Five Favorites From Summer ’95

Jones Beach — Summer '95

Tweezer” 6.14 II, Memphis, TN

The Mud Island “Tweezer,” a classic and personal favorite that—I feel—is captivating for the entire 50 minutes.

Runaway Jim -> Free” 6.15 II, Raleigh, NC

Phish took this doggie a long way from home in Walnut Creek, another classic rendition.

David Bowie” 6.24 II, Philadelphia, PA

In a summer that contained countless standout “Bowies,” this version from the Mann Music Center is among the elite.

Down With Disease -> Free” 6.26 II, S. Springs, NY

One of the finest sequences of music from a spectacular summer—a two-pronged, psychedelic monstrosity.

Stash” 6.17 II, Gainesville, VA

A mind-numbing version from that closed the first set on the fifth night of a five night run. And it wound up being the highlight of the show.

I know Miner already said those west coast dates are no good, but Cuthbert would be sick, talk about an intimate venue… Wonder how the tickets would shake out, it’s only like 7000, but it’s way out in Eugene…

CK5 would do wonders lighting up the trees behind the backless band shell though, that’s for sure! But I don’t think the entire Phish lighting rig would fit under that shell…

Anyways, just pointless speculation! Don’t mind me

If this is true, I’m going to be so fucking broke:

6/16 Bader Field, Atlantic City, NJ
6/17 Bader Field, Atlantic City, NJ
6/19 nTelos Wireless Pavilion, Portsmouth, VA

  3. Mr. Palmer Says:

I hope they play Oregon. Those folks deserve some Phish. The Cuthbert is a great little venue. Heard great things.

Is the Portland Meadows still around?

  4. Guyute711 Says:

So weird watching that old video. Everybody is all hippied up and young. Now some of those folks are lawyers or dead.

  5. Robear Says:

    LIstening to this ‘Bowie’,

I always thought Phish had the crazy outro jams on songs like ‘Bowie, DWD, Split’, to remind you of what song they had just been playing. Now, we rarely have time to forget.

  6. Robear Says:

come on with the Cuthbert Theatre talk.

  7. Phamily Berzerker Says:

Comparisons are one of the best ways to get upset about many things one can do nothing about.

It is nearly impossible succesfullly to drive forward while looking exclusively in the rear-view mirror.

’95 roll call..Summer between Fresh and Soph year college.

Went to some Phish shows. Dosed.

Recall a particularly good run of GW>Sugarbush. Tons of peeps just walked around the base of the mountain and got in for free. Great open air fun.

I love the setlists of this time period. So innocuous looking but hiding such potency.

  9. Robear Says:

5 minutes into the DWD…..”.the galloping across the universe sound “

  10. garretc Says:

    Oh yeah, ’95 roll call?

    4 years old.

So I only hit about half the shows. What’re you gonna do? People just don’t believe that you’re selling headed on lot at 4, couldn’t fund the rest of my tour…

  11. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I don’t think I want to know what “selling headed” means 😮

  12. garretc Says:

Jeepers, that’s what I get for phone posting…

I can’t believe Steve Jobs didn’t fight to have “headies” included in the recognized word list…

  13. Guyute711 Says:

John Norris has always been a douche.

  14. Selector J Says:

    Thanks for the tunes, @Miner.
High-powered ’94 jams make any Friday a little bit better.

  15. Selector J Says:

D’oh. High-powered ’95 jams make any Friday a little bit better.

    You knew what I meant.

  16. Robear Says:

how they get from dwd to free is a thing of organic beauty

  17. Phamily Berzerker Says:

If garret gets the boot, I may be able to commit to dashboard time and I am awesome, more awesomer than most when I am behind the wheel.

I also speak cop talk fluently and look the part of someone with a security clearance.

    other qualifications on inquiry only

  18. Robear Says:

    wow, ‘Free’, so sublime here……..

  19. Robear Says:

    a day of freaky jams

  20. garretc Says:

Jeez, I have two (just two!) phone-induced typos in one day and all of a sudden people are scrambling to be the first to step over my vulture-pecked carcass for a potential seat in Jtran’s car?

Y’all are ruthless. Where are your scruples?

(Yes, I doubled checked this post for both spelling AND grammar, thank you very much)

  21. voopa Says:

Yep, Poratland Meadows is still there. Anyone remember the car fire in the vendor lot during soundcheck in ’99?

  22. voopa Says:

Oops, still only half as many typos as garret (so far).

  23. dusty Says:

I loved the ventura ’97 Bowie, but the venue was wack. Race car track with stage and stack super high. Sound from the “floor” was horrible. Lucky we got higher for second set. Nice being by the beach and have a 3 footer in the show.

  24. bhizzle Says:

anyone subscribe to GD’s Dave’s Picks? If so, have you received the first installment?

  25. albert walker Says:

    crazy Dusty

I do remember too much dust and I lost a contact which is always fun spun but I loved the small all GA feel

don’t remember sound issues either but it may have been that BOwie > cities > Bowie just blinded me

like I said no memories of youth really but I thought the little venue on the beach made for a great venue.
