Three Eras of Tube”

6.6.09 - Great Woods (Graham Lucas)

Today we take a glimpse at three generations of “Tube.” Enjoy. And if you need more “Tubes” to listen to when you are done with this sample size, check out some others here. Have a great Thursday!

7.16.98 II, George, WA

This wide-open funk jam oozes with the sound of the Gorge. Over-sized, chunky bass lines anchor this version as Trey adds all sorts of wah-groove into the mix. Trey then set some loops as Page sculpts the sound alongside him, adding a whole different, cathartic ambiance to the music. Returning to an extended series of slamming, whole-band grooves, this Gorge version has always been one of my go-to favorites

2.22.03 II, Cincinnati, OH

This explosive version kicked off one of the marquee sets of February ‘03’s comeback tour at The Crown in Cincinnati. Both Trey and Page stood out in a jam that moves far beyond anything we’ve heard recently. This furious rendition took over the entire arena, whose roar you can hear in multiple mid-jam peaks. Fishman keeps a driving, cymbal-heavy beat chugging for the duration of this best-of-the-post-hiatus era “Tube.”

6.18.09 I, Burgettstown, PA

Though its Star Lake show was nothing spectacular, this first set “Tube” remains the most significant of the modern era. Page’s takes an extended clav solo as Trey comps him with a diversity of rhythm patterns and pitch-bent notes. Trey then moves on, hitting some high-octave lead lines before the band comes back together in swanky groove and the final verse of the song.

  4. Guyute711 Says:

Getting the same message HH. We are not cool enough to be on there anymore. Selector has too many hipster fans clogging up the feed.

  5. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I think it would be neat to hear a super old school tube in contrast to these gems.

was just looking at the song history for tube and saw a link to the outtakes from story of the ghost which apparently has a studio version. a couple of dead re-routed links later and I happened upon this treasure trove of downloadable goodness. there’s a ton of phish, but a lot of other intriguing stuff there for dl too…

@Miner: thanks for the tunes. Also the “extra” link doesn’t seem to work.

@SelectorJ: I’m having troubles with getting you up and running. Is this still happening to people?

    Good morning BBers.

  11. Multibeast Says:

I most likely am way late on this, but I heard this morning that phish will play two shows @ the Roo. Have yall heard the same?

    Radiohead abd RHCP also headlining.

Tauthall has some cool stuff on there. I enjoy the Page solo show posted on there when he released his solo album a few years ago. Wish I could have made those Boulder shows.

  13. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

  14. jdub Says:

    I’m sensing a “T” theme this week.

Yeah, I miss the unexpected sideways turn out of some gooey funk.

Maybe a “what happened to Theme?” retrospective coming soon.

  15. jdub Says:

This is your week T3!! Celebrate.

  16. jdub Says:

Come to think of it, MSG Cities offered quite a nice sideways turn out of some gooey funk. They still got it in them.

  17. voopa Says:

The “others here” link has an extra http in it. Fixed:

  18. voopa Says:

    whoops, this one is correct:

  19. HarryHood Says:

    @ guyute

I’m not sure if it’s because I’m on my work computer/network, but I’ve never been able to access Selectors show using the link. I’ve always gotten an error message.

  20. Selector J Says:

Sorry the kvrx tronz is misbehaving. I think this all may be my fault, too.
I asked the IT guy about upgrading the stream from 96kbs to something more 2012-ish… like 128 or higher. He said he’d check it out this morning.
I wonder if he lowered the max listener to accommodate the higher quality stream.
Coincidentally, I was goofing around the other day with a web-based radio/podcast program called Spreaker. I made two 30 min podcasts of Marley tribute stuff that I was planning on playing this morning.
You can listen to them here:

By the way, I really hate Austin Rivers. I’ve never felt physical pain from watching a basketball game before. Every time I think of that last play I feel some tightness in my stomach and a little vertigo. Congrats to the Dookies, though. Way to pull out a win.

  21. phoammhead Says:

i hear you, selector. i feel awful.

  22. Kaveh Says:

@voopa: thanks for the link fix.

@SelectorJ: thanks for the Marley tribute. Got my coffee, now I need some tunes.

  23. phoammhead Says:

    don’t goad the goat

  24. Guyute711 Says:

It was a pretty darn good jv game phoamm. Only game of the year I root for Duke.

  25. Selector J Says:

    @ G711 You’d never say that to Phoam’s face…

… seeing as how Cuse fans are incapable of anything man-to-man.
