Three Eras of Tube”

6.6.09 - Great Woods (Graham Lucas)

Today we take a glimpse at three generations of “Tube.” Enjoy. And if you need more “Tubes” to listen to when you are done with this sample size, check out some others here. Have a great Thursday!

7.16.98 II, George, WA

This wide-open funk jam oozes with the sound of the Gorge. Over-sized, chunky bass lines anchor this version as Trey adds all sorts of wah-groove into the mix. Trey then set some loops as Page sculpts the sound alongside him, adding a whole different, cathartic ambiance to the music. Returning to an extended series of slamming, whole-band grooves, this Gorge version has always been one of my go-to favorites

2.22.03 II, Cincinnati, OH

This explosive version kicked off one of the marquee sets of February ‘03’s comeback tour at The Crown in Cincinnati. Both Trey and Page stood out in a jam that moves far beyond anything we’ve heard recently. This furious rendition took over the entire arena, whose roar you can hear in multiple mid-jam peaks. Fishman keeps a driving, cymbal-heavy beat chugging for the duration of this best-of-the-post-hiatus era “Tube.”

6.18.09 I, Burgettstown, PA

Though its Star Lake show was nothing spectacular, this first set “Tube” remains the most significant of the modern era. Page’s takes an extended clav solo as Trey comps him with a diversity of rhythm patterns and pitch-bent notes. Trey then moves on, hitting some high-octave lead lines before the band comes back together in swanky groove and the final verse of the song.

Phish likes MIA. Good in 2003 too.

  2. kayatosh Says:

yep. these buy the dip patterns are becoming almost too predictable. that’s why going long seems more and more risky by the day.

it needs to break out soon. rally feels like an old lady, struggling to get up the stairs. but she ain’t fallin, not yet at least.

I’m out of the longs bought around 11. done for the day.

iran gearing up to hide their nukes in a mtn. scares me. isr. may blink and bomb the crap out of them. if so, mrkt. dislocation.

    herbz and a walk

could def be upside especially if there is some kind of Greece kick the can deal announced but EUR at 1.33 looking like a good short to hedge against US long positions.

I usually use this EUO which is double the inverse of the EUR. will go up 2X the move down in the euro.

buying twice that amount of GLD is a trade I’ve had on before I dig too. that way you are 1×1 long gold in euros.

db poweramp is great. I didn’t even know it converts SHNs.

@Miner email me if you’re interested in receiving it.

  7. kayatosh Says:

thanks, aw. like the EUO idea.

IWM rally has been potent since Dec. and dips have been bought. It wants to take 83 for good and make a run on 85. However, support has been getting lower over the past few days (lower lows), and it got sold at $83 yesterday and today. consolidation before next leg up or topping?

probably the former, but little edge there. of course, i’m a recovering bear and not used to joining the melt up on razor thin vol. game. got sliced up betting against it for the past few weeks.

  8. kayatosh Says:

The mrkt. vibe seems to be ride this rally but be prepared to bail. short term = gangbusters. longer term = look out.

  9. albert walker Says:

    you nailed it Kaya

basically I’m buying small positions in names I would be fine doubling or even tripling down on if they go down 25%

without having the cash on the sidelines ready to buy on a big dip I’d feel like I’m picking up pennies on the highway

much more downside potential than upside here but it’s hard to fight the low volume tape especially when US data looks pretty decent, the 30 year isn’t yielding shit, and you know the bearded one is ready to print.

  10. albert walker Says:

even dr doom turned bullish. kinda.

he feels rally has legs near term but will finish at S&P 1300

    I saw that re. Roubini.

right now feels uncomfortable on both sides of the trade.

so much debt reduction needs to be done. can’t be positive for equities intermediate to long term.

  12. albert walker Says:

Seun Kuti full tour dates. must see.

  13. albert walker Says:

I agree Kaya. the more austerity starts to kick in over across the pond the more likely I am to start looking at short and lightening up long

near term though I really feel with rates low and the fed on hold through 2014 he’s forcing hands into stocks as long as the data looks OK

if the data looks even better than OK it will be off the races.

    2H2012 though I’m a bit scared.

  14. halcyon Says:

w/ some Colorado Dates! Now all I need is for the baby to come 2 weeks early and I can hit one of these shows 😕

“picking up pennies on the highway”

this expression always makes me chuckle, but I prefer the imagery of this variant: picking up pennies in front of a steamroller.

Truly well done, a beautiful piece.

    Oh.
    And Phish….,
    Please play Guelah.

  19. GhostDog Says:

    @audio quality vbr…

I was curious about how vbr compares with a FLAC or AAC file with a higher bit rate. ie… when importing the hampton box to itunes, it stores these files as lower bit rate vbr. Is this of lesser quality than the higher bit AAC if downloaded? A bit confusing.

Also, understanding that the higher bit rate (kbps) brings higher quality, what does the sample rate indicate? 16 bits for example. This is FLAC16 v. 24? Obv the 24 is greater quality?

Pardon my ignorance but if somebody could enlighten me in regards to this it would be greatly appreciated.

  20. GhostDog Says:

Oh yeah. I second Neemor here Miner.

Great piece of work with your book. It has been a great enjoyment and an inspiration to listen back on some rad music that had not been spun in a while. Love the color photos and section arrangement as well.

  21. kayatosh Says:

yes, the Book is way cool. I have only scratched the surface.
