TTFF: Phish2k—Summer Tour

10.23.2010 (Dave Lavery)

The Summer of 2000—moving from Tokyo, Japan to Columbus, Ohio—represented Phish’s last true push of creative music. Though the band’s playing in Japan was on another level than in the states, the band, nonetheless, cranked through a solid summer tour—their last until 2003. Once the fall came, Phish shows turned less consistently creative, and standout jams came less frequently as the band moved towards hiatus. Today’s playlist features some of the tour’s lesser known jams to go along with a couple fan favorites, all arranged chronologically as they came in the Summer of 2000. Enjoy ten more tunes as the wait for summer dates continues!

Piper” 6.10.00 I, Tokyo, JP

The only “Piper” of Japan happened in a big way in the first set of Tokyo’s second show.

Theme -> Dog Faced Boy” 6.16.00 II, Osaka, JP

This unfinished “Theme” followed a massive “Runaway Jim” (featured last week) in the band’s final show in the far east.

Bathtub Gin” 6.28.00 I, Holmdel, NJ

A spectacular and triumphant version that Trey leads to the mountaintop.

Birds -> Catapult > Heavy Things” 6.29.00 II, Holmdel, NJ

Phish dropped this stellar piece of improv to open the final set of PNC’s two night stand. The dark and twisted “Birds” jam has hints of Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” laced throughout .

Ghost” 7.1.00 II, Hartford, CT

This scorching, second-set closing “Ghost” snuck in the door at the last minute to highlight the show.

Limb by Limb -> 2001” 7.6.00 II, Toronto, ON

A dark horse combo that got things moving after setbreak in a quick stop north of the border.

Split Open and Melt” 7.7.00 II, Burgettstown, PA

Though not with the unbridled fury of 1994, Phish could still rip a serious “Melt” in 2000. Can they still?

***

Mike’s Song” 7.14.00 II, Columbus, OH

A driving and sinister jam transforms into beauty, representing one of the last—if not the final—versions of “Mike’s” with two jams.

Down With Disease -> WMMGW” 7.15.00 II, Columbus, OH

Summer’s dramatic “farewell jam” came at the top of the second set, while sliding smoothly and unexpectedly into “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

    don’t forget Jeff Chimenti.

also love that venue. no security whatsoever. everybody puffin, GA, never once saw anybody get hasseled. barely a pat down. the guy tickeled me (kind of weird) and apologized for having to do his job.

Show sounded great Tela’s. Some friends were in attendance as well, and they spoke just as highly of the show as you did. Wish I wasn’t working nights this weekend, otherwise would have been all over those shows. Why are all the fun activities scheduled when I work nights!!!

  6. Robear Says:

Miner, these jams are killing me dog.

I admit, I rarely spin all your tunes……trying to keep the love and fresh perspective for 3.0.

Since MehSG, been checking most of them. It’s going to be hard for this West Coastphan to Keep spending so much money to see this band. I can spend a week in Hawaii, and spin the ::old:: tapes.

  7. Robear Says:

Case in point, this ‘Tweezer’ is too much!

  8. Wilson123 Says:

It’s not that the jams aren’t as good in 3.0, it’s that they are so few and far between. They need to start dropping bombs every night like they used to.

  9. sumodie Says:

  12. albert walker Says:

    may check it out

  13. tela'smuff Says:

Jtran, just the shows at Phils new place, which if i knew Phish was going to be stingy with jams, i’d go to over Phish tour. i think this run of 3 shows could be looked back on with some high praise. mazing Phil has the kind of energy to play at such a high level still.

“Miner, these jams are killing me dog.”

This is my favorite part of the day. To be slayed by Phish, even a recording of Phish, that sounds like shit, can elevate me for the whole day.

This Piper does NOT sound like shit.

Miner’s constant posts remind me why this band is without a doubt is/was the greatest band in the world and deserves every bit of the praise/analysis and critique bestowed on it.

  15. Mr. Palmer Says:

I have a show somewhere on my HD of Denson doing that recently. Sounded pretty cool.

  16. Mike in Austin Says:

Dates DAMMIT! Or I’m going to Hawaii to watch whales. I’m serious Trey. I’ll do it. I’ve vacationed without you. I did it once. I’ll do it again.

  17. Mr. Palmer Says:

Just watched the official video of the Bethel Numberline.

Now i’m jonesing for dates / shows..

  18. Luther T. Justice Says:

Thanks for the P&F review @tela. Can’t wait to listen to that one. I can only hope Furthur will become his side project & P&F his main vehicle.

    here’s a decent review.

Jackie’s vocals on Magic Bus were great. i admit to not having ever given that kid much of a chance, mostly for superficial reasons, but he won me over big time last night. it was nice seeing that the spirit of GD music has safely been passed to people like Russo and Greene.

  20. gavinsdad Says:

thanks for the thoughts @Tela – phil w sco/warren at Mtn Jam 08 was one of my fave of his line-ups over the years and i’ve seen many. i really wanted to go out for those but knew i couldn’t pull it off. hope you get more of the same next show.

  21. garretc Says:

Matrix available at etree for last night’s P&F. First source up, it looks like.

  24. bhizzle Says:
