TTFF: The Venues of 2012

6.10.11—Camden, NJ (Graham Lucas)

With the announcement of dates, a new excitement is in the air. Phish is, once again, within reach, even if its three plus months away. But in early anticipation of Summer 2012, today’s playlist is comprised of selections from venues that the band will play this summer. Enjoy the multi-era’d retrospective as we fade into the first weekend of March.

Cities -> Good Times Bad Times” 8.10.97 II, Noblesville, IN

The centerpiece of my favorite show ever played at Deer Creek.

Disease -> What’s the Use?” 8.14.10 II, East Troy, WI

A modern-day classic from Alpine Valley 2010, already commemorated on DVD.

Number Line” 6.12.10 II, Cuyahoga Falls, OH

A sinister jam from the second show of tour at Blossom.

Tweezer” 12.28.95 II, Worcester, MA

Phish dropped this big-time “Tweezer” at The Centrum on the opening night of New Year’s Run ’95.

Gumbo” 8.13.97 II, Burgettstown, PA

This version from Star Lake is my favorite “Gumbo” of all time.

It’s Ice”  9.20.00 II, Cincinatti, OH

An out-of-nowhere plunge into psychedelic depths at Riverbend on Phish’s final tour before hiatus.

Sand” 6.19.11 II, Portsmouth, VA

To know this “Sand” is to love it. Every time I listen to this version from nTelos, I like it more and more. Trey absolutely destroys this piece in the context of a whole-band exchange. In my opinion, its the best version of an impressive year of “Sands.”

Reba” 6.2.09 I, Wantagh, NY

Phish dropped this gorgeous “Reba” in the early-evening at Jones Beach on the second night of 2009’s first tour.

Kill Devil Falls > Free” 6.12.09, Manchester, TN

This jam highlighted Phish’s late-night slot at Bonnaroo—the first of two performances.

Walls > Bowie” 6.19.04 I, Saratoga Springs, NY

The otherworldly second set of this SPAC show has always overshadowed this demonic combo from the first.

friends don’t let friends do lossy T3
    c’mon brah

quite frankly, I don’t have the time or energy to worry about lossless. with the baby (and school and working two jobs) taking up most of my free time I end up listening mostly on my phone, in my car, or at work via either ear buds, crappy computer speakers, or an under-cabinet ipod dock thing. lossless quality is lost on my “systems”. I’m not an archivist type, so as long as it isn’t horrible it works for me. shit, compared to most of the tapes I listened to over the years, the difference between tape and mp3 might as well be the same as the difference between mp3 and flac. there are still shows where I expect to hear the squeals and other tape defects at certain parts of songs/jams that were engrained in my ears from countless listens.

not saying I won’t grab lossless (torrenting kp’s latest right now in fact) but I just don’t care enough and don’t have the money to spend to make it worthwhile to go all lossless.

go for you for being able to do it. it just isn’t something I can see myself ever really going full bore

  3. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    *good for you

  4. El Duderino Says:

i liken it to folk’s who collect comic books

  5. El Duderino Says:

what ever get’s you off dude…
    I just thought you collected

  6. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

yeah, that’s a good analogy. and to carry it further, I’m the type of guy to read the comic book over and over until it falls apart and then I’ll go get another one, preferably used so as to avoid too much cost. my dad is a collector and I think I have some of the tendencies but lack the follow through to do it full time. I like to have what I want at my disposal but with the advent of the free exchange of information I am more interested in knowing that I can obtain it quickly and easily over being the one who has the pristine copy that everyone covets. naah’mean?

listening to the clifford ball all weekend here. just finished reba from day 2. beauty. mikes->simple was great. funny slow sappy song stretch in the middle of the 2nd set just before the mikes. coil, waste, taste, train song, strange design…

and you even forgot Talk 😉 it was the mini-stage thing they did that summer, but I honestly don’t remember it being a lull. These days people would be tearing them a new one on twitter within a few minutes if they did that kind of thing again.

got engaged on thurs before radiohead . . . asked bek to marry me in the middle of centennial olympic park in atlanta. it was two years ago that we started our connection in atlanta for a trey show at the tabernacle. we met for the first time going to a phish show in charlottesville the previous fall.

radiohead was awesome . . . great music, impressive stage set up and light show. phillips arena is a really nice venue. i think NotTomMarshall said phish should play there and i wholeheartedly agree. i’d love to see a new years run there – GA floor looked inviting and not overcrowded. we were in 100s straight away from the stage in great seats. that was my first RH show and i will catch them again when i can.

saw funk you (band from augusta, ga) at the nowhere bar in athens on friday night

saw the malah and lotus last night at the georgia theater in athens – good times all around

the george theater underwent a complete overhaul after a fire in 2009. it reopened last year in sept. very impressive venue, great sound, several levels of balconies and a roof top bar.

  15. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    congrats pho and bek!

    Awesome man!

Congrats and nothing but the best to you and BEK

  18. Mike in Austin Says:

I loved the mini stage. Know a lot of “hip” kids that hated it. Same kids that thought all of Billy Breathes was “soft”

  19. angryjoggerz Says:

    woo hoo, congratulations!

  20. angryjoggerz Says:

Spent the last 2 hours listening to Sun Glitters, drinking wine and trying to make a top 30 favorite albums ever list. Why, I have no idea, but it’s sunday so fuck it.

  21. phoammhead Says:

thanks t3, duder, mia and aj!

  22. RoosterPizza Says:

    congrats phoam

HOw was that Malah Lotus show? That’s a really good opener for one of my favorite bands. Wish I could have been at that one.

  23. Dr Pronoia Says:

    Congrats phoam and bek!!

  24. RoosterPizza Says:

I see you got a Spiritualize to open and close the first set; you have to like that. Jumpoff>Zelda>Jumpoff was probably a fun time too.

  25. RoosterPizza Says:

anyone down for a tt sesh later on?
