TTFT: Miami ’09 & March Madness

12.29.09 - Miami, FL (Wendy Rogell)

As we finish our audio retrospective of 2009, today brings us to Miami. Riding the cresting momentum of fall tour’s back end, there was a sense that something special would happen down south. Heading to the proximity of Big Cypress ten years later and back to American Airlines Arena six years later, plenty of memories and anticipation hung in the air. And when the band left Miami, they had found a new sense of musical purpose, bringing their playing to a new level while inspiring the community and making the future look brighter than ever. Mike had been using his envelope filter more and more towards the end of fall, and in a New Year’s Run in which he was the undeniable leader, the effect was prominent in many of the jams. Achieving a new level of musical density, Phish was hitting on all cylinders as the calendar turned to 2010. Today’s playlist is comprised entirely of Miami highlights. Stay tuned from a trip through 2010 starting tomorrow.

  1. DryIceFactory Says:

Add me to the group of people who put Timber over Fluffhead. Also took another 14 over 3. Alumni over Antelope. If only because I’m getting tired of seeing the same old Stockalopes.

  2. SillyWilly Says:

    word, MiA

    i agree completely.

  3. GhostDog Says:

    @ Dry Ice…

Those were my two upsets as well thus far. Not a big Antelope guy, never really have been.

Alumni funk jam from the Manch Light is the effing BIZ.

  4. GhostDog Says:

Wish somebody would work a matrix of these Miami shows…

Again, these 09 SBDs come up short.

  5. Al Says:

    @marcoesq
thanks. Too bad that I somehow cannot listen to that Austin 97 anymore because of that reason becuase it was a stellar show. That Bowie is also worth mentioning.

But as a next archival release I keep asking Kevin Shapiro for Boise 9/14/99 (finally another ’99 show! /greatest ACDC-Bag ever), Dallas 7/25/97 (best Chalkdust) or NYE 97 (Epic).

  6. dorn76 Says:

Def NYE ’97. Those SBD’s from that MSG run are awful.

  7. DryIceFactory Says:

Add me to people who want Boise 99 on soundboard. With the Chula Vista Boogie On added as filler.

  8. Guyute711 Says:

Not a big Antelope guy eh? I guess you weren’t around in the mid nineties.

  9. sumodie Says:

my new fav flavah of phish crack: Coral Sky ’96

(just watched dvd for the first time last nite)

    😯

i’m amused that in terms of official phish dvd releases, ’96 is far & away my fav year

  10. Al Says:

    ^Phoenix 7/29/97 had a nice Antelope..

  11. MiA Says:

For archival, I think Cypress still needs to be on the forefront.

I’d love for a Gorge Box Set, sort of a “best of” or a Deer Creek Box set, basically the same thing. Kinda like the “Left Nuts” sort of stuff. Or the “Road to Vegas” kind of release.

  12. DryIceFactory Says:

    I heard 12/29/97 had a decent Antelope.

  13. DryIceFactory Says:

I’m just sick of the recent ones. Although this Miami BoogieOnalope is pretty awesome.

  14. verno329 Says:

@sumo Coral Sky is one of those videos that I have to be careful about putting in, cause once I do I can’t get it out of the player for like a week. I just love the extra percussion and top notch Phish.

And just wait until they drop some HQ ’97 Phish vids, I mean that’s gotta be coming eventually, right???

  15. lumpyhead Says:

I can dig alumni over antelope.

  16. lumpyhead Says:

‘And just wait until they drop some HQ ’97 Phish vids, I mean that’s gotta be coming eventually, right???’

    wouldn’t you think??

  17. Al Says:

    @smodie
1996 had some really good shows. 08/13/96, 12/28/96, 12/29/96, 11/6/96 and 11/09/96. And it’s the year I saw Phish for the first time live (Hannover Germany as support act for Santana. They actually should release that support gig as an official CD because Chalkdust, Ya Mar, Julius, YEM and Golgi were all the best versions of the year;-)

  18. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    When was Walnut Creek dvd?

  19. Al Says:

    7/22/97 released 2008 I think…

  20. Al Says:

LIVEPHISH released 12/29/97 and 12/30/97 as videos. But only single cam from SBD position. Nevertheless pretty cool to watch…

  21. Kaveh Says:

Yawning Drone still has the stream up of these shows:

    http://yawningdrone.com/?m=200912

I need more of the shows than the few songs that are here today.

  22. GhostDog Says:

    @711…

Actually, I saw a ton of shows throughout the nineties…
Just not big on Antelope is all.

Back to Timber… while the Waves>Undermind from Chi was some of the best 3.0, I have to wonder how sick that Timber would have been with the thermin treatment.

  23. MiA Says:

Love how in 12/30 they drop into Sneaking Sally to open, and this one guy is leaping heads and bounds up and down pumping his fist cheering, and everyone else is looking at each other, like “What song is this?”

After about 45 seconds, the collective … ah…

Still guess 80% of the crowd didn’t know the song.

  24. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

counting up all of the stellar ‘lopes over the years is tough. such a storied song in the pantheon.

speaking of, it has been far too long since
shaun white trey got linked here

  25. voopa Says:

I think the SBD of 12/29/97 sounds better than Hampton/Winston-Salem…
