Five Favorites From Summer ’95

Jones Beach — Summer '95

Tweezer” 6.14 II, Memphis, TN

The Mud Island “Tweezer,” a classic and personal favorite that—I feel—is captivating for the entire 50 minutes.

Runaway Jim -> Free” 6.15 II, Raleigh, NC

Phish took this doggie a long way from home in Walnut Creek, another classic rendition.

David Bowie” 6.24 II, Philadelphia, PA

In a summer that contained countless standout “Bowies,” this version from the Mann Music Center is among the elite.

Down With Disease -> Free” 6.26 II, S. Springs, NY

One of the finest sequences of music from a spectacular summer—a two-pronged, psychedelic monstrosity.

Stash” 6.17 II, Gainesville, VA

A mind-numbing version from that closed the first set on the fifth night of a five night run. And it wound up being the highlight of the show.

EPIC bowie. Love the Fishman screaming at the end. Summer 95 is just pure psychedelic energy. Such an underrated and under appreciated tour IMO.

    Thanks again Miner!

  2. Mr.Miner Says:

yeah, Mann Bowie is one of my favorites..band is manipulating music like a tangible entity in that jam

  3. Mr. Palmer Says:

I liked that Tweezer. Didn’t get bored at all. What a beast.

That Bowie…wow. only one of these i caught. Dirty.

This Stash is going places as well. ’95 was a sick Stash year.

  4. PrinceNabby Says:

My only 95 show was 5.31.95 (Lowell). A weird but memorably good gig.

With luck I can get to Woost and Spac, assuming those dates hold.

Unless I quit my job in a fit of pique. Then it might be full time couch terr.

So you tell me: if your job told you you keep your same salary; but you move way off the corp ladder, like, definitely in a box in the corner; and you are asked to work only on the complicated/late/urgent yet interesting kinds of work; AND they gave your old title and it’s career track to some new guy for purely political reasons and admitted as much…

Do you bear down and keep slogging? Or run away shooting backwards? I want to believe that this is a good deal but my ego is not cooperating. “Here, have less responsibility and zero room for advancement in exchange for harder but more consistently compelling work.” Can’t shake the feeling it’s a devil’s bargain.

Whinge whinge. This Tweezer is helping.

    @Jtran

I’ll reserve one of those spots for west coast tour, if your taking applications already! I’m a highly qualified shotgun rider as well as experienced at post-show lifted driving, if it comes to that!

Should I be preparing resume/cover letter and all that?

  7. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    diggin this bowie!

Only caught the REd Rocks shows summer 95.

  8. halcyon Says:

Thanks for these tunes Miner. Providing a much needed antidote.

    Good Friday folks!

  9. Mike in Austin Says:

plord, that exactly happened to me. Very stressful time in my life, but one I was already starting to embrace for the benefit of getting off of the road. Losing a high profile position can be good and bad.

mikeinaustinbb @ geezmail if you wanna rap.

  10. Phamily Berzerker Says:

I went to Europe days after those shows and was swimming in a pond in Germany whne I heard about Jerry’s death.

After an hour of mourning, I remarked that there would be major canges in the phish scene as a result. Not a big fan of that whole externally focused hippy culture.

  11. garretc Says:

Oh my god… I said “your” instead of “you’re”…

Who will carry out the mercy killing? I clearly no longer deserve to live…

  12. PrinceNabby Says:

@Phamily Berzerker. Hmmm. What do you mean by “externally focused”?

  13. voopa Says:

plord, my work responsibilities got turned on end a few months ago…I was in shock and pissed off for a long time, but came around to the realization that this is still the best gig around for me right now. Just consider how many people can’t find work right now.

Summer ’95 I was jealous, watching setlists roll across my screen nightly. Did the first 4 of Fall tour, Sac>SD>LA>Shoreline…a very memorable swing, what I remember of it 😉

Posted here a few weeks ago: Raw footage of MTV covering the LA Greek ’95 show…such a different era. The lot interviews are classic, even better is the Bag opener.

  14. voopa Says:

    That’s it, garret’s out. Shotgun!

  15. Jtran Says:

    garret

yes. I think you should be able to get in though, you have great related experience

  16. Mr. Palmer Says:

Disease->Free from Spac ’95. This was released on a live bait last year i believe. Holy grail phish right there.

Think i’m locked in for last 5 nights of proposed Leg 1 2012 Phish tour. Wife loves Saratoga and we had a fun time in ’10. Very kid friendly also. Website says all children under 12 get in free ( lawn ). Thinking about introducing 7 year old.

  17. phoammhead Says:

what happened to charlotte? no charlotte messes up my circuit

  18. Kaveh Says:

Just found these: MSG run all proShot, uploaded by this user:

Giving my favorite night a spin right now.

  19. Robear Says:

first of all, I’m moving to Washington if possible:

    http://www.sonshineo.com/upcoming-washngton-farmers-markets.html

second, the abstract, formless psychedelic nature of this ‘Bowie’ is the addictive factor that kept me coming back.

  20. garretc Says:

Skipping straight to Axilla, eh Kaveh?

    And who could blame you!

Nice Jtran, I like to think I’m a leader in my field, so this should be a good fit

  22. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    @ prince nabby

Anything where a comparison is intergral to a acceptance system and minor variances lead to judgement. seeking the differences vs. similarities

i.e how many dead shows one saw prior to ’91 prior to ’87 prior to ’95 How many tie-dyed articles of clothing.

Truth be told If you refer to yourself as a hippy, I tend to disregard that label and look deeper for a real connection that matters on a personal level.

    Likely no clearer anyhow.

Not a fan of labels in general.

  23. Kaveh Says:

Skipping straight to Axilla, eh Kaveh?

    ^ You got me…red handed.

  24. Kevin Says:

SPAC DWD is the goods. I hadn’t listened to it for years — dear God.

  25. PrinceNabby Says:

    @ Phamily Berzerker

Thanks. That made complete sense to me, and I share your sentiment too, for the most part. As Oscar Wilde said: “comparisons are odious.”
