Three Eras of Tube”

6.6.09 - Great Woods (Graham Lucas)

Today we take a glimpse at three generations of “Tube.” Enjoy. And if you need more “Tubes” to listen to when you are done with this sample size, check out some others here. Have a great Thursday!

7.16.98 II, George, WA

This wide-open funk jam oozes with the sound of the Gorge. Over-sized, chunky bass lines anchor this version as Trey adds all sorts of wah-groove into the mix. Trey then set some loops as Page sculpts the sound alongside him, adding a whole different, cathartic ambiance to the music. Returning to an extended series of slamming, whole-band grooves, this Gorge version has always been one of my go-to favorites

2.22.03 II, Cincinnati, OH

This explosive version kicked off one of the marquee sets of February ‘03’s comeback tour at The Crown in Cincinnati. Both Trey and Page stood out in a jam that moves far beyond anything we’ve heard recently. This furious rendition took over the entire arena, whose roar you can hear in multiple mid-jam peaks. Fishman keeps a driving, cymbal-heavy beat chugging for the duration of this best-of-the-post-hiatus era “Tube.”

6.18.09 I, Burgettstown, PA

Though its Star Lake show was nothing spectacular, this first set “Tube” remains the most significant of the modern era. Page’s takes an extended clav solo as Trey comps him with a diversity of rhythm patterns and pitch-bent notes. Trey then moves on, hitting some high-octave lead lines before the band comes back together in swanky groove and the final verse of the song.

And sorry to hijak but not sure how many of you are familiar with the situation in Angola right now where Pat Alloco and his son are being held hostage by local authorities.

They were the promoters for a NYE concert featuring Nas in Africa, Nas didn’t show and now these 2 have been held hostage for over 40 days. Please take a look here, write Nas on his Twitter, whatever you can do. This guy Pat is a good friend of my friend and want to see them return home.

my fav pinner tubes from 3.0 def AC, Blossom, and 1/1 MSG

was thinking bout hitting bonaroo after digging a bunch of the bands in the rumored line up but then decided that Paul Simon doing Graceland (one of my least fav albums of all time by one of my least fav musicians) was a sign from God my old ass doesn’t need to hang out in Tennessee with a bunch of 12 year olds.

  10. Guyute711 Says:

Damn, why does everybody have to play Thursday in my town.
Yeah phoamm they did look good right up until it mattered.
Don’t mess with the zone Selector, 4 other guys will have my back when I tease phoamm in person. 🙂

  11. tela'smuff Says:

Cincy Tube is indeed money. As is the Gin that follows.

I really disliked that Pittsburgh show, but good call on the Tube. That was maybe the best part of the show.

  12. Kaveh Says:

@Robear that looks like a sweet tour to go on. Too bad nothing in MN anytime soon, but I’ll let my friends in Crested Butte know that they should go check them out.

  13. phoammhead Says:

let’s face it duke pulled that one outta their asses . . . fuck!

  14. Robear Says:

Where’s the love for Minnesnowta?! I’ll pass that along @Kaveh

  15. albert walker Says:

Robear in CHicago they did a split bill so they could play the Park West which is a bit larger than most their venues

couldn’t go cuz I didn’t even want to be in the same room as fans of the other band which is associated with those ass hats UM. pissed it wasn’t just Greensky. would have loved to go.

Strange Arrangement was the other band. checked a bit of their shit. very jammy, very white, and very cheezy.
I didn’t even know there were still jam bands out there.

  16. albert walker Says:

funny Mr. Vegas that had the massive dancehall hit Heads High is doing some small acoustic gigs where he has dropped toasting for some old school vocal based reggae stylings

    pretty slick

  17. Robear Says:

damn Albert. Looked at flights yesterday. Wish I could come out for Seun and Fela! Flights a bit too high. Will keep checking.

If I’m going to sit through a musical, it will be about an extremely influential dead African musician, not some hands on a hard body vanilla ice cream garbo.

  18. albert walker Says:

    sounds good Robear

just finished our remodel project. new kitchen master bedroom and both bathrooms done.

    ready for some visitors.

def stoked for the Kuti weekend. Sean was posting some killer photos on twitter yesterday of a concert in Nigeria he played at yesterday protesting the fuel subsidy removals in NIgeria.

  19. tela'smuff Says:

not sure if anybody here has some ’09 Phish available but i’m trying to fill in some blanks for summer ’09 and the holiday run. i only have 12/30/09, need the rest. i could do a trade.

  20. albert walker Says:

I hear there may be a tweezer from 12/29/09 worth spinning

  21. halcyon Says:

I wish Seun would come through CO.

I got some 09 Tela’s. Mainly Aud’s. Do have Fest 8 via Live Phish and a few others.

Rumor of iPad 3 in early March …. Might have to jump on this, or then order a refurb’d iPad2 for cheap.

tough to pick a best Light of 3.0 when faced with the Greek and Tahoe versions. totally two different animals. i like the space of the Greek Light, but love that storage groove of the Tahoe Light. Leaning towards Tahoe.
