Three Tweezers On Thursday

8.5.10—The Greek Theatre (Wendy Rogell)

The title says it all. With no further ado, here we go.

12.1.96 II, Los Angelas, CA

A piece that quintessentially represents its place in time—the tail end of Fall 1996— this “Tweezer” from UCLA’s Pauly Pavilion often flies under the radar; but it shouldn’t. Phish had begun to shed its arena rock skin for a far smoother style that would begin to takeover their music, and this metamorphosis is fully on display in this “Tweezer.” A version that came on the last run of tour illustrates how far the band had come since their transformative performance of “Remain in Light” on Halloween. And though the initial jam sequence is swanky and groove-based to the core, this extended jaunt eventually builds into a dark and cacaphonous symphony before floating back to earth via futurisic and percussive interplay and a final, old-school “wind down” ending. A true monster in every sense.

12.16.99 II, Raleigh, NC

This hallowed gem illustrates the drone and dissonant style of the late-’99 era quite well. Creeping out of a post-“Velvet Sea” ambient jam late in the second set, this beast emerged. Mike bushwacked the band’s intitial path with bass grenades as Trey set up layered a pillow of psychedleic sounds. Coming with laid-back leads amidst this murky excusrion, Trey began to command the jam with minimalist authority. Settling into a second segment, the band crawls amidst gorgeous ambient-melodica before ascending slowly into a “Slave-esque” that is as cathartic as music gets. This one touches my heart every time I hear it.

8.11.04 II, Mansfield, MA

Forgotten amidst turbulent times of August ’04 was the last “Tweezer” of the post-hiatus era. Though not super long, this jam certainly packs a hell of punch before segueing smoothly into the real version of “Hold Your Head Up.” An oversized, dark and mechanical groove dominates this excursion which certainly possesses an apocalyptic feel that paralleled the band’s “final run” to Coventry.

@multi – she did a whole blog about her week of Phish on NPR a couple years back. pretty interesting read. she met up with a bunch of fans in Portland. she wasn’t a complete convert, but liked the fans, and gained a new apprecaition for Phish. it was a cool idea i think.

  2. Multbeast Says:

Working my way through her NPR blog phish experiment now. Pretty cool. I like Sleater Kinney. I like Portlandia.

  3. tela'smuff Says:

really liked Sleater Kinney. My buddy swears by her new band. Supposedly pretty good. The more I watch Portlandia, the more I’m attracted to her.

  4. phoammhead Says:

i may need to get back to a mindset of go to dance

  5. Multbeast Says:

Wild Flag is her new band right? I have yet to listen, but it got good reviews. The wife wants me to pick it up for her.

Yep, she’s funny, a musician, and cute. I dig her.

so Phish is going to play Bonnaroo over the weekend of June 7th-10th and then have a fest over June 15-17? interesting if that is indeed how it plays out. Bethel stills seems legit on Memorial Day weekend, so this month of June could be interesting.

  7. phoammhead Says:

^that’ll be three places i want to be

  8. Mr.Miner Says:

    Bethel ain’t happenin’

  9. phoammhead Says:

comon’ miner what about that report!

What I love about Phish most is I got suckered in during a time I was a young idealist non jaded noob.

Do I understand non phans not digging Phish? Of course. Terrible vocals. Not the best song writers IMO. Can be cheesy as all hell. Stingy guitarist that only brings the heat when he feels like it. As a kid a lot of the things that bother me about phish musically now didn’t seem to matter at all. Shit probably even loved bouncing back then.

If I was to hit my first show now. No way I would go back.
But luckily this shit white boy rock band is just ingrained in my childhood DNA. As embarrassed as I am to be a fan there is nothing I can do about it now but get dosed and get down. There is absolutely nothing hip bout digging the boys from Vermont on any level. Maybe in 93-98 in the middle of the jam band explosion but in 2012. not so much.

  11. Mr.Miner Says:

    ^ you’re such a cynical poop gobbler.

  12. phoammhead Says:

    yeah, i’m screwed, too

  13. Mr.Miner Says:

@phoam. pretty sure they will start just before Bonnaroo

  14. poop goblin Says:

I need about 10 years of daily therapy miner. Something I cannot afford nor have the balls for. So for now we just deal.

Believe it or not trying not to be a jaded agro poop gobbler is my top priority these days. Working on it.

  15. phoammhead Says:

    whearrabouts! 🙂

  16. sumodie Says:

What if Bethel was pushed out into late June?

Not saying this likely photoshopped tourdates list is legit but cross out Vegas and it seems to fit the “no phish till ~mid June” word dropped here a few days ago:

  17. poop goblin Says:

Also ya’ll get non puffin poop gobbler during the day.

Much more pleasant starting in about 2 hours.

  18. Mr.Miner Says:

that looks much more realistic minus vegas.

  19. Multbeast Says:

“What I love about Phish most is I got suckered in during a time I was a young idealist non jaded noob.”
Same. Going to a show in 94 in my jr year of HS, already way into the Dead, it just clicked.

  20. Mr.Miner Says:

then you turn to AW 😉

  21. phoammhead Says:

pretty sure i win today, but ya never know

i have heard of bethel later in june . . .no?

  22. BingosBrother Says:

11/2/90 David Bowie awesome Godzilla sandwich!

  23. poop goblin Says:

I guarantee there will be a hot 3 night run over that april 1st weekend cuz I’ve been stoked as all hell for Seun Kuti to come through with the Egypt 80 and that’s the date. How my luck rolls.

  24. sumodie Says:

Pretty sure someone else posted ^that list here already

As for the GW04 Tweezer, once more I’m a blank. Either Coventry destroyed all other tour memories for me that summer or else I just don’t remember shows when completely sober

  25. tela'smuff Says:

i’m not sold on Bethel being a no go. i imagine you have a strong source though Miner. i have zero knowledge. if it’s truly those dates above, then it looks like no Phish for me until DC>Wrigley, and i’m not thrilled for a return to Indiana and the humidity. maybe just hold off West Coast dates, if there is any.
