Three Eras of Tube”

6.6.09 - Great Woods (Graham Lucas)

Today we take a glimpse at three generations of “Tube.” Enjoy. And if you need more “Tubes” to listen to when you are done with this sample size, check out some others here. Have a great Thursday!

7.16.98 II, George, WA

This wide-open funk jam oozes with the sound of the Gorge. Over-sized, chunky bass lines anchor this version as Trey adds all sorts of wah-groove into the mix. Trey then set some loops as Page sculpts the sound alongside him, adding a whole different, cathartic ambiance to the music. Returning to an extended series of slamming, whole-band grooves, this Gorge version has always been one of my go-to favorites

2.22.03 II, Cincinnati, OH

This explosive version kicked off one of the marquee sets of February ‘03’s comeback tour at The Crown in Cincinnati. Both Trey and Page stood out in a jam that moves far beyond anything we’ve heard recently. This furious rendition took over the entire arena, whose roar you can hear in multiple mid-jam peaks. Fishman keeps a driving, cymbal-heavy beat chugging for the duration of this best-of-the-post-hiatus era “Tube.”

6.18.09 I, Burgettstown, PA

Though its Star Lake show was nothing spectacular, this first set “Tube” remains the most significant of the modern era. Page’s takes an extended clav solo as Trey comps him with a diversity of rhythm patterns and pitch-bent notes. Trey then moves on, hitting some high-octave lead lines before the band comes back together in swanky groove and the final verse of the song.

thanks Voopa! Living up in the hills has been tough on my live music intake.

  2. ThePigSong Says:

what kind of clothes do you where to the Symphony?

  3. Mike in Austin Says:

    Patchwork Quilt Tuxedo.

  4. phoammhead Says:

  5. tela'smuff Says:

oh, DTE Bowie, why are you foresaken…

  6. phoammhead Says:

want a report after the show please.

  7. voopa Says:

n00bs clap at the end of movements…wait ’til the end of the piece!

(that’s probably what you meant, but just to clarify…)

  8. Mr palmer Says:

You should definitely dose. Double up actually. What could possibly go wrong?

  9. Multibeast Says:

    Hey plord
Giving another listen to that Eyes now….

  10. Multibeast Says:

My plan for the symphony is to eat a real powerful ganja cookie and a few dranks. Light blue tux, frills.

  11. phoammhead Says:

yes voops . . . that’s what i meant . . . i guess. it’s been a while since i’ve been to the symphony. did see trey and the nashville orchestra a few years back and all rules regarding clapping and jumping up and down and yelling for trey were not through the roof for that one.

  12. phoammhead Says:

^correction rules were through the roof, ie no rules.

  13. phoammhead Says:

trey actually seemed a little embarrassed but appreciative nonetheless and took it all in stride . . . trey is classy no doubt.

  14. Robear Says:

    this is what i need!

    time to start saving pennys’s

  15. ThePigSong Says:

went with nice jeans, laundered white button up (untucked) and coat.

actually read up on the local Symphony “rules” website, and they basically said to wear whatever the fuck you want, unless it’s lots of cologne.

  16. Dr Pronoia Says:

    Thanks for the Seun, AW

  17. ThePigSong Says:

Honestly hope the crowd isn’t too embarrassing.

Hoping I can get a decent recording with my iPhone, pretty sure nothing circulates unless it’s on the DL. If nothing else my recording will definitely put my lady in the “drink mixing” mood on lazy weekend mornings.

  18. Robear Says:

is it the first symphony tonight? where?

  19. Multibeast Says:

‘drink mixing’! Hah. Been a while since i’ve seen that on the board.

  20. Tom Says:

Possible stream link. I am not 100% that it will work, but better then nothing.

  21. RamblinMind Says:

The mere fact that a member of phish is going to be in a building performing music is not reason to disregard all common sense etiquette/decorum for a public event.

i.e. don’t pass out in or outside the venue, and leave the nitrous in the tanks. I’m sure Trey finds that element embarrassing when he’s working with professional musicians in a concert hall.

Pass out at Hands on a Hardbody though, because fuck that

  22. ThePigSong Says:

NPR announced this concert yesterday by saying “Former Phish frontman, Trey Anastasio…”

Did I miss something the last few days?

  23. ThePigSong Says:

Across the street from my house Robear! I can hear the tanks from my living room 😉

  24. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

Holy shit. A stream for symphony trey? We truly are an obsessive breed.

  25. ThePigSong Says:

Wife’s on her way home, time to open a bottle of red and then hopefully find my plastic black shoes.
