Miles Bootleg Series????
Do tell please
Weird, I can’t post the link to Miles Davis’ website which describes the release
just bought my tix to see Mike Gordon this Saturday in Northampton MA
last two Mike shows I caught felt a bit flat for me. At least the Calvin Theatre has excellent acoustics (far better than Pearl Street, also in Northampton, which is where I last saw Mike)
my MSG warm up show
found it
downloading now
Leaving in 15 hours… I should probably think about packing. Been weeks since I have been there.
Whoah, yesterday I was bein a smartass with my in laws who are total Virginia Tech people about how since their football team sucks, they will have to have another shooting to become relevant again.
ouch.
Just saw this…
This Deep House/ Urban Electronic mix is pretty dope. Grab a glo
stick and check it out…

Just wear a grey smock and a coolie hat, and you’ll be set.
MiA, if it is deep house you are looking for, look no further than Derrick Carter. Best dj on earth? Yes.

Technical guitar question from my buddy: what kind of rig/setup is best for a ‘clean’ sound like heard on an old Blue Sky solo? I’m a hack and play a dirty accoustic slop sound mostly so I’m no help
5 days = 2 suits, 5 shirts, 1 jeans, 1 black sweater. Done.
re: CBS fracking story
“The fracking occurred below the level of the drinking water aquifer and close to water wells, the EPA said. Elsewhere, drilling is more remote and fracking occurs much deeper than the level of groundwater that would normally be used.”

Sounds like a poor casing job rather than a problem with the actual fracking. Not really a story if you don’t mention fracking, I guess.
“Fuck faulty well-casing in aquifers!” doesn’t have the same ring to it.
@Palmer, around the 20 min mark of the 12/7/99 Halley’s, Trey starts building a lick to resolve the murky soup, and they transcend into one of my favorite Phish jams and moments, evah! So sick.
Depends who’s lead segment we’re talking about.
Dickey = ’59 Les Paul gold top with Marshall tube amp.
Warren = Soldano head and cabinet with Les Paul custom

Derrick Carter is great. Good rec. Like Miguel Migs too. And Cascade. Yeah, it’s typical, but so am I.

I have an ES-335. Love it. Don’t play it enough though.
Thanks dude. He means dickey, so I guess I have to give him some winners so he can spend the $$$ needed for that.
And some extra for lessons 🙂
’65 Firebird III here one previous owner
’99 C.F. Martin HD-28
All those tube amps rock if you can afford them. The ’66 Fender Vibrolux amp in that video I find to be nice sounding. Do like the Marshall that Dickey uses.
