TTFF: Phish2k—Summer Tour

10.23.2010 (Dave Lavery)

The Summer of 2000—moving from Tokyo, Japan to Columbus, Ohio—represented Phish’s last true push of creative music. Though the band’s playing in Japan was on another level than in the states, the band, nonetheless, cranked through a solid summer tour—their last until 2003. Once the fall came, Phish shows turned less consistently creative, and standout jams came less frequently as the band moved towards hiatus. Today’s playlist features some of the tour’s lesser known jams to go along with a couple fan favorites, all arranged chronologically as they came in the Summer of 2000. Enjoy ten more tunes as the wait for summer dates continues!

Piper” 6.10.00 I, Tokyo, JP

The only “Piper” of Japan happened in a big way in the first set of Tokyo’s second show.

Theme -> Dog Faced Boy” 6.16.00 II, Osaka, JP

This unfinished “Theme” followed a massive “Runaway Jim” (featured last week) in the band’s final show in the far east.

Bathtub Gin” 6.28.00 I, Holmdel, NJ

A spectacular and triumphant version that Trey leads to the mountaintop.

Birds -> Catapult > Heavy Things” 6.29.00 II, Holmdel, NJ

Phish dropped this stellar piece of improv to open the final set of PNC’s two night stand. The dark and twisted “Birds” jam has hints of Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” laced throughout .

Ghost” 7.1.00 II, Hartford, CT

This scorching, second-set closing “Ghost” snuck in the door at the last minute to highlight the show.

Limb by Limb -> 2001” 7.6.00 II, Toronto, ON

A dark horse combo that got things moving after setbreak in a quick stop north of the border.

Split Open and Melt” 7.7.00 II, Burgettstown, PA

Though not with the unbridled fury of 1994, Phish could still rip a serious “Melt” in 2000. Can they still?

Mike’s Song” 7.14.00 II, Columbus, OH

A driving and sinister jam transforms into beauty, representing one of the last—if not the final—versions of “Mike’s” with two jams.

Down With Disease -> WMMGW” 7.15.00 II, Columbus, OH

Summer’s dramatic “farewell jam” came at the top of the second set, while sliding smoothly and unexpectedly into “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

Rupp Gin IS stellar. Was diving head first into it the other day…SBD can be found on the “Road to Vegas” compilation. ’96?

  8. bhizzle Says:

Everyone talks about the Riverport Gin too…date please…and has Miner ever dropped it on the site so that I may hear?

Nice selections here Miner. Maybe you could post a Theme From the bottom Thursday or something. I don’t think you have ever posted the 2/25/03 Theme, but I think it deserves a post, especially since we have been exploring 2.0 material lately. Thanks.

on the way to work i found myself earnestly singing “the saaaacred creed will be youuurs” with msg 95 nye forbins…it’s phish’s little joke that i will seriously sing such wacko lyrics…one of my fave tunes and was really grateful to get one at UIC…my previous forbins was townshend july 91! i was always trying to get another.

and 2000 for me was lean…rcmh, pnc and columbus but i’ll always remember renting the pontiac santa fe mini van with Chris and James and rolling west at nite straight thru to columbus…leaving nyc listening to Farmhouse…getting to the hotel…waffle house…finding a back road into the venue both nites…that killer rainstorm that stopped S1 the first nite. going stealth into the pav. thanks for calling these Polaris tunes out Miner…underrated!

that Spectrum 03 one is in there

  16. gavinsdad Says:

@st8 – always amazes me that with phish i can really be “on any given nite” seeing as how i went the nite before to the BB king show 2/24/03 and got a meh show and then the next show/nite had gems. guess that’s why touring is the answer.

  17. Mike in Austin Says:

The 7/3/00 Camden Gin is fantastic too. Dark horse overshadowed by the Holmdel Gin

    Back to back great Gins.

  18. The Flesh Says:

    Need Phish Dates!!!!!!!

  19. Jtran Says:

    Morning ‘rades

Don’t know that I’d ever heard Trey change the speed of a loop like that Catapault > Heavy Things segue. Didn’t actually know that was possible.

  20. st8 of mind Says:

@ Gavin Yea, I hit up Chicago through Nassau on that tour, and I really liked the Philly show. I agree, that BB King show was not very good, except for the Twist.

    Thanks Type III!

  21. El Duderino Says:

    Polaris 2 was the phunk!

Fell in love with a very beautiful woman from W. Palm Beach that night-WOW!

  22. gavinsdad Says:

    you will soon hear about

    peaking lights
    kindness
    john talabot
    julia holter

  23. Jtran Says:

“my previous forbins was townshend july 91!”

Wow GD, that’s pretty cool. I know we’re not all song chasers here but that’s awesome.

  24. gavinsdad Says:

@jtran – at one point, since i didn’t read my stats close enough, i was under the impression i hadn’t caught one…i remember wanting to bring a sign to pnc 99 or 00 that said “forbins = 100; me = 0″ cause i had front row one of those nites…my only front row…and no i didn’t do the sign it was just a thought. i dont really have another song i chase per se but i’d like to get Saw It Again or WTU this summer.

  25. bhizzle Says:

Thanks for the link GDad, however work filter has classified that site as pornography(?). But I got those KP sbds and will do some searching when I get home….dependent on honeydo list.

Good jam this Holmdel Gin, but not blown away by it.

Getting back to the Road to Vegas disc..the Tweezer on it is decent with Perrazo dropping some beats over the top.
