TTFF: The Venues of 2012

6.10.11—Camden, NJ (Graham Lucas)

With the announcement of dates, a new excitement is in the air. Phish is, once again, within reach, even if its three plus months away. But in early anticipation of Summer 2012, today’s playlist is comprised of selections from venues that the band will play this summer. Enjoy the multi-era’d retrospective as we fade into the first weekend of March.

Cities -> Good Times Bad Times” 8.10.97 II, Noblesville, IN

The centerpiece of my favorite show ever played at Deer Creek.

Disease -> What’s the Use?” 8.14.10 II, East Troy, WI

A modern-day classic from Alpine Valley 2010, already commemorated on DVD.

Number Line” 6.12.10 II, Cuyahoga Falls, OH

A sinister jam from the second show of tour at Blossom.

Tweezer” 12.28.95 II, Worcester, MA

Phish dropped this big-time “Tweezer” at The Centrum on the opening night of New Year’s Run ’95.

Gumbo” 8.13.97 II, Burgettstown, PA

This version from Star Lake is my favorite “Gumbo” of all time.

It’s Ice”  9.20.00 II, Cincinatti, OH

An out-of-nowhere plunge into psychedelic depths at Riverbend on Phish’s final tour before hiatus.

Sand” 6.19.11 II, Portsmouth, VA

To know this “Sand” is to love it. Every time I listen to this version from nTelos, I like it more and more. Trey absolutely destroys this piece in the context of a whole-band exchange. In my opinion, its the best version of an impressive year of “Sands.”

Reba” 6.2.09 I, Wantagh, NY

Phish dropped this gorgeous “Reba” in the early-evening at Jones Beach on the second night of 2009’s first tour.

Kill Devil Falls > Free” 6.12.09, Manchester, TN

This jam highlighted Phish’s late-night slot at Bonnaroo—the first of two performances.

Walls > Bowie” 6.19.04 I, Saratoga Springs, NY

The otherworldly second set of this SPAC show has always overshadowed this demonic combo from the first.

No more helpless feeling than when you kid is really sick.

  2. joemeg Says:

I think so Mr. P. We were thinking the same thing. I’ve done all the 3.0 JB shows coming East to West, and it is much better.

That sounds great to carpool or whatever. Now hopefully I can just convince someone else in my family to babysit so Meg can hit at least one of the shows. I have a lot of brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews, so hopefully one of them will be dumb (ahem,I mean nice) enough to watch the little rugrats for me.

  3. Dr Pronoia Says:

Glad the BB kiddos are OK

Quinn turns 1 tomorrow. Feels like a monumental accomplishment getting him there – proudest achievement of my life so far

Mr p – I may be heading to at least 1 of the jB shows from EH. I’ll keep you posted

  4. Dr Pronoia Says:

^^ in the exact same situation joemeg

  5. joemeg Says:

nice, I see the beginnings of a carpool

“It’s not the band’s fault u do too many drugs and expect a 30+ minute tweezer, mikes or Gamehendge for every show u make it too…
U need a delorian that goes 88 miles per hour, or u need to chill the fuk out and read the Fukin book”

    this kid cracked me up.

first of all most of us dig L and herbs at shows both of which aren’t drugs. if you want to bitch at peeps taking drugs go talk to the mawl heads.

also if you ever took L you’d know gamehendge is the last set we want to hear all spun. story time is for the custies.

third I made the same lame delorean joke the day before so either I have the exact same sense of humor as this tool or he’s stealing my already terrible material

    only on the internet

    laterz kids
    markets been fun this week

  7. poop goblin Says:

    oh ya

    and great news GD!

  9. alf Says:

sounds like something i read about once on christwire

  10. Multibeast Says:

Great call on those DC picks. My crew and I had no idea that was a smashing pumpkins song whilew they were playing it.

  11. voopa Says:

Thanks T3, haven’t figured it out yet, gotta scoot to work. Looks like that site’ll have it tho.

  12. Corey Says:

Great to hear the kids are alright, @GD and TIII. And @Dr. P, wow! It’s been a year. I (we all, I’m sure) remember the build up. Amazing how quick the months go by. Getting ready to take that plunge into creation very, very soon.

  13. ae Says:

I may be able to help with car pool from NYC/Brooklyn to JB. Also possible I stay out there at a friends in between…

Happy Friday peeps. Glad to be through this week, with some struggles and some shows to look forward to.

  14. Robear Says:

Miner! Late night before I went to bed, I almost posted:

“Tomorrow, Miner will highlight this summers venues by dropping the 8/10/97 DC ‘Cities’ on us”

Glad I didn’t post on the same page as TrollDumb.

I agree with one thing. In general, all Phish shows make the world a better place, even when I leave less than satiated.

  15. Robear Says:

    Way to stay strong, dad’s.

Skip SPAC for a class reunion?! And you live close? Really, who IS this Corey guy?

  16. sumodie Says:

    ^ what Robear said

  17. sumodie Says:

    I went to my 20th reunion….meh

Besides, from what I understand Phish at SPAC is good for creation

  18. Jtran Says:

This Gumbo is great. Don’t believe I’ve heard this one.

Mellow, laid back are words I’d use to describe it.

  19. Corey Says:

@Robear, I know, I know. But, I missed the 10yr anniv. b/c I was performing/touring in Japan. I have a lot of old friends I’d like to reconnect with. High school was full of music, soccer and girls…a lot of fun for me.

The clarinet concert is a must, as I have several groups to lead and it looks like it’s my last hurrah before moving ‘cross the pond. I’m less torn about the reunion, but moving overseas and all…not sure I’ll fly back for one later on. And, I believe PHiSH has Europe up their sleeves in the future.

  20. Kaveh Says:

Morning BBers! @Miner…thanks for the tunes today. Great choices…looking forward to going through them.

Also; just listen to it on the bus: the Sand from the Gorge, night II, is very good as well. (Tweezer -> Caspian -> Sand -> Tweezer).

  21. Robear Says:

This Cities may be the one jam I know of that I most wish I caught live. Can phreeDim get a line on a time machine?

  22. Selector J Says:

@miner – Good call on that ‘Roo KDF. Need to revisit that one, if only to see whether ’09 deserves more love. I remember liking it from the couch.

  23. Robear Says:

If u haven’t, spin the entire 8/10/97 show. Reid Icculus ‘Split’ in set 1. Set 2 one of the darkest, weirdest ever.

  24. joemeg Says:

yeah, that Cities is an unforgettable moment for me. Meg too. I could play her 5 seconds of that jam and she would know it’s the Deer Creek Cities

  25. Corey Says:

And I would still see Woosta II and SPAC I/III. Although, I don’t really like it there. I was front row balcony for that Piper, many years ago. Honestly, can it get better than that? (please don’t answer that, it will not help me. 🙂 )
